    Sustav upravljanja kakvoćom - novi pristup prema ISO 9000/2000

    The paper presents information on new standards for quality management systems, ISO 9000/2000. Differences between the set of ISO 9000/1994 standards, that are not valid now, and a new one are presented. Special interest is focused on new features of the system, e.g. process approach, flexibilty of the standards regarding their use in all kinds of work organizations, documentation of the system, principles of continual improvement, self-assesment of the organization.Članak priopćava o novim normama sustava za upravljanje kakvoćom, ISO 9000/2000. Razlike između niza normi ISO 9000/1994 koje sada nisu važeće te su prikazane nove norme. Posebno zanimanje posvećeno je novim svojstvima tog sustava, npr. postupku prilaza, fleksibilnosti normi u smislu njihove uporabe u svim vidovima radnih organizacija, dokumentacije sustava, načela kontinuiranog napretka, samoocjenjivanja radnih organizacija

    The paper deals with aspects and effects of oxygen converter flue dust recycling into the oxygen converter charge. Flue dust was recycled when solidificated into form of briquettes. No significant effects of the recycling on process of hot metal refining and on quality of produced steel were recorded. Recycling of flue dust briquettes influenced composition and structure of steel making slag, namely its zinc contents and composition of oxygen converter flue dust. Recommendation on recycling of up to 4 000 kg of flue dust briquettes into the 160 t charge of oxygen converter was suggested.Članak se bavi aspektima recikliranja prašine kisikovog konvertora u talinu konvertora i posljedicama tog recikliranja nakon skrućivanja u brikete. Nisu zapažene nikakve značajnije posljedice recikliranja na proces vrućeg rafiniranja metala kao ni na kakvoću proizvedenog čelika. Recikliranje prašine u brikete utiče na sastav i strukturu troske, tj. na sadržaj cinka u njoj i na sastav visokopećne prašine konvertora. Preporuča se recikliranje do 4 000 kg visokopećne briketirane prašine u konvertoroske taline od 160 t

    Population genetics of Glossina morsitans submorsitans (Diptera: Glossinidae)

    Breeding structure of Glossina morsitans submorsitans Newstead was evaluated by using genetic markers in mitochondrial DNA where diversity was scored at two loci in five natural populations from The Gambia and two populations in Ethiopia (form ugandensis Vanderplank), countries separated by c. 5450 km. Twenty six haplotype combinations were found, of which 17 were shared among two or more populations. Nine haplotypes were found in The Gambia and 23 haplotypes in Ethiopia. There were 12 unique haplotypes. Only six haplotypes were shared between the two countries. Populations in The Gambia (he = 0.26 ± 0.04) showed less than a third of the diversity of populations in Ethiopia (he= 0.84 ± 0.03). This suggests recovery from an earlier reduction in population. In a nested analysis of molecular variance of haplotype frequencies, 65%of the variance was due to differences within populations, 34% to differences between populations grouped by country, and only 1% was due to differences among populations within countries. In terms of gene flow, the fixation index FST= 0.35, which leads to an estimate by Wright’s island model of less than one reproducing migrant per generation exchanged between the eastern and western submorsitanspopulations. Nei’s genetic similarity measure showed a deep division between Gambian and Ethiopian populations

    Roadless and Low-Traffic Areas as Conservation Targets in Europe

    With increasing road encroachment, habitat fragmentation by transport infrastructures has been a serious threat for European biodiversity. Areas with no roads or little traffic (“roadless and low-traffic areas”) represent relatively undisturbed natural habitats and functioning ecosystems. They provide many benefits for biodiversity and human societies (e.g., landscape connectivity, barrier against pests and invasions, ecosystem services). Roadless and low-traffic areas, with a lower level of anthropogenic disturbances, are of special relevance in Europe because of their rarity and, in the context of climate change, because of their contribution to higher resilience and buffering capacity within landscape ecosystems. An analysis of European legal instruments illustrates that, although most laws aimed at protecting targets which are inherent to fragmentation, like connectivity, ecosystem processes or integrity, roadless areas are widely neglected as a legal target. A case study in Germany underlines this finding. Although the Natura 2000 network covers a significant proportion of the country (16%), Natura 2000 sites are highly fragmented and most low-traffic areas (75%) lie unprotected outside this network. This proportion is even higher for the old Federal States (western Germany), where only 20% of the low-traffic areas are protected. We propose that the few remaining roadless and low-traffic areas in Europe should be an important focus of conservation efforts; they should be urgently inventoried, included more explicitly in the law and accounted for in transport and urban planning. Considering them as complementary conservation targets would represent a concrete step towards the strengthening and adaptation of the Natura 2000 network to climate change

