    THE PERCEPTION OF SPECTRALLY REDUCED PREVOCALIC STOP CONSONANTS

    ABSTRACT The present paper investigates the recoverability of detailed spectral features such as formant and burst peak frequencies of prevocalic stop consonants in noise excited channel vocoded speech for bandwidths ranging from 250-2000 Hz. It is shown that some formant frequency information is still recoverable up to 1000 Hz. This challenges the claim that listeners must necessarily rely primarily on temporal or global spectral features because such narrowly localized spectral properties are lost in noise vocoded speech. Listeners' categorization of these stimuli were modelled using empirically measured formant and burst peak frequencies as well as mel-frequency cepstral coefficients in order to evaluate the relative importance of each as correlates to place of articulation perception. It is found that despite a certain level of recoverability for detailed spectral features, spectral shape at burst and voicing onset are better correlates to listeners' perception of stop consonant place of articulation

    Genome-wide association meta-analysis of fish and EPA plus DHA consumption in 17 US and European cohorts

    Background Regular fish and omega-3 consumption may have several health benefits and are recommended by major dietary guidelines. Yet, their intakes remain remarkably variable both within and across populations, which could partly owe to genetic influences. Objective To identify common genetic variants that influence fish and dietary eicosapentaenoic acid plus docosahexaenoic acid (EPA+DHA) consumption. Design We conducted genome-wide association (GWA) meta-analysis of fish (n = 86,467) and EPA+DHA (n = 62,265) consumption in 17 cohorts of European descent from the CHARGE (Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology) Consortium Nutrition Working Group. Results from cohort-specific GWA analyses (additive model) for fish and EPA+DHA consumption were adjusted for age, sex, energy intake, and population stratification, and meta-analyzed separately using fixed-effect meta-analysis with inverse variance weights (METAL software). Additionally, heritability was estimated in 2 cohorts. Results Heritability estimates for fish and EPA+DHA consumption ranged from 0.13-0.24 and 0.12-0.22, respectively. A significant GWA for fish intake was observed for rs9502823 on chromosome 6: each copy of the minor allele (Freq(A) = 0.015) was associated with 0.029 servings/day (similar to 1 serving/month) lower fish consumption (P = 1.96x10(-8)). No significant association was observed for EPA+DHA, although rs7206790 in the obesity-associated FTO gene was among top hits (P = 8.18x10(-7)). Post-hoc calculations demonstrated 95% statistical power to detect a genetic variant associated with effect size of 0.05% for fish and 0.08% for EPA+DHA. Conclusions These novel findings suggest that non-genetic personal and environmental factors are principal determinants of the remarkable variation in fish consumption, representing modifiable targets for increasing intakes among all individuals.     Perceptual systems in all modalities are predominantly sensitive to stimulus change, and many examples of perceptual systems responding to change can be portrayed as instances of enhancing contrast. Multiple findings from perception experiments serve as evidence for spectral contrast explaining fundamental aspects of perception of coarticulated speech, and these findings are consistent with a broad array of known psychoacoustic and neurophysiological phenomena. Beyond coarticulation, important characteristics of speech perception that extend across broader spectral and temporal ranges may best be accounted for by the constant calibration of perceptual systems to maximize sensitivity to change

    Cochlea-scaled spectral entropy predicts rate-invariant intelligibility of temporally distorted sentences1

    Some evidence, mostly drawn from experiments using only a single moderate rate of speech, suggests that low-frequency amplitude modulations may be particularly important for intelligibility. Here, two experiments investigated intelligibility of temporally distorted sentences across a wide range of simulated speaking rates, and two metrics were used to predict results. Sentence intelligibility was assessed when successive segments of fixed duration were temporally reversed (exp. 1), and when sentences were processed through four third-octave-band filters, the outputs of which were desynchronized (exp. 2). For both experiments, intelligibility decreased with increasing distortion. However, in exp. 2, intelligibility recovered modestly with longer desynchronization. Across conditions, performances measured as a function of proportion of utterance distorted converged to a common function. Estimates of intelligibility derived from modulation transfer functions predict a substantial proportion of the variance in listeners’ responses in exp. 1, but fail to predict performance in exp. 2. By contrast, a metric of potential information, quantified as relative dissimilarity (change) between successive cochlear-scaled spectra, is introduced. This metric reliably predicts listeners’ intelligibility across the full range of speaking rates in both experiments. Results support an information-theoretic approach to speech perception and the significance of spectral change rather than physical units of time

