    Bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS) is a rare congenital foregut anomaly of the lung, consisting of nonfunctioning primitive tissue that does not communicate with the healthy tracheobronchial tree. The abnormal segment has its own anomalous systemic blood supply, and typically drains into the pulmonary venous system. It is frequently asymptomatic and may be discovered incidentally. Symptoms may vary, with patients presenting with vague symptoms related to chronic respiratory infection. Early diagnosis and intervention decreases morbidity and mortality. We present a case of intralobar pulmonary sequestration involving the right lower lobe in a male child.peer-reviewe

    Geomorphology of the north-eastern coast of Gozo (Malta, Mediterranean Sea)

    The paper presents a geomorphological map of the north-eastern coast of the Island of Gozo (Malta) integrating inland and offshore areas at the scale 1:15,000. The map derives from the integration of different methods, such as aerial photo interpretation, field surveys and analysis of seafloor bathymetry. The landforms identified on land were shaped by coastal, fluvial, karst and gravity-induced processes, and some of them prolong on the seafloor. Most of the submerged landforms appear to have been modelled in subaerial conditions during sea-level lowstands, having been sealed by the rising sea in post-glacial times.     Natural and technological hazards cause great human and economic losses. Furthermore, as happened with the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami in 2011, natural hazards can trigger technological accidents, introducing an additional negative effect on people and environment and requiring a more comprehensive risk assessment and emergency planning. If we cannot prevent many of these hazards, we can try to minimize their potential consequences, in particular by informing people about the nature of hazard and its possible consequences for specific regions. General public behavior is an important factor in the success of any planning and providing it with clear explanations of all pertinent aspect of hazards is a prerequisite to foster a culture of safety supporting the necessary preventive actions.The BeSafeNet initiative, promoted by the EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement of the Council of Europe, has as a main aim, to better protect people from hazards through better informing them on the causes and the consequences of natural and technological hazards. Distributing widely such knowledge will help people to better understand the potential risks and consequently to better protect themselves against them

    We use Bott periodicity to relate previously defined quantum classes to certain "exotic Chern classes" on BUBU. This provides an interesting computational and theoretical framework for some Gromov-Witten invariants connected with cohomological field theories. This framework has applications to study of higher dimensional, Hamiltonian rigidity aspects of Hofer geometry of CPn \mathbb{CP} ^{n}, one of which we discuss here.Comment: prepublication versio

    Political risk in light rail transit PPP projects

    Since 2003 public-private partnerships (PPPs) have represented between 10 and 13.5% of the total investment in public services in the UK. The macro-economic and political benefits of PPPs were among the key drivers for central government's decision to promote this form of procurement to improve UK public services. Political support for a PPP project is critical and is frequently cited as the most important critical success factor. This paper investigates the significance of political support and reviews the treatment of political risk in a business case by the public sector project sponsor for major UK-based light rail transit PPP projects during their development stage. The investigation demonstrates that in the early project stages it is not traditional quantitative Monte Carlo risk analysis that is important; rather it is the identification and representation of political support within a business case together with an understanding of how this information is then used to inform critical project decisions

    Wavelength-Gated Photochemical Synthesis of Phenalene Diimides

    Herein, we pioneer a wavelength‐gated synthesis route to phenalene diimides. Consecutive Diels–Alder reactions of methylisophthalaldehydes and maleimides afford hexahydro‐phenalene‐1,6‐diol diimides via 5‐formyl‐hexahydro‐benzo[f]isoindoles as the intermediate. Both photoreactions are efficient (82–99 % yield) and exhibit excellent diastereoselectivity (62–98 % d.r.). The wavelength‐gated nature of the stepwise reaction enables the modular construction of phenalene diimide scaffolds by choice of substrate and wavelength. Importantly, this synthetic methodology opens a facile avenue to a new class of persistent phenalenyl diimide neutral radicals, constituting a versatile route to spin‐active molecules

    Algebraic bright and vortex solitons in defocusing media

    We demonstrate that spatially inhomogeneous defocusing nonlinear landscapes with the nonlinearity coefficient growing toward the periphery as [1+abs(r)]**a support one- and two-dimensional fundamental and higher-order bright solitons, as well as vortex solitons, with algebraically decaying tails. The energy flow of the solitons converges as long as nonlinearity growth rate exceeds the dimensionality, i.e., a>D. Fundamental solitons are always stable, while multipoles and vortices are stable if the nonlinearity growth rate is large enough.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

    Evaluation of different methods of determining the angle of attack on wind turbine blades under yawed inflow conditions

    As part of the AVATAR and Mexnext projects, this study compares several methods used to derive lifting line variables from CFD simulations of the MEXICO rotor in yawed inflow. The results from six partners within the AVATAR/Mexnext consortium using five different methods of extraction were compared. Overall comparison of the induced velocities at the mid and tip parts of blade shows fairly good agreement between the tested methods, where the derived angle of attack differs within 1°, within the linear range this accounts to ˂ 10% uncertainty on the aerodynamic forces.