    The role of cow urine in the oviposition site preference of culicine and Anopheles mosquitoes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chemical and behavioural ecology of mosquitoes plays an important role in the development of chemical cue based vector control. To date, studies available have focused on evaluating mosquito attractants and repellents of synthetic and human origins. This study, however, was aimed at seasonal evaluation of the efficiency of cow urine in producing oviposition cues to <it>Anopheles gambiae </it>s.l. and <it>Culex quinquefasciatus </it>in both laboratory and field conditions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Oviposition response evaluation in laboratory conditions was carried out in mosquito rearing cages. The oviposition substrates were located in parallel or in diagonal positions inside the cage. Urine evaluation against gravid females of <it>An. arabiensis </it>and <it>Cx. quinquefasciatus </it>was carried out at Day 1, Day 3 and Day 7. Five millilitres (mls) of cow urine was added to oviposition substrate while de-chlorinated water was used as a control. In field experiments, 500 mls of cow urine was added in artificial habitats with 2500 mls of de-chlorinated water and 2 kgs of soil. The experiment was monitored for thirty consecutive days, eggs were collected daily from the habitats at 7.00 hrs. Data analysis was performed using parametric and non-parametric tests for treatments and controls while attraction of the oviposition substrate in each species was presented using Oviposition Activity Index (OAI).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The OAI was positive with ageing of cattle urine in culicine species in both laboratory and field experiments. The OAI for anopheline species was positive with fresh urine. The OAI during the rainy season was positive for all species tested while in the dry season the OAI for culicine spp and <it>Anopheles gambiae </it>s.l., changed with time from positive to negative values.</p> <p>Based on linear model analysis, seasons and treatments had a significant effect on the number of eggs laid in habitats, even though the number of days had no effect.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Oviposition substrates treated with cow urine in both laboratory and field conditions have shown that cow urine left to age from 1-7 days has an influence on oviposition behavioural response in mosquitoes. The analysis of microbial colonies for decaying urine should be investigated along with its associated by-products.</p

    Development of Real Time PCR to Study Experimental Mixed Infections of T. congolense Savannah and T. b. brucei in Glossina morsitans morsitans

    Tsetse flies are able to acquire mixed infections naturally or experimentally either simultaneously or sequentially. Traditionally, natural infection rates in tsetse flies are estimated by microscopic examination of different parts of the fly after dissection, together with the isolation of the parasite in vivo. However, until the advent of molecular techniques it was difficult to speciate trypanosomes infections and to quantify trypanosome numbers within tsetse flies. Although more expensive, qPCR allows the quantification of DNA and is less time consuming due to real time visualization and validation of the results. The current study evaluated the application of qPCR to quantify the infection load of tsetse flies with T. b. brucei and T. congolense savannah and to study the possibility of competition between the two species. The results revealed that the two qPCR reactions are of acceptable efficiency (99.1% and 95.6%, respectively), sensitivity and specificity and can be used for quantification of infection load with trypanosomes in experimentally infected Glossina morsitans morsitans. The mixed infection of laboratory Glossina species and quantification of the infection suggests the possibility that a form of competition exists between the isolates of T. b. brucei and T. congolense savannah that we used when they co-exist in the fly midgut

    Standardization of molecular monitoring of CML: results and recommendations from the European treatment and outcome study

    Standardized monitoring of BCR::ABL1 mRNA levels is essential for the management of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients. From 2016 to 2021 the European Treatment and Outcome Study for CML (EUTOS) explored the use of secondary, lyophilized cell-based BCR::ABL1 reference panels traceable to the World Health Organization primary reference material to standardize and validate local laboratory tests. Panels were used to assign and validate conversion factors (CFs) to the International Scale and assess the ability of laboratories to assess deep molecular response (DMR). The study also explored aspects of internal quality control. The percentage of EUTOS reference laboratories (n = 50) with CFs validated as optimal or satisfactory increased from 67.5% to 97.6% and 36.4% to 91.7% for ABL1 and GUSB, respectively, during the study period and 98% of laboratories were able to detect MR4.5 in most samples. Laboratories with unvalidated CFs had a higher coefficient of variation for BCR::ABL1(IS) and some laboratories had a limit of blank greater than zero which could affect the accurate reporting of DMR. Our study indicates that secondary reference panels can be used effectively to obtain and validate CFs in a manner equivalent to sample exchange and can also be used to monitor additional aspects of quality assurance.</p
