    Problems of tomato marketing in Claveria, Northern Mindanao, Philippines : the role of farmers' associations : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Agricultural Economics at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

    The role of farmers' association in tomato marketing cannot be underemphasised. Previous studies revealed that total production of tomatoes from the Northern Mindanao growers were distributed to agents, assembler-wholesalers, cooperatives or farmers' associations wholesalers, wholesaler-retailers and retailers. A considerable proportion of tomatoes (25%) were directed to cooperatives or farmers' association. The study surveyed two farmers' associations (UFCI and CPFA) and non-member growers with the objectives of examining the problems perceived by growers in marketing tomatoes, exploring the perceived problems of the associations and presenting the efforts of two farmers' associations in overcoming these problems. It is concluded that contract selling should be considered by UFCI while CPFA should investigate its present contract agreement. A continuous member education programme (e.g. twice a year) and the encouragement to attend open discussion sessions are important suggestions to improve the performance of the associations

    Noisy quantum teleportation: An experimental study on the influence of local environments

    We report experimental results on the action of selected local environments on the fidelity of the quantum teleportation protocol, taking into account non-ideal, realistic entangled resources. Different working conditions are theoretically identified, where a noisy protocol can be made almost insensitive to further addition of noise. We put to test these conditions on a photonic implementation of the quantum teleportation algorithm, where two polarization entangled qubits act as the entangled resource and a path qubit on Alice encodes the state to be teleported. Bob's path qubit is used to implement a local environment, while the environment on Alice's qubit is simulated as a weighed average of different pure states. We obtain a good agreement with the theoretical predictions, we experimentally recreate the conditions to obtain a noise-induced enhancement of the protocol fidelity, and we identify parameter regions of increased insensibility to interactions with specific noisy environments.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Remote state preparation of a photonic quantum state via quantum teleportation

    We demonstrate an experimental realization of remote state preparation via the quantum teleportation algorithm, using an entangled photon pair in the polarization degree of freedom as the quantum resource. The input state is encoded on the path of one of the photons from the pair. The improved experimental scheme allows us to control the preparation and teleportation of a state over the entire Bloch sphere with a resolution of the degree of mixture given by the coherence length of the photon pair. Both the preparation of the input state and the implementation of the quantum gates are performed in a pair of chained displaced Sagnac interferometers, which contribute to the overall robustness of the setup. An average fidelity above 0.9 is obtained for the remote state preparation process. This scheme allows for a prepared state to be transmitted on every repetition of the experiment, thus giving an intrinsic success probability of 1.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Applied Physics B:Lasers and Optic

    An Optimizing IS-LM Framework with Endogenous Investment

    Dynamic optimizing models with an IS-LM-type structure and slow price adjustments have been used for much recent monetary policy analysis, but usually with capital and investment treated as exogenous a significant restriction. This paper demonstrates that investment decisions can be endogenized without undue complexity in such models and that these can be calibrated to provide reasonably realistic dynamic behavior. It is necessary, however, to include capital adjustment costs; models with no adjustment costs match cyclical data very poorly. Indeed, their match is considerably poorer than models with constant capital. The paper also finds that the preferred adjustment-cost specification is not close to quadratic.

    The distance to the C component of I Zw 18 and its star formation history: A probabilistic approach

    We analyzed the resolved stellar population of the C component of the extremely metal-poor dwarf galaxy Izw18 in order to evaluate its distance and star formation history as accurately as possible. In particular, we aimed at answering the question of whether this stellar population is young. We developed a probabilistic approach to analyzing high-quality photometric data obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys of the Hubble Space Telescope. This approach gives a detailed account of the various stochastic aspects of star formation. We carried out two successive models of the stellar population of interest, paying attention to how our assumptions could affect the results. We found a distance to the C component of I Zw 18 as high as 27 Mpc, a significantly higher value than those cited in previous works. The star formation history we inferred from the observational data shows various interesting features: a strong starburst that lasted for about 15 Myr, a more moderate one that occurred approx 100 Myr ago, a continuous process of star formation between both starbursts, and a possible episode of low level star formation at ages over 100 Myr. The stellar population studied is likely approx 125 Myr old, although ages of a few Gyr cannot be ruled out.     Phase Synchronization and Polarization Ordering of Globally-Coupled Oscillators

    We introduce a prototype model for globally-coupled oscillators in which each element is given an oscillation frequency and a preferential oscillation direction (polarization), both randomly distributed. We found two collective transitions: to phase synchronization and to polarization ordering. Introducing a global-phase and a polarization order parameters, we show that the transition to global-phase synchrony is found when the coupling overcomes a critical value and that polarization order enhancement can not take place before global-phase synchrony. We develop a self-consistent theory to determine both order parameters in good agreement with numerical results

    Simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters of a subwavelength structure based on the weak value formalism

    A mathematical extension of the weak value formalism to the simultaneous measurement of multiple parameters is presented in the context of an optical focused vector beam scatterometry experiment. In this example, preselection and postselection are achieved via spatially-varying polarization control, which can be tailored to optimize the sensitivity to parameter variations. Initial experiments for the two-parameter case demonstrate that this method can be used to measure physical parameters with resolutions at least 1000 times smaller than the wavelength of illumination

    Entanglement breaking channels and entanglement sudden death

    The occurrence of entanglement sudden death in the evolution of a bipartite system depends on both the initial state and the channel responsible for the evolution. An extreme case is that of entanglement braking channels, which are channels that acting on only one of the subsystems drives them to full disentanglement regardless of the initial state. In general, one can find certain combinations of initial states and channels acting on one or both subsystems that can result in entanglement sudden death or not. Neither the channel nor the initial state, but their combination, is responsible for this effect, but their combination. In this work we show that, in all cases, when entanglement sudden death occurs, the evolution can be mapped to that of an effective entanglement breaking channel on a modified initial state. Our results allow to anticipate which states will suffer entanglement sudden death or not for a given evolution. An experiment with polarization entangled photons demonstrates the utility of this result in a variety of cases
