open3noThe paper analyzes the seismic improvement of an historical masonry chimney by the tuned mass dumper (TMD) application. The chimney was built at the beginning of XX century in the northern region in Italy and the mechanical characteristics of the masonry, in terms of elastic modulus and compressive strength, used in the finite element models (FEMs) has been determined by a set of experimental tests. A first FEM is implemented by element beam (FEM 1) a second FEM is implemented by solid elements (FEM 2); in both, two configurations are studied: the chimney without TMD and the chimney with TMD. By a time history analysis the main characteristic of the TMD in the terms of mass, stiffness and damper values are valued and optimized for different positioning of the oscillating mass. Finally, a structural solution for the support of the TMD is proposed.Longarini, Nicola; Zucca, Marco; Migliacci, AntonioLongarini, Nicola; Zucca, Marco; Migliacci, Antoni

This paper is meant to deliver an overview on the damages and the following repairs of the structures of the 26th and 27th floor due to the airplane accident occurred on April, the 18th 2002. An aircraft 112 TC Commander impacted the facade of the Pirelli skyscraper getting into the building, where its gasoline tanks exploded. The first part of the paper focuses on a simplified analysis with the aims of evaluating the blast impulse and the peak pressure caused by the explosion on the floors structures. Then, a description of the realignment of the deck and the repairing operations are briefly summarized

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between perceptions and electrical senoidal current stimulation (ESCS). METHOD: The study population comprise 100 healthy volunteers. ESCS of 5 Hz and 2 kHz were applied to the left index finger at one and 1.5 sensory threshold. Following each stimulus train a list of eight words (four related to thin fiber sensations and four related to thick fiber sensations) was presented to the subjects who were asked to choose the three words closer to the experienced sensation. Each chosen word was given a score 1; final results were obtained by the sum of the scores for the words related to thin and thick fiber systems for each situation. RESULTS: For 5 Hz ESCS at one and 1.5 sensory threshold thin fibers had significantly higher scores than thick fibers; for 2 kHz ESCS, thick fibers had significantly higher scores. CONCLUSION: These results show that there is a relation between different sensations and ESCS of different frequencies.OBJETIVO: Estudar a relação entre as sensações evocadas por estimulação elétrica por corrente senoidal (ESCS). City of São Paulo UniversityUNIFESP Neurology and Neurosurgery DepartmentFederal University of Minas Gerais Electrical Engineering DepartmentUNIFESP, Neurology and Neurosurgery DepartmentSciEL

The problems concerning the requalification of dismissed and, since many years, abandoned industrial plants and sites require different approaches and competencies. The authors have been involved in many different cases bounded to the industrial activities which have been developed during the early first half of the last century around Milano city, some of them have been firstly dismissed at the beginning of 80’s years. In many cases, problems concerning the land pollution, and the prior related costs of the land drainage have stopped the different necessary approaches regarding the assessment on the actual conservation and damage evaluation of existing abandoned buildings. Among these , works for land drainage and reclamation are planned, some in progress; in particular the “Innocenti-Maserati firm” is one of a major remaining industrial complex in the suburban district of Milano, with its 4 industrial hangars, completed dismissed and emptied out, and showing the steel bearing structures in their impressive shape of large dimension (figure 1). The paper focuses on the evaluation of the actual mechanical and physical properties of the structural elements, no less the modelling about one of the dismissed buildings; in particular the building under investigation is the oldest of the four. The paper illustrates a brief history of the Innocenti Milan Industrial Compound, the description of the structures, the on-site investigation and Laboratory tests for the evaluation of the overall distribution and degree of corrosion attack in steel structural elements
