Object Detection Through Exploration With A Foveated Visual Field
We present a foveated object detector (FOD) as a biologically-inspired
alternative to the sliding window (SW) approach which is the dominant method of
search in computer vision object detection. Similar to the human visual system,
the FOD has higher resolution at the fovea and lower resolution at the visual
periphery. Consequently, more computational resources are allocated at the
fovea and relatively fewer at the periphery. The FOD processes the entire
scene, uses retino-specific object detection classifiers to guide eye
movements, aligns its fovea with regions of interest in the input image and
integrates observations across multiple fixations. Our approach combines modern
object detectors from computer vision with a recent model of peripheral pooling
regions found at the V1 layer of the human visual system. We assessed various
eye movement strategies on the PASCAL VOC 2007 dataset and show that the FOD
performs on par with the SW detector while bringing significant computational

Integrated Approach Using Intuitionistic Fuzzy Multicriteria Decision-Making to Support Classifier Selection for Technology Adoption in Patients with Parkinson Disease: Algorithm Development and Validation
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is reported to be among the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases globally, presenting ongoing challenges and increasing burden on healthcare systems. In an effort to support PD patients, their carers, and the wider healthcare sector to manage this incurable condition, the focus has begun to shift away from traditional treatments. One of the most contemporary treatments includes prescribing Assistive Technologies (ATs), which are viewed as a way to promote independent living and deliver remote care. However, the uptake of these ATs is varied with some users not ready or willing to accept all forms of AT and others only willing to adopt low-technology solutions. Consequently, to manage both the demands on resources and the efficiency with which ATs are deployed, new approaches are needed to automatically assess or predict a user’s likelihood to accept and adopt a particular AT before it is prescribed. Classification algorithms can be employed to automatically consider the range of factors impacting AT adoption likelihood, thereby potentially supporting more effective AT allocation. From a computational perspective, different classification algorithms and selection criteria offer various opportunities and challenges to address this need
Xanthan Gum–Konjac Glucomannan Blend Hydrogel for Wound Healing
Hydrogels are considered to be the most ideal materials for the production of wound dressings since they display a three-dimensional structure that mimics the native extracellular matrix of skin as well as a high-water content, which confers a moist environment at the wound site. Until now, different polymers have been used, alone or blended, for the production of hydrogels aimed for this biomedical application. From the best of our knowledge, the application of a xanthan gum-konjac glucomannan blend has not been used for the production of wound dressings. Herein, a thermo-reversible hydrogel composed of xanthan gum-konjac glucomannan (at different concentrations (1% and 2% w/v) and ratios (50/50 and 60/40)) was produced and characterized. Impacto de efluentes urbanos sobre la calidad microbiológica de las aguas receptoras de la cuenca del Ebro
l agua es un recurso natural de cara´cter limitado y variable, tanto en cantidad como en calidad, que debe protegerse. Entre los problemas ma´s importantes que afectan a la calidad del agua en Espan~a destacan las presiones que ejercen los nu´cleos urbanos sobre las masas de aguas super ciales y subterra´neas, debido a las bajas exigencias de la normativa actual sobre depuracio´n de aguas residuales urbanas en Espan~a, no acordes con las necesidades existentes. En concreto, la Directiva 91/271/CEE establece li´mites de materia orga´nica, so´lidos suspendidos y nutrientes en los e uentes de las estaciones depuradoras de aguas residuales (EDAR). Sin embargo, no hay requerimientos legales para reducir la carga microbiolo´gica presente en las aguas residuales de manera que los pato´genos persistentes al tratamiento se descargan al cauce receptor, suponiendo un riesgo para el medio ambiente y la salud pu´blica, adema´s de limitar posteriores usos del agu
Efficacy and safety of lurbinectedin and doxorubicin in relapsed small cell lung cancer. Results from an expansion cohort of a phase I study
Background A phase I study found remarkable activity and manageable toxicity for doxorubicin (bolus) plus lurbinectedin (1-h intravenous [i.v.] infusion) on Day 1 every three weeks (q3wk) as second-line therapy in relapsed small cell lung cancer (SCLC). An expansion cohort further evaluated this combination. Patients and methods Twenty-eight patients with relapsed SCLC after no more than one line of cytotoxic-containing chemotherapy were treated: 18 (64%) with sensitive disease (chemotherapy-free interval [CTFI] ≥90 days) and ten (36%) with resistant disease (CTFI <90 days; including six with refractory disease [CTFI ≤30 days]). Results Ten patients showed confirmed response (overall response rate [ORR] = 36%); median progression-free survival (PFS) = 3.3 months; median overall survival (OS) = 7.9 months. ORR was 50% in sensitive disease (median PFS = 5.7 months; median OS = 11.5 months) and 10% in resistant disease (median PFS = 1.3 months; median OS = 4.6 months). The main toxicity was transient and reversible myelosuppression. Treatment-related non-hematological events (fatigue, nausea, decreased appetite, vomiting, alopecia) were mostly mild or moderate. Conclusion Doxorubicin 40 mg/m(2) and lurbinectedin 2.0 mg/m(2) on Day 1 q3wk has shown noteworthy activity in relapsed SCLC and a manageable safety profile. The combination is being evaluated as second-line therapy for SCLC in an ongoing, randomized phase III trial. Clinical trial registration www.ClinicalTrials.gov code: NCT01970540. Evolution and Optimality of Similar Neural Mechanisms for Perception and Action during Search
