Transportation Systems Evaluation
A methodology for the analysis of transportation systems consisting of five major interacting elements is reported. The analysis begins with the causes of travel demand: geographic, economic, and demographic characteristics as well as attitudes toward travel. Through the analysis, the interaction of these factors with the physical and economic characteristics of the transportation system is determined. The result is an evaluation of the system from the point of view of both passenger and operator. The methodology is applicable to the intraurban transit systems as well as major airlines. Applications of the technique to analysis of a PRT system and a study of intraurban air travel are given. In the discussion several unique models or techniques are mentioned: i.e., passenger preference modeling, an integrated intraurban transit model, and a series of models to perform airline analysis
Arago (1810): the first experimental result against the ether
95 years before Special Relativity was born, Arago attempted to detect the
absolute motion of the Earth by measuring the deflection of starlight passing
through a prism fixed to the Earth. The null result of this experiment gave
rise to the Fresnel's hypothesis of an ether partly dragged by a moving
substance. In the context of Einstein's Relativity, the sole frame which is
privileged in Arago's experiment is the proper frame of the prism, and the null
result only says that Snell's law is valid in that frame. We revisit the
history of this premature first evidence against the ether theory and calculate
the Fresnel's dragging coefficient by applying the Huygens' construction in the
frame of the prism. We expose the dissimilar treatment received by the ray and
the wave front as an unavoidable consequence of the classical notions of space
and time.Comment: 16 pages. To appear in European Journal of Physic
Dimensional Reduction without Extra Continuous Dimensions
We describe a novel approach to dimensional reduction in classical field
theory. Inspired by ideas from noncommutative geometry, we introduce extended
algebras of differential forms over space-time, generalized exterior
derivatives and generalized connections associated with the "geometry" of
space-times with discrete extra dimensions. We apply our formalism to theories
of gauge- and gravitational fields and find natural geometrical origins for an
axion- and a dilaton field, as well as a Higgs field.Comment: 23 page
Bounds on Lorentz and CPT Violation from the Earth-Ionosphere Cavity
Electromagnetic resonant cavities form the basis of many tests of Lorentz
invariance involving photons. The effects of some forms of Lorentz violation
scale with cavity size. We investigate possible signals of violations in the
naturally occurring resonances formed in the Earth-ionosphere cavity.
Comparison with observed resonances places the first terrestrial constraints on
coefficients associated with dimension-three Lorentz-violating operators at the
level of 10^{-20} GeV.Comment: 8 pages REVTe
On the Sensitivity of a Hollow Sphere as a Multi-modal Resonant Gravitational Wave Detector
We present a numerical analysis to simulate the response of a spherical
resonant gravitational wave detector and to compute its sensitivity. Under the
assump- tion of optimal filtering, we work out the sensitivity curve for a
sphere first taking into account only a single transducer, and then using a
coherent analysis of the whole set of transducers.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures, published versio
Improved test of Lorentz Invariance in Electrodynamics using Rotating Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillators
We present new results from our test of Lorentz invariance, which compares
two orthogonal cryogenic sapphire microwave oscillators rotating in the lab. We
have now acquired over 1 year of data, allowing us to avoid the short data set
approximation (less than 1 year) that assumes no cancelation occurs between the
and parameters from the photon
sector of the standard model extension. Thus, we are able to place independent
limits on all eight and parameters.
Our results represents up to a factor of 10 improvement over previous non
rotating measurements (which independently constrained 7 parameters), and is a
slight improvement (except for ) over results from
previous rotating experiments that assumed the short data set approximation.
Also, an analysis in the Robertson-Mansouri-Sexl framework allows us to place a
new limit on the isotropy parameter of
, an improvement of a factor of 2.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Nonlinear equation for curved stationary flames
A nonlinear equation describing curved stationary flames with arbitrary gas
expansion , subject to the
Landau-Darrieus instability, is obtained in a closed form without an assumption
of weak nonlinearity. It is proved that in the scope of the asymptotic
expansion for the new equation gives the true solution to the
problem of stationary flame propagation with the accuracy of the sixth order in
In particular, it reproduces the stationary version of the
well-known Sivashinsky equation at the second order corresponding to the
approximation of zero vorticity production. At higher orders, the new equation
describes influence of the vorticity drift behind the flame front on the front
structure. Its asymptotic expansion is carried out explicitly, and the
resulting equation is solved analytically at the third order. For arbitrary
values of the highly nonlinear regime of fast flow burning is
investigated, for which case a large flame velocity expansion of the nonlinear
equation is proposed.Comment: 29 pages 4 figures LaTe
The Gamma-Ray Blazar Content of the Northern Sky
Using survey data, we have re-evaluated the correlation of flat spectrum
radio sources with EGRET sources in the Northern sky. A likelihood analysis
incorporating the radio and X-ray properties and the Gamma-ray source
localization is used to gauge the reliability of associations and to search for
counterparts of previously unidentified EGRET sources. Above |b|=10deg, where
the classification is complete, we find that 70% of the Northern EGRET sources
have counterparts similar to the bright EGRET blazars. For several of these we
identify known blazar counterparts more likely than the earlier proposed 3EG
association; for ~20 we have new identifications. Spectroscopic confirmation of
these candidates is in progress and we have found flat spectrum radio quasars
and BL Lac counterparts with redshifts as high as 4. We also find strong
evidence for a set of 28 objects with no plausible counterpart like the known
EGRET Blazars. These thus represent either a new extragalactic population or a
population of Galactic objects with a large scale height. The survey has been
extended into the plane, where we find several new blazar candidates; the bulk
of the sources are, however, Galactic. Looking ahead to the GLAST era we
predict that several of the present 3EG sources are composite and that higher
resolution data will break these into multiple Blazar IDs.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Ap
Sensitivity of a VIRGO pair to stochastic GW backgrounds
The sensitivity of a pair of VIRGO interferometers to gravitational waves
backgrounds (GW) of cosmological origin is analyzed for the cases of maximal
and minimal overlap of the two detectors. The improvements in the detectability
prospects of scale-invariant and non-scale-invariant logarithmic energy spectra
of relic GW are discussed.Comment: 25 pages in RevTex style with 6 figure
