Strong Near-Infrared Emission Interior to the Dust-Sublimation Radius of Young Stellar Objects MWC275 and AB Aur
Using the longest optical-interferometeric baselines currently available, we
have detected strong near-infrared (NIR) emission from inside the
dust-destruction radius of Herbig Ae stars MWC275 and AB Aur. Our
sub-milli-arcsecond resolution observations unambiguously place the emission
between the dust-destruction radius and the magnetospheric co-rotation radius.
We argue that this new component corresponds to hot gas inside the
dust-sublimation radius, confirming recent claims based on spectrally-resolved

Background and approach to a definition of smart buildings
There is no possibility of finding a single reference about domotics in the first half of the 20th century. The best known authors and those who have documented this discipline, set its origin in the 1970’s, when the x-10 technology began to be used, but it was not until 1988 when Larousse Encyclopedia decided to include the definition of "Smart Building". Furthermore, even nowadays, there is not a single definition widely accepted, and for that reason, many other expressions, namely "Intelligent Buildings" "Domotics" "Digital Home" or "Home Automation" have appeared to describe the automated buildings and homes. The lack of a clear definition for "Smart Buildings" causes difficulty not only in the development of a common international framework to develop research in this field, but it also causes insecurity in the potential user of these buildings. Thus, the main purpose of this paper is to propose a definition of the expression “Smart Buildings” that satisfactorily describes the meaning of this discipline. To achieve this aim, a thorough review of the origin of the term itself and the historical background before the emergence of the phenomenon of domotics was conducted, followed by a critical discussion of existing definitions of the term "Smart Buildings" and other similar terms. The extent of each definition has been analyzed, inaccuracies have been discarded and commonalities have been compared. Throughout the discussion, definitions that bring the term "Smart Buildings" near to disciplines such as computer science, robotics and also telecommunications have been found
Strong scaling of general-purpose molecular dynamics simulations on GPUs
We describe a highly optimized implementation of MPI domain decomposition in
a GPU-enabled, general-purpose molecular dynamics code, HOOMD-blue (Anderson
and Glotzer, arXiv:1308.5587). Our approach is inspired by a traditional
CPU-based code, LAMMPS (Plimpton, J. Comp. Phys. 117, 1995), but is implemented
within a code that was designed for execution on GPUs from the start (Anderson
et al., J. Comp. Phys. 227, 2008). The software supports short-ranged pair
force and bond force fields and achieves optimal GPU performance using an
autotuning algorithm. We are able to demonstrate equivalent or superior scaling
on up to 3,375 GPUs in Lennard-Jones and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD)
simulations of up to 108 million particles. GPUDirect RDMA capabilities in
recent GPU generations provide better performance in full double precision
calculations. For a representative polymer physics application, HOOMD-blue 1.0
provides an effective GPU vs. CPU node speed-up of 12.5x.Comment: 30 pages, 14 figure

Mid-infrared size survey of Young Stellar Objects: Description of Keck segment-tilting experiment and basic results
The mid-infrared properties of pre-planetary disks are sensitive to the
temperature and flaring profiles of disks for the regions where planet
formation is expected to occur. In order to constrain theories of planet
formation, we have carried out a mid-infrared (wavelength 10.7 microns) size
survey of young stellar objects using the segmented Keck telescope in a novel
configuration. We introduced a customized pattern of tilts to individual mirror
segments to allow efficient sparse-aperture interferometry, allowing full
aperture synthesis imaging with higher calibration precision than traditional
imaging. In contrast to previous surveys on smaller telescopes and with poorer
calibration precision, we find most objects in our sample are partially
resolved. Here we present the main observational results of our survey of 5
embedded massive protostars, 25 Herbig Ae/Be stars, 3 T Tauri stars, 1 FU Ori
system, and 5 emission-line objects of uncertain classification. The observed
mid-infrared sizes do not obey the size-luminosity relation found at
near-infrared wavelengths and a companion paper will provide further modelling
analysis of this sample. In addition, we report imaging results for a few of
the most resolved objects, including complex emission around embedded massive
protostars, the photoevaporating circumbinary disk around MWC 361A, and the
subarcsecond binaries T Tau, FU Ori and MWC 1080.Comment: Accepted by Astrophysical Journal. 38 pages. 9 figure