A prevailing theory proposes that the brain's two visual pathways, the ventral and dorsal, lead to differing visual processing and world representations for conscious perception than those for action. Others have claimed that perception and action share much of their visual processing. But which of these two neural architectures is favored by evolution? Successful visual search is life-critical and here we investigate the evolution and optimality of neural mechanisms mediating perception and eye movement actions for visual search in natural images. We implement an approximation to the ideal Bayesian searcher with two separate processing streams, one controlling the eye movements and the other stream determining the perceptual search decisions. We virtually evolved the neural mechanisms of the searchers' two separate pathways built from linear combinations of primary visual cortex receptive fields (V1) by making the simulated individuals' probability of survival depend on the perceptual accuracy finding targets in cluttered backgrounds. We find that for a variety of targets, backgrounds, and dependence of target detectability on retinal eccentricity, the mechanisms of the searchers' two processing streams converge to similar representations showing that mismatches in the mechanisms for perception and eye movements lead to suboptimal search. Three exceptions which resulted in partial or no convergence were a case of an organism for which the targets are equally detectable across the retina, an organism with sufficient time to foveate all possible target locations, and a strict two-pathway model with no interconnections and differential pre-filtering based on parvocellular and magnocellular lateral geniculate cell properties. Thus, similar neural mechanisms for perception and eye movement actions during search are optimal and should be expected from the effects of natural selection on an organism with limited time to search for food that is not equi-detectable across its retina and interconnected perception and action neural pathways
Thermal, dielectrical and mechanical response of α and β-poly(vinilydene fluoride)/Co-MgO nanocomposites
Nanocomposites of the self-forming core-shell Co-MgO nanoparticles, which were of approximately 100 nm in diameter, and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer have been prepared. When the polymer is crystallized in the α-phase, the introduction of the nanoparticles leads to nucleation of the γ-phase of PVDF, increasing also the melting temperature of the polymer. With the introduction of the Co-MgO particles, the dielectric constant of the material slightly increases and the storage modulus decreases with respect to the values obtained for the pure polymer
Thermodynamics, transport and relaxation in non-conformal theories
We study the equilibrium and near-equilibrium properties of a holographic
five-dimensional model consisting of Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar field
with a non-trivial potential. The dual four-dimensional gauge theory is not
conformal and, at zero temperature, exhibits a renormalisation group flow
between two different fixed points. We quantify the deviations from
conformality both in terms of thermodynamic observables and in terms of the
bulk viscosity of the theory. The ratio of bulk over shear viscosity violates
Buchel's bound. We study relaxation of small-amplitude, homogeneous
perturbations by computing the quasi-normal modes of the system at zero spatial
momentum. In this approximation we identify two different relaxation channels.
At high temperatures, the different pressures first become approximately equal
to one another, and subsequently this average pressure evolves towards the
equilibrium value dictated by the equation of state. At low temperatures, the
average pressure first evolves towards the equilibrium pressure, and only later
the different pressures become approximately equal to one another
Use of electrospinning to develop antimicrobial biodegradable multilayer systems: encapsulation of cinnamaldehyde and their physicochemical characterization
In this work, three active bio-based multilayer structures, using a polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate film with a valerate content of 8 % (PHBV8) as support, were developed. To this end, a zein interlayer with or without cinnamaldehyde (CNMA) was directly electrospun onto one side of the PHBV8 film and the following systems were developed: (1) without an outer layer; (2) using a PHBV8 film as outer layer; and (3) using an alginate-based film as outer layer. These multilayer structures were characterized in terms of water vapour and oxygen permeabilities, transparency, intermolecular arrangement and thermal properties. The antimicrobial activity of the active bio-based multilayer systems and the release of CNMA in a food simulant were also evaluated. Results showed that the presence of different outer layers reduced the transport properties and transparency of the multilayer films. The active bio-based multilayer systems showed antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes being the multilayer structure prepared with CNMA and PHBV outer layers (PHBV + zein/CNMA + PHBV) the one that showed the greater antibacterial activity. The release of CNMA depended on the multilayer structures, where both Fick's and Case II transport-polymer relaxation explained the release of CNMA from the multilayer systems.Acknowledgments: Miguel A. Low sequence diversity of the prion protein gene (PRNP) in wild deer and goat species from Spain
Abstract The first European cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in free-ranging reindeer and wild elk were confirmed in Norway in 2016 highlighting the urgent need to understand transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in the context of European deer species and the many individual populations throughout the European continent. The genetics of the prion protein gene (PRNP) are crucial in determining the relative susceptibility to TSEs. To establish PRNP gene sequence diversity for free-ranging ruminants in the Northeast of Spain, the open reading frame was sequenced in over 350 samples from five species: Iberian red deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), fallow deer (Dama dama), Iberian wild goat (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) and Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra p. pyrenaica). Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were found in red deer: a silent mutation at codon 136, and amino acid changes T98A and Q226E. Pyrenean chamois revealed a silent SNP at codon 38 and an allele with a single octapeptide-repeat deletion. No polymorphisms were found in roe deer, fallow deer and Iberian wild goat. This apparently low variability of the PRNP coding region sequences of four major species in Spain resembles previous findings for wild mammals, but implies that larger surveys will be necessary to find novel, low frequency PRNP gene alleles that may be utilized in CWD risk control
