Selectron Studies at e-e- and e+e- Colliders
Selectrons may be studied in both e-e- and e+e- collisions at future linear
colliders. Relative to e+e-, the e-e- mode benefits from negligible backgrounds
and \beta threshold behavior for identical selectron pair production, but
suffers from luminosity degradation and increased initial state radiation and
beamstrahlung. We include all of these effects and compare the potential for
selectron mass measurements in the two modes. The virtues of the e-e- collider
far outweigh its disadvantages. In particular, the selectron mass may be
measured to 100 MeV with a total integrated luminosity of 1 fb^-1, while more
than 100 fb^-1 is required in e+e- collisions for similar precision.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figure
Focus on plasma medicine
‘Plasma Healthcare’ is an emerging interdisciplinary research topic
of rapidly growing importance, exploring considerable opportunities at the
interface of plasma physics, chemistry and engineering with life sciences. Some
of the scientific discoveries reported so far have already demonstrated clear
benefits for healthcare in areas of medicine, food safety, environmental hygiene,
and cosmetics. Examples include ongoing studies of prion inactivation, chronic
wound treatment and plasma-mediated cancer therapy. Current research ranges
from basic physical processes, plasma chemical design, to the interaction of
plasmas with (i) eukaryotic (mammalian) cells; (ii) prokaryotic (bacteria) cells,
viruses, spores and fungi; (iii) DNA, lipids, proteins and cell membranes; and
(iv) living human, animal and plant tissues in the presence of biofluids. Of
diverse interests in this new field is the need for hospital disinfection, in particular
with respect to the alarming increase in bacterial resistance to antibiotics, the
concomitant needs in private practices, nursing homes etc, the applications in
personal hygiene—and the enticing possibility to ‘design’ plasmas as possible
pharmaceutical products, employing ionic as well as molecular agents for
medical treatment. The ‘delivery’ of the reactive plasma agents occurs at the
gaseous level, which means that there is no need for a carrier medium and access
to the treatment surface is optimal. This focus issue provides a close look at the
current state of the art in Plasma Medicine with a number of forefront research
articles as well as an introductory review
Quark confinement and the bosonic string
Using a new type of simulation algorithm for the standard SU(3) lattice gauge
theory that yields results with unprecedented precision, we confirm the
presence of a correction to the static quark potential at large
distances , with a coefficient as predicted by the bosonic string
theory. In both three and four dimensions, the transition from perturbative to
string behaviour is evident from the data and takes place at surprisingly small

On the practicality of time-optimal two-qubit Hamiltonian simulation
What is the time-optimal way of using a set of control Hamiltonians to obtain
a desired interaction? Vidal, Hammerer and Cirac [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 (2002)
237902] have obtained a set of powerful results characterizing the time-optimal
simulation of a two-qubit quantum gate using a fixed interaction Hamiltonian
and fast local control over the individual qubits. How practically useful are
these results? We prove that there are two-qubit Hamiltonians such that
time-optimal simulation requires infinitely many steps of evolution, each
infinitesimally small, and thus is physically impractical. A procedure is given
to determine which two-qubit Hamiltonians have this property, and we show that
almost all Hamiltonians do. Finally, we determine some bounds on the penalty
that must be paid in the simulation time if the number of steps is fixed at a
finite number, and show that the cost in simulation time is not too great.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Histoplasma-associated inflammatory pseudotumour of the kidney mimicking renal carcinoma
A 56-year-old female, originally from Suriname, with an otherwise unremarkable previous medical history was found to have a renal mass highly suspicious for renal cancer for which a nephrectomy was performed. Within the kidney, a tumourous mass was found which, on histological examination, showed an inflammatory pseudotumour caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Further investigations revealed an idiopathic CD4+ lymphopenia. Mass lesions mimicking a malignant tumour caused by infection with Histoplasma have rarely been described. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a Histoplasma-associated inflammatory pseudotumour mimicking cancer occurring in the kidney
Obstruction theory on 8-manifolds
This note gives a uniform, self-contained, and fairly direct approach to a
variety of obstruction-theoretic problems on 8-manifolds. We give necessary and
sufficient cohomological critera for the existence of almost complex and almost
quaternionic structures on the tangent bundle and for the reduction of the
structure group to U(3) by the homomorphism U(3) --> O(8) given by the Lie
algebra representation of PU(3).Comment: 19 page
Scalar Top Quark as the Next-to-Lightest Supersymmetric Particle
We study phenomenologically the scenario in which the scalar top quark is
lighter than any other standard supersymmetric partner and also lighter than
the top quark, so that it decays to the gravitino via stop -> W^+ b G. In this
case, scalar top quark events would seem to be very difficult to separate from
top quark pair production. However, we show that, even at a hadron collider, it
is possible to distinguish these two reactions. We show also that the
longitudinal polarization of the final gives insight into the scalar top
