The number of multicultural people has increased over many years with the globalization of the world economy. Japan is no exception. Ibasho is a Japanese unique concept and means one’s place where one feels secure, comfortable, and accepted. There are very few studies on ibasho among people with multicultural backgrounds. Suzuki (2018) refers to relationships among identity/cultural identity formation, mental health (including subjective well-being) and ibasho. In this paper, we examined the relationship among mental health, identity and ibasho with a focus on ibasho in the case of two groups of people with multicultural backgrounds: International students (N = 105) living in Japan, from 30 countries (Study 1) and Japanese-Indonesian young people (N = 10) living in Indonesia (Study 2). In Study 1, a questionnaire survey and interviews were conducted, and in Study 2, multiple interviews were carried out. In both studies, the analysis was mainly qualitative in nature. The results showed that there was the relationship among ibasho, mental health, and (cultural) identity, and creating ibasho was very useful to support for cultural identity formation of multicultural people as well as to maintain their mental health

This essay interprets Kikuchi Kan/Hiroshi (1888-1948) \u27s bestselling 1920 newspaper serial, Shinju fujin (Madame Pearl), in light of media representations of a real-life celebrity named Yanagihara Akiko (1885-1967). Yanagihara was a prominent peer, socialite, writer and beauty known by the penname Byakuren (White Lotus). Taishō period readers understood Byakuren to be the model for Ruriko, the fivtional heroine of Shinju fujin, yet scholars have not fully examined the important connection between these two stars (one real, the other fictional), nor the broader impact media celebrity culture had in shaping literary creations. Using newspaper presentations of Byakuren, particularly a 1918 biographical feature titled "Tsukushi no joō Akiko" (Akiko, Queen of Tsukushi), I analyze Shinju fujin as a work that makes active use of readers\u27 profound interest in Byakuren to explore concerns about female sexuality and agency. By building on the Ruriko-Byakuren connection and engaging with real topics covered in the national print media, the novel encouragesreaders to reexamine issues such as marriage between he nobility and nouveau riche, and questions about sexual transgression and female chastity. Also, by referencing newspaper stories and media coverage in this way, Shinju fujin self-reflexively explores questions of "truth" and "fiction" and the increasingly complex desires of the newspaper readership. In presenting a new analysis of Shinju hujin as part of a broader network of newspaper articles and celebrity coverage, this essay demonstrates the way in which this Taishō period bestseller dynamically incorporates and reexamines its own social context

Background: The contents of children's daily activities and the amount of time spent on them has been directly linked to their health and development. Parental health behavior has also been considered a key factor, and the aim of this study was to determine the relationship between parent/guardian health literacy (HL) and their child's time spent at home by behavioral types. The study was conducted in elementary schools in Japan.\ud Method: The target subjects for this study were elementary schoolchildren (all grades, aged 6 to 12 years) and their parents/guardians, and almost 3000 schoolchildren and their parents/guardians in the Northern and Southern districts in Japan participated. The questionnaire for parents/guardians included amount of time spent per day on the seven major behavioral contents of their child's time at home, on weekdays and weekends, respectively, and a shortened five-item health literacy (HL) scale. Parent/guardian HL results were categorized into two groups (low HL group and high HL group), and we analyzed the association between the HL and child's time spent at home by behavioral contents. Results: Children in the high HL parent/guardian group spent significantly less time watching TV and playing games than those in the low HL group, both on weekdays and weekends. Time spent playing outside on weekdays and on hobbies on weekdays and weekends was significantly longer for children in the high HL parent/guardian group than in the low HL group. Results of logistic regression analyses adjusted for confounders showed that higher parental/guardian HL reduced children's spending more than 30 minutes watching TV or playing games and increased children's spending more than 30 minutes on outside playing and doing hobbies. Conclusions: Parental/guardian HL affected the child's time spent at home. The results could suggest that increasing parental/guardian HL has strong potential to improve children's major lifestyle behaviors

One of the most important ceremonies that the bongthing, a kind of shaman of the Lepchas, performes is that of Mt. Kangchenjunga, an abode of the protector of Sikkim as well as of the Lepchas. On the other side of the Kangchenjunga is the legendary land called Mayel inhabited by the immortals who are patrons of crops and fertility and guarded by three demonic brothers, one a guardian of hunters and the other two guardians of Himalayan animals. Bongthing is mythologically said to be the inhabitant of the Tiamtan, an intermediate place between the deities\u27 Rum land and the earth. In the Sikkimese version, Tiamtan is the site where the King Kesar, a legendary hero of Tibetan origin, resided for a while before his incarnation as a savior on the earth. With the tide of modernization of Sikkim, the legendary hero Kesar has become a war god, while the Kangchenjunga is celebrated with national festivity. These cosmological ideas and their changes are discussed here through the analysis of supplementary data obtained in the field research in Sikkim in 1984 and 1986

There are many kinds of Saimon or sacred narratives presented in Matsuri of Kita-shitara. They are narrated by selected man/men holding fans and gohei, which can be regarded as Shamanistic sticks. It is supposed that Deities gather through the narratives and play with people in the place of Matsuri. These sacred narratives can be considered as Speeches of Deities, and are origin of the popular version of narrative Katari