    The Inflammatory Potential of the Diet at Midlife Is Associated with Later Healthy Aging in French Adults

    International audienceBackground: While low-grade chronic inflammation has been suggested as a major modulator of healthy aging (HA), no study has yet investigated the link between the inflammatory potential of the diet and multidimensional concepts of HA. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the association between the inflammatory potential of the diet at midlife, as measured by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), and HA assessed 13 y later. Methods: We analyzed data from 2796 participants in the French Supplementation en Vitamines et Mineraux Antioxydants (SU.VI.MAX) study aged 45-60 y at baseline (1994-1995) and initially free of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. During the trial phase of the study (1994-2002), participants received either a placebo or a daily nutritional dose of antioxidant supplement (120 mg vitamin C, 6 mg beta-carotene, 30 mg vitamin E, 100 mu g Se, 20 mg Zn). HA was assessed in 2007-2009, and defined as having no major chronic disease, good physical and cognitive functioning, independence in daily activities, no depressive symptoms, good social health, good overall self-perceived health, and no function-limiting pain. The DII was calculated based on repeated baseline 24-h dietary records. Its association with HA was assessed by robust-error-variance Poisson regression, providing RR estimates. Results: After adjustment for potential confounders, higher DII scores (reflecting a more proinflammatory diet), were associated with a decreased likelihood of HA: RRtertile3/tertile (1) = 0.85 (95% CI: 0.74, 0.99); P-trend = 0.03. Secondary analyses revealed that this association was only significant among participants who had been in the placebo group during the trial phase: RRtertile3/tertile (1) = 0.80 (95% CI: 0.64, 1.00); P-trend = 0.04.     Association of dietary folate and vitamin B-12 intake with genome-wide DNA methylation in blood:a large-scale epigenome-wide association analysis in 5841 individuals

    BACKGROUND: Folate and vitamin B-12 are essential micronutrients involved in the donation of methyl groups in cellular metabolism. However, associations between intake of these nutrients and genome-wide DNA methylation levels have not been studied comprehensively in humans. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether folate and/or vitamin B-12 intake are asssociated with genome-wide changes in DNA methylation in leukocytes. METHODS: A large-scale epigenome-wide association study of folate and vitamin B-12 intake was performed on DNA from 5841 participants from 10 cohorts using Illumina 450k arrays. Folate and vitamin B-12 intakes were calculated from food-frequency questionnaires (FFQs). Continuous and categorical (low compared with high intake) linear regression mixed models were applied per cohort, controlling for confounders. A meta-analysis was performed to identify significant differentially methylated positions (DMPs) and regions (DMRs), and a pathway analysis was performed on the DMR annotated genes. RESULTS: The categorical model resulted in 6 DMPs, which are all negatively associated with folate intake, annotated to FAM64A, WRAP73, FRMD8, CUX1, and LCN8 genes, which have a role in cellular processes including centrosome localization, cell proliferation, and tumorigenesis. Regional analysis showed 74 folate-associated DMRs, of which 73 were negatively associated with folate intake. The most significant folate-associated DMR was a 400-base pair (bp) spanning region annotated to the LGALS3BP gene. In the categorical model, vitamin B-12 intake was associated with 29 DMRs annotated to 48 genes, of which the most significant was a 1100-bp spanning region annotated to the calcium-binding tyrosine phosphorylation-regulated gene (CABYR). Vitamin B-12 intake was not associated with DMPs. CONCLUSIONS: We identified novel epigenetic loci that are associated with folate and vitamin B-12 intake. Interestingly, we found a negative association between folate and DNA methylation. Replication of these methylation loci is necessary in future studies
