Movement of American lobster (Homarus americanus) in the southwestern Gulf of St. Lawrence
A total of 42,445 American lobsters (Homarus americanus) were tagged in thirty-one sites throughout the southwestern Gulf of St. Lawrence between 1980 and 1997. Results from
the recapture of 8503 tagged lobsters showed small distances traveled between the release and the recapture
position for animals ranging in size from 51 to 152 mm carapace length. The average distance traveled ranged
from 2 km in parts of Baie des Chaleurs and western Cape Breton to 19 km in central Northumberland Strait. Lobsters
moved generally along the shore (93% of the dispersion was in areas between the shore and the 20-m bathymetric contour). As a result, lobsters traveled longer distances in sites characterized by a gradually sloping bottom where the distance between the shore and the 20-m contour line was extensive in contrast to areas characterized by rapidly changing depths and by a relatively small amount of habitat shallower than 20 m. In the majority of sites (14 of 19) there was no significant difference between males and females in the average distance they traveled. In four of the five sites females moved farther than males. In general, the average distance traveled by berried females was shorter than that traveled by males or nonberried females. No relationship was observed between the distance traveled and the size of the animal. There was no strong evidence of a relationship between the average distance traveled and the number of days at liberty. In general, lobsters in the southwestern Gulf of St. Lawrence traveled short distances and dispersion was restricted to the nearshore habitat. Further, the distance traveled was not correlated to size, sex, or years at large. These findings show that there is little interaction between American
lobsters from different fishing areas at the benthic level and that American lobster movements should have minimal
consequences for management of the species in the southwestern Gulf of St. Lawrence
This article presents results of a research on primary teachersâ process of development and maintenance of their professional commitment. This research is based on the theory that each person needs to give meaning to his life, that meaning can be found through a commitment to significant work, in this case, teaching. An analysis of data collected in interviews with twelve teachers allowed the authors to establish a foundation for their theory. This text describes the participant teachersâ existential motivations regarding commitment to the teaching profession, including the construction of oneâs self-image, the devotion to others, and the social contribution.Este artĂculo presenta algunos resultados de una investigaciĂłn sobre el proceso de desarrollo y de sostenimiento del compromiso profesional de maestros de la primaria. Real-life experience with ceftolozane/tazobactam in Canada: results from the CLEAR (Canadian LEadership on Antimicrobial Real-life usage) registry.
Objectives Ceftolozane/tazobactam is a cephalosporin/ÎČ-lactamase inhibitor combination with activity against Gram-negative bacilli. We report the use of ceftolozane/tazobactam in Canada using a national registry. Methods The CLEAR registry uses REDCapTM (Research Electronic Data Capture) (online survey, https://is.gd/CLEAR_ceftolozanetazobactam) to capture details associated with clinical use of ceftolozane/tazobactam. Results Data from 51 patients treated in 2020 with ceftolozane/tazobactam are available. Infections treated included hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia (37.3% of patients), ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (15.7%), bone/joint infection (11.8%), complicated intra-abdominal infection (7.8%) and complicated skin and skin structure infection (7.8%). 17.6% of patients had bacteremia and 47.1% were in intensive care. Ceftolozane/tazobactam was primarily used as directed therapy for Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections (92.2% of patients). Ceftolozane/tazobactam was used because of resistance to (86.3%), failure of (11.7%), or adverse effects from (2.0%) previously prescribed antimicrobials. Ceftolozane/tazobactam susceptibility testing was performed on isolates from 88.2% of patients. Ceftolozane/tazobactam was used in combination with another antimicrobial active versus Gram-negative bacilli in 39.2% of patients (aminoglycosides [15.7%], fluoroquinolones [7.8%] and colistin/polymyxin B [7.8%]). The dosage regimen was customized in all patients based on their creatinine clearance. Treatment duration was primarily >10 days (60.8% of patients) with microbiological success in 60.5% and clinical success in 64.4% of patients. 7.8% of patients had adverse effects not requiring drug discontinuation. Conclusions In Canada, ceftolozane/tazobactam is used as directed therapy to treat a variety of severe infections caused MDR P. aeruginosa. It is commonly used in combination with other antimicrobials with relatively high microbiological/clinical cure rates, and an excellent safety profile
