    Managing Term-Time Employment and Study in Ireland. ESRI WP185. March 2007

    An increasing amount of research now relates to full-time higher education students who work part-time during their study. However, little is known about this issue in the Irish context, despite the fact that the latter provides an interesting case-study due to its unprecedented economic growth in recent years and subsequent changes in the labour market. This paper attempts to address this gap in research and reports on a postal survey carried out among 3,900 higher education students. It aims to establish the profile of full-time higher education students engaged in part-time work during term-time. It also explores the motivation for engaging in paid work and possible implications of work-load on levels of life satisfaction. It is argued in this paper that inadequate policy attention to the changing profile of higher education students, their work-load and needs risks reinforcing inequalities among students

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of background and school factors on second-level students’ attitudes toward Irish as a school subject drawing on the Growing Up in Ireland study. The study focuses on the perceptions of the core subjects, English, Mathematics and Irish, and presents a profile of students who find the Irish language interesting or difficult. The study enables us to investigate the attitudes of teenagers towards the language in a systematic way, including personal, school and other characteristics that may have an impact on attitudes towards the Irish language

    Profiling half-back play in rugby union and the impact of substitutions

    An exploratory method of quantifying the impact of individual players in rugby union was developed and applied to both half-back positions in 2015 Rugby World Cup matches with a view to firstly test the validity of these systems by profiling players, and secondly, if successful, to assess the impact of substitutions. A match impact scoring system was devised using questionnaire responses of an expert group of professional rugby analysts and experienced international coaches. The scoring system weighted each game action in a positive or negative manner according to the impact on team performance. It was found that the proposed method produced valid and reliable data concerning player performance. It was applied to half-backs substituted with more than 20 mins playing time left, the two 20 min period, before and after substitution, were compared. A “non-substituted” control group were also analysed, in both the first and final 20 minutes of competition. It was found that for the scrum-half position, the starting players produced a higher median ‘efficacy’ score than replacement players 27.46, (std. dev. +10.06) and 20.42, (+12.45). The best performing scrum-half group were the 60-80 minute non-replaced players 29 (+9.0). For the out-half position, it was found that the highest median ‘efficacy’ was achieved by the replacement player group 18.80, (+ 11.00), with the non-replaced 60-80 minute group performing worst 14.40, (+ 7.09). Future research should develop the methods applied in this study to define player profiles for each position on the rugby field. It is suggested that these profiles should use score difference between the teams to take into account the strength of the teams involved. The concept of a weighted individual player efficacy system has been demonstrated in the sport of rugby union, but could be applied in any team sport where greater individual player performance data is required

    The Tellus geochemical surveys, results and applications

    Ambitions to complete geochemical mapping across the island of Ireland were developed in the 1980s and the first phases began in western Northern Ireland in the early 1990s. Subsequent phases in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland were begun from 2004. The Tellus and Tellus Border geochemical sampling programmes of 2004–12 resulted in the most comprehensive maps of their kind for the northern region of Ireland. These programmes covered 30% of the island of Ireland, albeit at different sampling densities, with detailed soil and stream sampling. Soils were sampled at 10,335 sites and streams at a further 9501 sites. 1269 urban sites were sampled in Belfast and Derry–Londonderry. The survey methodologies followed the established sampling protocols of the GB Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment (G‑BASE). Applying these systematic approaches of sampling and quality control was the foundation for developing coherent and comparable cross-border data sets. The samples were analysed by internationally accredited laboratories. In all media, typically around 55 inorganic chemical elements and ions, and physico-chemical properties were analysed and measured. The maps of these elements reveal wide variations across the area, reflecting the influence of the underlying geology, mineralisation, and anthropogenic and environmental factors. The data, which are open and freely available, have prompted an increase in mineral exploration and research into a range of environmental questions

    Transcriptional changes in trichothiodystrophy cells

    Mutations in three of the genes encoding the XPB, XPD and TTDA components of transcription factor TFIIH can result in the clinical phenotype of trichothiodystrophy (TTD). Different mutations in XPB and XPD can instead cause xeroderma pigmentosum (XP). The completely different features of these disorders have been attributed to TTD being a transcription syndrome. In order to detect transcriptional differences between TTD and XP cells from the XP-D complementation group, we have compared gene expression profiles in cultured fibroblasts from normal, XP and TTD donors. Although we detected transcriptional differences between individual cell strains, using an algorithm of moderate stringency, we did not identify any genes whose expression was reproducibly different in proliferating fibroblasts from each type of donor. Following UV-irradiation, many genes were up- and down-regulated in all three cell types. The microarray analysis indicated some apparent differences between the different donor types, but on more detailed inspection, these turned out to be false positives. We conclude that there are minimal differences in gene expression in proliferating fibroblasts from TTD, XP-D and normal donors

