Culture Counts: How Five Community-Based Organizations Serve Asian and Pacific Islander Youth
This two-year effort to examine cultural competence involved an extensive literature review, a survey of organizations, and in-depth reviews of five community-based organizations: Asian American Recovery Services (Santa Clara office), East Bay Asian Youth Center of Oakland, Filipinos for Affirmative Action, Helping and Outreaching to Peers Everywhere (H.O.P.E.) (API Wellness), and United Cambodian Culture Club (UCCC) (Cambodian Community Development)
On the Persistent Shape and Coherence of Pulsating Auroral Patches
The pulsating aurora covers a broad range of fluctuating shapes that are
poorly characterized. The purpose of this paper is therefore to provide
objective and quantitative measures of the extent to which pulsating auroral
patches maintain their shape, drift and fluctuate in a coherent fashion. We
present results from a careful analysis of pulsating auroral patches using
all-sky cameras. We have identified four well-defined individual patches that
we follow in the patch frame of reference. In this way we avoid the space-time
ambiguity which complicates rocket and satellite measurements. We find that the
shape of the patches is remarkably persistent with 85-100% of the patch being
repeated for 4.5-8.5 min. Each of the three largest patches has a temporal
correlation with a negative dependence on distance, and thus does not fluctuate
in a coherent fashion. A time-delayed response within the patches indicates
that the so-called streaming mode might explain the incoherency. The patches
appear to drift differently from the SuperDARN-determined
X convection velocity.
However, in a nonrotating reference frame the patches drift with 230-287 m/s in
a north eastward direction, which is what typically could be expected for the
convection return flow

Visualising disease progression on multiple variables with vector plots and path plots.
BACKGROUND: It is often desirable to observe how a disease progresses over time in individual patients, rather than graphing group averages; and since multiple outcomes are typically recorded on each patient, it would be advantageous to visualise disease progression on multiple variables simultaneously. METHODS: A variety of vector plots and a path plot have been developed for this purpose, and data from a longitudinal Huntington's disease study are used to illustrate the utility of these graphical methods for exploratory data analysis. RESULTS: Initial and final values for three outcome variables can be easily visualised per patient, along with the change in these variables over time. In addition to the disease trajectory, the path individual patients take from initial to final observation can be traced. Categorical variables can be coded with different types of vectors or paths (e.g. different colours, line types, line thickness) and separate panels can be used to include further categorical or continuous variables, allowing clear visualisation of further information for each individual. In addition, summary statistics such as mean vectors, bivariate interquartile ranges and convex polygons can be included to assist in interpreting trajectories, comparing groups, and detecting multivariate outliers. From Quasars to Extraordinary N-body Problems
We outline reasoning that led to the current theory of quasars and look at
George Contopoulos's place in the long history of the N-body problem. Following
Newton we find new exactly soluble N-body problems with multibody forces and
give a strange eternally pulsating system that in its other degrees of freedom

One, the epistemologic aspiration, resting on the search for scientific truth, and two, the social aspiration, resting on the demonstration of a capacity to contribute to psychological assessment problems in particular. Psychometrics answer essentially to psychology's demand for social utility, leading to the quasi-exclusive attribution of importance to quantitative interpretation. For psychology to be considered an empirical science, it has to establish its capacity for the measurement of psychological phenomena, even if this means that it recognizes that these phenomena are essentially qualitative
Astrophysical evidence for the existence of black holes
Following a short account of the history of the idea of black holes, we
present a review of the current status of the search for observational evidence
of their existence aimed at an audience of relativists rather than astronomers
or astrophysicists. We focus on two different regimes: that of stellar-mass

Sensory Measurements: Coordination and Standardization
Do sensory measurements deserve the label of “measurement”? We argue that they do. They fit with an epistemological view of measurement held in current philosophy of science, and they face the same kinds of epistemological challenges as physical measurements do: the problem of coordination and the problem of standardization. These problems are addressed through the process of “epistemic iteration,” for all measurements. We also argue for distinguishing the problem of standardization from the problem of coordination. To exemplify our claims, we draw on olfactory performance tests, especially studies linking olfactory decline to neurodegenerative disorders
Scenario of Accelerating Universe from the Phenomenological \Lambda- Models
Dark matter, the major component of the matter content of the Universe,
played a significant role at early stages during structure formation. But at
present the Universe is dark energy dominated as well as accelerating. Here,
the presence of dark energy has been established by including a time-dependent
term in the Einstein's field equations. This model is compatible with
the idea of an accelerating Universe so far as the value of the deceleration
parameter is concerned. Possibility of a change in sign of the deceleration
parameter is also discussed. The impact of considering the speed of light as
variable in the field equations has also been investigated by using a well

Stationary Black Holes: Uniqueness and Beyond
The spectrum of known black-hole solutions to the stationary Einstein
equations has been steadily increasing, sometimes in unexpected ways. In
particular, it has turned out that not all black-hole-equilibrium
configurations are characterized by their mass, angular momentum and global
charges. Moreover, the high degree of symmetry displayed by vacuum and
electro-vacuum black-hole spacetimes ceases to exist in self-gravitating
non-linear field theories. This text aims to review some developments in the
subject and to discuss them in light of the uniqueness theorem for the
