'The world is full of big bad wolves': investigating the experimental therapeutic spaces of R.D. Laing and Aaron Esterson
In conjunction with the recent critical assessments of the life and work of R.D. Laing, this paper seeks to demonstrate what is revealed when Laing’s work on families and created spaces of mental health care are examined through a geographical lens. The paper begins with an exploration of Laing’s time at the Tavistock Clinic in London during the 1960s, and of the co-authored text with Aaron Esterson entitled, Sanity, Madness and the Family (1964). The study then seeks to demonstrate the importance Laing and his colleague placed on the time-space situatedness of patients and their worlds. Finally, an account is provided of Laing’s and Esterson’s spatial thinking in relation to their creation of both real and imagined spaces of therapeutic care
Methane storms as a driver of Titan's dune orientation
Titan's equatorial regions are covered by eastward propagating linear dunes.
This direction is opposite to mean surface winds simulated by Global Climate
Models (GCMs), which are oriented westward at these latitudes, similar to trade
winds on Earth. Different hypotheses have been proposed to address this
apparent contradiction, involving Saturn's gravitational tides, large scale
topography or wind statistics, but none of them can explain a global eastward
dune propagation in the equatorial band. Here we analyse the impact of
equinoctial tropical methane storms developing in the superrotating atmosphere
(i.e. the eastward winds at high altitude) on Titan's dune orientation. Using
mesoscale simulations of convective methane clouds with a GCM wind profile
featuring superrotation, we show that Titan's storms should produce fast
eastward gust fronts above the surface. Such gusts dominate the aeolian
transport, allowing dunes to extend eastward. This analysis therefore suggests
a coupling between superrotation, tropical methane storms and dune formation on
Titan. Furthermore, together with GCM predictions and analogies to some
terrestrial dune fields, this work provides a general framework explaining
several major features of Titan's dunes: linear shape, eastward propagation and
poleward divergence, and implies an equatorial origin of Titan's dune sand.Comment: Published online on Nature Geoscience on 13 April 201
The magnetic nature of disk accretion onto black holes
Although disk accretion onto compact objects - white dwarfs, neutron stars,
and black holes - is central to much of high energy astrophysics, the
mechanisms which enable this process have remained observationally elusive.
Accretion disks must transfer angular momentum for matter to travel radially
inward onto the compact object. Internal viscosity from magnetic processes and
disk winds can in principle both transfer angular momentum, but hitherto we
lacked evidence that either occurs. Here we report that an X-ray-absorbing wind
discovered in an observation of the stellar-mass black hole binary GRO J1655-40
must be powered by a magnetic process that can also drive accretion through the
disk. Detailed spectral analysis and modeling of the wind shows that it can
only be powered by pressure generated by magnetic viscosity internal to the
disk or magnetocentrifugal forces. This result demonstrates that disk accretion

Rapid flush technique for donor hepatectomy: Safety and efficacy of an improved method of liver recovery for transplantation
This report describes a 2-year retrospective review of 437 donor hepatectomies comparing our experience with both the conventional and rapid flush techniques. In this retrospective review we have compared this new rapid technique to that of the conventional. The population of donors comprising the two groups were not significantly different, although there was a trend to use slightly more compromised donors when the rapid technique was used. Despite this trend, overall graft function, as assessed by peak flush group. Finally, the rate of primary nonfunction of hepatic grafts was reduced by the use of this new technique. In summary, the rapid flush technique yields high quality organs, is well accepted by the transplant community, and has become the procedure of choice for organ procurement
Validation of the SCID-hu Thy/Liv mouse model with four classes of licensed antiretrovirals.
BackgroundThe SCID-hu Thy/Liv mouse model of HIV-1 infection is a useful platform for the preclinical evaluation of antiviral efficacy in vivo. We performed this study to validate the model with representatives of all four classes of licensed antiretrovirals.Methodology/principal findingsEndpoint analyses for quantification of Thy/Liv implant viral load included ELISA for cell-associated p24, branched DNA assay for HIV-1 RNA, and detection of infected thymocytes by intracellular staining for Gag-p24. Antiviral protection from HIV-1-mediated thymocyte depletion was assessed by multicolor flow cytometric analysis of thymocyte subpopulations based on surface expression of CD3, CD4, and CD8. These mice can be productively infected with molecular clones of HIV-1 (e.g., the X4 clone NL4-3) as well as with primary R5 and R5X4 isolates. To determine whether results in this model are concordant with those found in humans, we performed direct comparisons of two drugs in the same class, each of which has known potency and dosing levels in humans. Here we show that second-generation antiretrovirals were, as expected, more potent than their first-generation predecessors: emtricitabine was more potent than lamivudine, efavirenz was more potent than nevirapine, and atazanavir was more potent than indinavir. After interspecies pharmacodynamic scaling, the dose ranges found to inhibit viral replication in the SCID-hu Thy/Liv mouse were similar to those used in humans. Moreover, HIV-1 replication in these mice was genetically stable; treatment of the mice with lamivudine did not result in the M184V substitution in reverse transcriptase, and the multidrug-resistant NY index case HIV-1 retained its drug-resistance substitutions.ConclusionGiven the fidelity of such comparisons, we conclude that this highly reproducible mouse model is likely to predict clinical antiviral efficacy in humans
