    Amplitude equations and pattern selection in Faraday waves

    We present a systematic nonlinear theory of pattern selection for parametric surface waves (Faraday waves), not restricted to fluids of low viscosity. A standing wave amplitude equation is derived from the Navier-Stokes equations that is of gradient form. The associated Lyapunov function is calculated for different regular patterns to determine the selected pattern near threshold. For fluids of large viscosity, the selected wave pattern consists of parallel stripes. At lower viscosity, patterns of square symmetry are obtained in the capillary regime (large frequencies). At lower frequencies (the mixed gravity-capillary regime), a sequence of six-fold (hexagonal), eight-fold, ... patterns are predicted. The regions of stability of the various patterns are in quantitative agreement with recent experiments conducted in large aspect ratio systems.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, Revte

    The herbicide 2,4-D LV4 ester provides excellent low-cost smooth sumac control. Prescribed burning before herbicide application does not substantially improve sumac control, but may ease herbicide application and provide other benefits. Smooth sumac (Rhus glabra L.) is a native deciduous shrub that forms dense thickets from widely spreading roots. It is found in the Sandhills, mixed-grass, and tallgrass areas throughout Nebraska. Introduced cool-season grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), invade the thickets, and production of desirable forage species is reduced below the dense canopies. Trees and other shrubs readily establish in aging sumac thickets, accelerating the conversion of grassland to woodland. Small amounts of smooth sumac may be desirable because it provides wildlife habitat and food and has attractive fall foliage

    Plasma deposition of constrained layer damping coatings

    Plasma techniques are used to generate constrained layer damping (CLD) coatings on metallic substrates. The process involves the deposition of relatively thick, hard ceramic layers on to soft polymeric damping materials while maintaining the integrity of both layers. Reactive plasma sputter-deposition from an aluminium alloy target is used to deposit alumina layers, with Young's modulus in the range 77-220GPa and thickness up to 335 μ, on top of a silicone film. This methodology is also used to deposit a 40 μ alumina layer on a conventional viscoelastic damping film to produce an integral damping coating. Plasma CLD systems are shown to give at least 50 per cent more damping than equivalent metal-foil-based treatments. Numerical methods for rapid prediction of the performance of such coatings are discussed and validated by comparison with experimental results

    Statistical analysis of the owl:sameAs network for aligning concepts in the linking open data cloud

    The massively distributed publication of linked data has brought to the attention of scientific community the limitations of classic methods for achieving data integration and the opportunities of pushing the boundaries of the field by experimenting this collective enterprise that is the linking open data cloud. While reusing existing ontologies is the choice of preference, the exploitation of ontology alignments still is a required step for easing the burden of integrating heterogeneous data sets. Alignments, even between the most used vocabularies, is still poorly supported in systems nowadays whereas links between instances are the most widely used means for bridging the gap between different data sets. We provide in this paper an account of our statistical and qualitative analysis of the network of instance level equivalences in the Linking Open Data Cloud (i.e. the sameAs network) in order to automatically compute alignments at the conceptual level. Moreover, we explore the effect of ontological information when adopting classical Jaccard methods to the ontology alignment task. Automating such task will allow in fact to achieve a clearer conceptual description of the data at the cloud level, while improving the level of integration between datasets. <br/

    Hygroscopic properties of aminium sulfate aerosols

    Alkylaminium sulfates originate from the neutralisation reaction between short-chained amines and sulfuric acid and have been detected in atmospheric aerosol particles. Their physicochemical behaviour is less well characterised than their inorganic equivalent, ammonium sulfate, even though they play a role in atmospheric processes such as the nucleation and growth of new particles and cloud droplet formation. In this work, a comparative evaporation kinetics experimental technique using a cylindrical electrodynamic balance is applied to determine the hygroscopic properties of six short-chained alkylaminium sulfates, specifically mono-, di-, and tri-methylaminium sulfate and mono-, di-, and tri-ethyl aminium sulfate. This approach allows for the retrieval of a water-activity-dependent growth curve in less than 10 s, avoiding the uncertainties that can arise from the volatilisation of semi-volatile components. Measurements are made on particles > 5 µm in radius, avoiding the need to correct equilibrium measurements for droplet-surface curvature with assumed values of the droplet-surface tension. Variations in equilibrium solution droplet composition with varying water activity are reported over the range 0.5 to > 0.98, along with accurate parameterisations of solution density and refractive index. The uncertainties in water activities associated with the hygroscopicity measurements are typically  0.9 and  ∼  ±1 % below 0.9, with maximum uncertainties in diameter growth factors of ±0.7 %. Comparison with previously reported measurements show deviation across the entire water activity range

    Effects of Art Intervention on Pediatric Anxiety and Pain in the Medical Setting

    Introduction: Hospitalization and illness can be a painful and stressful time for a child. There may be anxiety over procedures and inpatient stays disrupt normal routines. Previous research found that for pre-school aged children, having parents around, having the help of the hospital staff, and playing an active role in alleviating their fears were the most helpful in reducing anxiety. Another study found that visual creative expressions can be meaningful experiences for young adult cancer survivors. Additionally, there is abundant literature on formal art therapy and its favorable effects on children in the hospital, however, there are fewer studies investigating less standardized “art intervention” in the same population.     On a family of solutions of the KP equation which also satisfy the Toda lattice hierarchy

    We describe the interaction pattern in the xx-yy plane for a family of soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, (4ut+uxxx+6uux)x+3uyy=0(-4u_{t}+u_{xxx}+6uu_x)_{x}+3u_{yy}=0. Those solutions also satisfy the finite Toda lattice hierarchy. We determine completely their asymptotic patterns for y±y\to \pm\infty, and we show that all the solutions (except the one-soliton solution) are of {\it resonant} type, consisting of arbitrary numbers of line solitons in both aymptotics; that is, arbitrary NN_- incoming solitons for yy\to -\infty interact to form arbitrary N+N_+ outgoing solitons for yy\to\infty. We also discuss the interaction process of those solitons, and show that the resonant interaction creates a {\it web-like} structure having (N1)(N+1)(N_--1)(N_+-1) holes.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, submitted to JPA; Math.     An analytical stability theory for Faraday waves and the observation of the harmonic surface response

    We present an analytical stability theory for the onset of the Faraday instability, applying over a wide frequency range between shallow water gravity and deep water capillary waves. For sufficiently thin fluid layers the surface is predicted to occur in harmonic rather than subharmonic resonance with the forcing. An experimental confirmation of this result is given.
