Matter Mixing in Aspherical Core-collapse Supernovae: Three-dimensional Simulations with Single Star and Binary Merger Progenitor Models for SN 1987A
We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of aspherical core-collapse supernovae focusing on the matter mixing in SN 1987A. The impacts of four progenitor (pre-supernova) models and parameterized aspherical explosions are investigated. The four pre-supernova models include a blue supergiant (BSG) model based on a slow merger scenario developed recently for the progenitor of SN 1987A (Urushibata et al. 2018). The others are a BSG model based on a single star evolution and two red supergiant (RSG) models. Among the investigated explosion (simulation) models, a model with the binary merger progenitor model and with an asymmetric bipolar-like explosion, which invokes a jetlike explosion, best reproduces constraints on the mass of high velocity Ni, as inferred from the observed [Fe II] line profiles. The advantage of the binary merger progenitor model for the matter mixing is the flat and less extended profile of the C+O core and the helium layer, which may be characterized by the small helium core mass. From the best explosion model, the direction of the bipolar explosion axis (the strongest explosion direction), the neutron star (NS) kick velocity, and its direction are predicted. Other related implications and future prospects are also given
Osteopontin ablation ameliorates muscular dystrophy by shifting macrophages to a pro-regenerative phenotype.
In the degenerative disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy, inflammatory cells enter muscles in response to repetitive muscle damage. Immune factors are required for muscle regeneration, but chronic inflammation creates a profibrotic milieu that exacerbates disease progression. Osteopontin (OPN) is an immunomodulator highly expressed in dystrophic muscles. Ablation of OPN correlates with reduced fibrosis and improved muscle strength as well as reduced natural killer T (NKT) cell counts. Here, we demonstrate that the improved dystrophic phenotype observed with OPN ablation does not result from reductions in NKT cells. OPN ablation skews macrophage polarization toward a pro-regenerative phenotype by reducing M1 and M2a and increasing M2c subsets. These changes are associated with increased expression of pro-regenerative factors insulin-like growth factor 1, leukemia inhibitory factor, and urokinase-type plasminogen activator. Furthermore, altered macrophage polarization correlated with increases in muscle weight and muscle fiber diameter, resulting in long-term improvements in muscle strength and function in mdx mice. These findings suggest that OPN ablation promotes muscle repair via macrophage secretion of pro-myogenic growth factors
Evidence for proton acceleration and escape from the Puppis A SNR using Fermi-LAT observations
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are the best candidates for galactic cosmic ray acceleration to rela- tivistic energies via diffusive shock acceleration. The gamma-ray emission of SNRs can provide direct evidence of leptonic (inverse Compton and bremsstrahlung) and hadronic (proton-proton interaction and subsequently pion decay) processes. Puppis A is a ∼4 kyr old SNR interacting with interstellar clouds which has been observed in a broad energy band, from radio to gamma-ray. We performed a morphological and spectral analysis of 14 years of observations with Fermi-LAT telescope in order to study its gamma-ray emission. We found a clear asymmetry in high-energy brightness between the eastern and western sides of the remnant, reminiscent to that observed in the X-ray emission. The eastern side, interacting with a molecular cloud, shows a spectrum which can be reproduced by a pion decay model. Moreover, we analyzed two gamma-ray sources located close to the remnant. The hardness of their spectra suggests that the gamma-ray emission can be due to particles escaping from the shock of Puppis A
Wetting-layer transformation for Pb nanocrystals grown on Si(111)
doi:10.1063/1.1812593We present the results of in situ x-ray scattering experiments that investigate the growth of Pb nanocrystalline islands on Si(111). It is conclusively shown that the Pb nanocrystals do not reside on top of a Pb wetting layer. The nucleating Pb nanocrystals transform the highly disordered Pb wetting layer beneath the islands into well-ordered fcc Pb. The surface then consists of fcc Pb islands directly on top of the Si surface with the disordered wetting layer occupying the region between the islands. As the Pb nanocrystals coalesce at higher coverage we observe increasing disorder that is consistent with misfit strain relaxation. These results have important implications for predicting stable Pb island heights
Model for the low-temperature magnetic phases observed in doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}
A classical statistical model for the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the
Cu-spins in the CuO_2 planes of reduced YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} type materials is
presented. The magnetic phases considered are the experimentally observed
high-temperature AFI phase with ordering vector Q_I=(1/2,1/2,0), and the
low-temperature phases: AFII with Q_II=(1/2,1/2,1/2) and intermediate TA (Turn
Angle) phases TAI, TAII and TAIII with components of both ordering vectors. It
is shown that the AFII and TA phases result from an effective ferromagnetic
(FM) type coupling mediated by free spins in the CuO_x basal plane. Good
agreement with experimental data is obtained for realistic model parameters.Comment: 11 pages, 2 Postscript figures, Submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
Evidence for Distinct Components of the Galactic Stellar Halo from 838 RR Lyrae Stars Discovered in the LONEOS-I Survey
We present 838 ab-type RR Lyrae stars from the Lowell Observatory Near Earth
Objects Survey Phase I (LONEOS-I). These objects cover 1430 deg^2 and span
distances ranging from 3-30 kpc from the Galactic Center. Object selection is
based on phased, photometric data with 28-50 epochs. We use this large sample
to explore the bulk properties of the stellar halo, including the spatial
distribution. The period-amplitude distribution of this sample shows that the
majority of these RR Lyrae stars resemble Oosterhoff type I, but there is a
significant fraction (26 %) which have longer periods and appear to be
Oosterhoff type II. We find that the radial distributions of these two
populations have significantly different profiles (rho_{OoI} ~ R^(-2.26 +-
0.07) and rho_{OoII} ~ R^(-2.88 +- 0.11). This suggests that the stellar halo
was formed by at least two distinct accretion processes and supports dual-halo
models.Comment: 18 pages, 28 figures, apjemulated, minor corrections and

Bayes-optimal inverse halftoning and statistical mechanics of the Q-Ising model
On the basis of statistical mechanics of the Q-Ising model, we formulate the
Bayesian inference to the problem of inverse halftoning, which is the inverse
process of representing gray-scales in images by means of black and white dots.
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate statistical properties of the
inverse process, especially, we reveal the condition of the Bayes-optimal
solution for which the mean-square error takes its minimum. The numerical
result is qualitatively confirmed by analysis of the infinite-range model. As
demonstrations of our approach, we apply the method to retrieve a grayscale
image, such as standard image `Lenna', from the halftoned version. We find that
the Bayes-optimal solution gives a fine restored grayscale image which is very
close to the original.Comment: 13pages, 12figures, using elsart.cl
First Measurements with NeXtRAD, a Polarimetric X/L Band Radar Network
NeXtRAD is a fully polarimetric, X/L Band radar network. It is a development of the older NetRAD system and builds on the experience gained with extensive deployments of NetRAD for sea clutter and target measurements. In this paper we will report on the first measurements with NeXtRAD, looking primarily at sea clutter and some targets, as well as early attempts at calibration using corner reflectors, and an assessment of the polarimetric response of the system. We also highlight innovations allowing for efficient data manipulation post measurement campaigns, as well as the plans for the coming years with this system
