The sexual identity of adult intestinal stem cells controls organ size and plasticity

Sex differences in physiology and disease susceptibility are commonly attributed to developmental and/or hormonal factors, but there is increasing realization that cell-intrinsic mechanisms play important and persistent roles. Here we use the Drosophila melanogaster intestine to investigate the nature and importance of cellular sex in an adult somatic organ in vivo. We find that the adult intestinal epithelium is a cellular mosaic of different sex differentiation pathways, and displays extensive sex differences in expression of genes with roles in growth and metabolism. Cell-specific reversals of the sexual identity of adult intestinal stem cells uncovers the key role this identity has in controlling organ size, reproductive plasticity and response to genetically induced tumours. Unlike previous examples of sexually dimorphic somatic stem cell activity, the sex differences in intestinal stem cell behaviour arise from intrinsic mechanisms that control cell cycle duration and involve a new doublesex- and fruitless-independent branch of the sex differentiation pathway downstream of transformer. Together, our findings indicate that the plasticity of an adult somatic organ is reversibly controlled by its sexual identity, imparted by a new mechanism that may be active in more tissues than previously recognized

Memory-efficient segmentation of high-resolution volumetric MicroCT images

In recent years, 3D convolutional neural networks have become the dominant approach for volumetric medical image segmentation. However, compared to their 2D counterparts, 3D networks introduce substantially more training parameters and higher requirement for the GPU memory. This has become a major limiting factor for designing and training 3D networks for high-resolution volumetric images. In this work, we propose a novel memory-efficient network architecture for 3D high-resolution image segmentation. The network incorporates both global and local features via a two-stage U-net-based cascaded framework and at the first stage, a memory-efficient U-net (meU-net) is developed. The features learnt at the two stages are connected via post-concatenation, which further improves the information flow. The proposed segmentation method is evaluated on an ultra high-resolution microCT dataset with typically 250 million voxels per volume. Experiments show that it outperforms state-of-the-art 3D segmentation methods in terms of both segmentation accuracy and memory efficiency

Food, microbes, sex and old age: on the plasticity of gastrointestinal innervation

The gastrointestinal tract is innervated by its own enteric nervous system and by extrinsic neurons that connect it with the central nervous system. Innervation allows the gastrointestinal tract to sense and respond to diverse stimuli, adjusting motility and secretion, but also affecting our physiology, behaviour and immunity. The mechanisms underlying the formation of gastrointestinal neurons are beginning to be elucidated; those that keep them plastic over an organism's lifetime remain to be explored. Here, we review the effects of microbiota, nutrients, sex and ageing on the morphology and function of gastrointestinal innervation in mammals, and discuss how this plasticity shapes gut-brain crosstalk and whole-body physiology. We also highlight insights gained by nascent studies of the enteric innervation of Drosophila melanogaster

Diseño de un reservorio circular de almacenamiento de agua potable de 2700 m3 de capacidad en Lima

El trabajo escogido es un reservorio de almacenamiento de 2700 m3 ubicado en el departamento de Lima. Se realizará el predimensionamiento de la cúpula, viga anillo, pared cilíndrica y losa de fondo. Posteriormente se modelará el reservorio en el programa computacional SAP 2000. Finalmente, se realizará el análisis sísmico mediante el método estático. Para finalizar se diseñarán los elementos estructurales del reservorio y se evaluarán si los esfuerzos admisibles son menores a los permisibles

Estudio de pre factibilidad para la instalación de una planta de producción de larvas de mosca soldado negra (Hermetia illucens)

El presente proyecto consiste en el estudio de factibilidad para la implementación de una empresa dedicada a la producción de larvas de mosca soldado negra, ofreciendo un producto innovador que satisfaga las necesidades de alimento del sector avícola en la ciudad de Lima. Por esta razón este proyecto de investigación se basa en el análisis socio económico de nuestro país y en el crecimiento del sector avícola en el país y sobre todo en la ciudad de lima, se realizó el estudio de mercado definiendo de esta manera la oferta y la demanda; a su vez se desarrolló un estudio técnico en el que se habla del tamaño del proyecto determinándose la capacidad utilizada; seguidamente se desarrolló un estudio organizacional el cual se establece los organigramas en la empresa con las respectivas funciones del personal, se realizó el estudio económico financiero del proyecto, en el cual se determinará la factibilidad y rentabilidad del proyecto a invertir. Finalmente se presentarán las conclusiones y recomendaciones del trabajo.The present project consists of the feasibility study for the implementation of a company dedicated to the production of black soldier fly larvae, offering an innovative product that satisfies the food needs of the poultry sector in the city of Lima. Habilidades directivas y su influencia en la gestión educativa del Instituto Tecnológico “De Concepción”- Concepción - Región Junín 2022

El presente estudio tuvo como objeto principal verificar cómo las habilidades directivas influyen en la gestión pedagógica del Instituto Tecnológico “De Concepción”. Los métodos utilizados fueron cuantitativos, tipo básico, diseño no empírico, nivel explicativo, causalidad. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 78 trabajadores entre directivos, docentes y personal administrativo se le aplicó dos cuestionarios con un total de 35 preguntas. Para el análisis de los datos se utilizaron estadísticos correspondientes a la regresión logística ordinal. De acuerdo a los resultados, la estimación de los parámetros tiene el nivel de significancia p-valor*= 0.000< 0.05 y se rechaza H0. Para realizar la prueba de Nagelkerke, que determina el nivel de influencia entre la variable independiente sobre la variable dependiente, se realizó la prueba de tau de kendall a fin de determinar el nivel de relación entre las dos variables, desarrollado esto, se tiene que según Nagelkerke es del 97,6 %, ajustado para el modelo propuesto, por lo tanto, se infiere que existe una influencia alta de las habilidades directivas sobre la gestión educativa en la organización