    Using metabolic tracer techniques to assess the impact of tillage and straw management on microbial carbon use efficiency in soil

    a b s t r a c t Tillage practices and straw management can affect soil microbial activities with consequences for soil organic carbon (C) dynamics. Microorganisms metabolize soil organic C and in doing so gain energy and building blocks for biosynthesis, and release CO 2 to the atmosphere. Insight into the response of microbial metabolic processes and C use efficiency (CUE; microbial C produced per substrate C utilized) to management practices may therefore help to predict long term changes in soil C stocks. In this study, we assessed the effects of reduced (RT) and conventional tillage (CT) on the microbial central C metabolic network, using soil samples from a 12-year-old field experiment in an Irish winter wheat cropping system. Straw was removed from half of the RT and CT plots after harvest or incorporated into the soil in the other half, resulting in four treatment combinations. We added 1-13 C and 2,3-13 C pyruvate and 1-13 C and U-13 C glucose as metabolic tracer isotopomers to composite soil samples taken at two depths (0e15 cm and 15e30 cm) from each of the treatments and used the rate of position-specific respired 13 CO 2 to parameterize a metabolic model. Model outcomes were then used to calculate CUE of the microbial community. Whereas the composite samples differed in CUE, the changes were small, with values ranging between 0.757 and 0.783 across treatments and soil depth. Increases in CUE were associated with a reduced tricarboxylic acid cycle and reductive pentose phosphate pathway activity and increased consumption of metabolic intermediates for biosynthesis. Our results suggest that RT and straw incorporation do not substantially affect CUE

    Risk factors for hospital admission with RSV bronchiolitis in England: a population-based birth cohort study.

    OBJECTIVE: To examine the timing and duration of RSV bronchiolitis hospital admission among term and preterm infants in England and to identify risk factors for bronchiolitis admission. DESIGN: A population-based birth cohort with follow-up to age 1 year, using the Hospital Episode Statistics database. SETTING: 71 hospitals across England. PARTICIPANTS: We identified 296618 individual birth records from 2007/08 and linked to subsequent hospital admission records during the first year of life. RESULTS: In our cohort there were 7189 hospital admissions with a diagnosis of bronchiolitis, 24.2 admissions per 1000 infants under 1 year (95%CI 23.7-24.8), of which 15% (1050/7189) were born preterm (47.3 bronchiolitis admissions per 1000 preterm infants (95% CI 44.4-50.2)). The peak age group for bronchiolitis admissions was infants aged 1 month and the median was age 120 days (IQR = 61-209 days). The median length of stay was 1 day (IQR = 0-3). The relative risk (RR) of a bronchiolitis admission was higher among infants with known risk factors for severe RSV infection, including those born preterm (RR = 1.9, 95% CI 1.8-2.0) compared with infants born at term. Other conditions also significantly increased risk of bronchiolitis admission, including Down's syndrome (RR = 2.5, 95% CI 1.7-3.7) and cerebral palsy (RR = 2.4, 95% CI 1.5-4.0). CONCLUSIONS: Most (85%) of the infants who are admitted to hospital with bronchiolitis in England are born at term, with no known predisposing risk factors for severe RSV infection, although risk of admission is higher in known risk groups. The early age of bronchiolitis admissions has important implications for the potential impact and timing of future active and passive immunisations. More research is needed to explain why babies born with Down's syndrome and cerebral palsy are also at higher risk of hospital admission with RSV bronchiolitis

    Absorption Coefficient (ABSCO) Tables for the Orbiting Carbon Observatories: Version 5.1

    The accuracy of atmospheric trace gas retrievals depends directly on the accuracy of the molecular absorption model used within the retrieval algorithm. For remote sensing of well-mixed gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), where the atmospheric variability is small compared to the background, the quality of the molecular absorption model is key. Recent updates to oxygen (O₂) absorption coefficients (ABSCO) for the 0.76 μm A-band and the water vapor (H₂O) continuum model within the 1.6 μm and 2.06 μm CO₂ bands used within the Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO-2 and OCO-3) algorithm are described here. Updates in the O₂ A-band involve the inclusion of new laboratory measurements within multispectrum fits to improve relative consistency between O₂ line shapes and collision-induced absorption (CIA). The H₂O continuum model has been updated to MTCKD v3.2, which has benefited from information from a range of laboratory studies relative to the model utilized in the previous ABSCO version. Impacts of these spectroscopy updates have been evaluated against ground-based atmospheric spectra from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) and within the framework of the OCO-2 algorithm, using OCO-2 soundings covering a range of atmospheric and surface conditions. The updated absorption coefficients (ABSCO version 5.1) are found to offer improved fitting residuals and reduced biases in retrieved surface pressure relative to the previous version (ABSCO v5.0) used within B8 and B9 of the OCO-2 retrieval algorithm and have been adopted for the OCO B10 Level 2 algorithm

    Ruxolitinib in patients with polycythemia vera resistant and/or intolerant to hydroxyurea:European observational study

    Background: Hydroxyurea (HU) is a commonly used first-line treatment in patients with polycythemia vera (PV). However, approximately 15%–24% of PV patients report intolerance and resistance to HU. Methods: This phase IV, European, real-world, observational study assessed the efficacy and safety of ruxolitinib in PV patients who were resistant and/or intolerant to HU, with a 24-month follow-up. The primary objective was to describe the profile and disease burden of PV patients. Results: In the 350 enrolled patients, 70% were &gt;60 years old. Most patients (59.4%) had received ≥1 phlebotomy in the 12 months prior to the first dose of ruxolitinib. Overall, 68.2% of patients achieved hematocrit control with 92.3% patients having hematocrit &lt;45% and 35.4% achieved hematologic remission at month 24. 85.1% of patients had no phlebotomies during the study. Treatment-related adverse events were reported in 54.3% of patients and the most common event was anemia (22.6%). Of the 10 reported deaths, two were suspected to be study drug-related. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that ruxolitinib treatment in PV maintains durable hematocrit control with a decrease in the number of phlebotomies in the majority of patients and was generally well tolerated.</p
