Prediction of peptides binding to MHC class I alleles by partial periodic pattern mining

    Get PDF
MHC (Major Histocompatibility Complex) is a key player in the immune response of an organism. It is important to be able to predict which antigenic peptides will bind to a specific MHC allele and which will not, creating possibilities for controlling immune response and for the applications of immunotherapy. However, a problem for MHC class I is the presence of bulges and loops in the peptides, changing the total length. Most machine learning methods in use today require the sequences to be of same length to successfully mine the binding motifs. We propose the use of time-based data mining methods in motif mining to be able to mine motifs position-independently. Also, the information for both binding and non-binding peptides is used on the contrary to the other methods which only rely on binding peptides. The prediction results are between 60-95% for the tested alleles

This study sought to examine Turkish first-time supervisees’ opinions regarding disclosure and nondisclosure in clinical supervision via a case study design. The data was collected from 19 volunteer first-time supervisees through a semi-structured interview form and analyzed with content analysis. Results indicated that supervisees’ content of disclosures included supervisory needs and thoughts about supervisor while content of nondisclosure consisted of personal issues, supervision-related issues, and negative feelings about client. Nevertheless, supervisee disclosure was positively influenced by supervisor’s personal characteristics and interventions; supervisee’s expectations from disclosure and personal characteristics, as well as existence of peers in supervision environment and strong supervisory relationship. However, supervisor’s personal characteristics; supervisee’s personal characteristics, negative attitudes toward disclosure, and supervision; and also peers, poor supervision time, poor structure for supervision, evaluation concerns, and weak supervisory relationship have some negative effects on supervisee disclosure. Moreover, supervisee disclosure and nondisclosure had intense effects on supervisee and supervision.

A paradox of international (non)recognition: The relationship between de facto states and patron states

    Get PDF
International system has been witnessing some jeopolitical mobilization after the second half of 20. century. These mobilities resulted in several conflicts which demand secession from their parent state. The conflicts which are caused by secessionist movements usually end with unilaterally secessions and these entities establish their own state without consent of parent state. After decolonization era, these secessionist movements are regarded as illegal by international community because they are not as part of decolonization movements. So these entities remain as unrecognized, in other words, de facto states. The violation of territorial integrity principle and threat to international peace and stability are main reasons that these states are regarded as illegal. But de facto states can’t achieve their statehood without a support from external sources. While external sources, in other words patron states support de facto states from several aspects, they also have a control on these entities. De facto states which are not recognized by international community also exprerience isolation politics. These isolationism make de facto state dependent on patron state’s support. But these dependences take de facto states away from international recognition. So in this study, it is aimed to analyze the relationship between de facto states and patron states and how this relationship evolves around a vicious circle

Turkey has many historical and cultural riches beloging to Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as "Gobeklitepe", the oldest religious center of the world 11,500 years ago. There are many places in Turkey that are mentioned in the Bible. The most mysterious of these places are the Seven Churches (Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea). Today it is observed that there is an current demand especially by Christianity groups who came from Europe, America and the other countries for Seven Churches. The aim of this study is to evaluate the route of Seven Churches in religious tourism in Turkey. In this study, a 6-step content analysis model was used. There are 24 travel agencies that organize The Tour of Seven Churches in Turkey. However, there are no logos, emblems and motto of the Seven Churches. In the study present implications to distinguish, promote and contribute to the creation of an effective image of the Seven Churches from other cultural assets in Turkey

Axial magnetic field sensing for pulsed magnetic flux leakage hairline crack detection and quantification

    Get PDF
The Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) testing method is a well-established branch of electromagnetic non-destructive testing technology extensively used to observe, analyze and estimate the level of imperfections (cracks, corrosions, pits, dents, etc.) affecting the quality of ferromagnetic steel structures. However the conventional MFL (DCMFL) method are not capable of estimating the defect sizes and orientation, hence an additional transducer is required to provide the extra information needed. This paper takes the detection and quantification of tangentially oriented rectangular surface and far-surface hairline cracks as the research objective. It uses an optimized pulsed magnetic flux leakage probe system to establish the location and geometries of such cracks. The results gathered from the approach show that data using the axial (Bx) field component can provide detailed locational information about hairline cracks especially the shape, size and orientation when positioned perpendicular to the applied field

Self-Compassion Moderates the Mediating Effect of Self-Criticism in the Link Between Childhood Maltreatment and Psychopathology

Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been associated with psychological symptoms (i.e., psychopathology) among clinical and nonclinical samples. The mechanisms underlying this link have been understudied, especially among well-functioning adults. Arguably, exposure to CM may be translated into negative and critical self-appraisals and self-blame, reflected in high self-criticism. CM may also result in difficulty in extending kindness towards oneself, that is, low self-compassion. These characteristics are linked with elevated psychopathology. Nevertheless, no study has yet tested the extent to which self-criticism and self-compassion may serve as independent mechanisms linking CM and psychopathology and whether in this context self-compassion buffers the link between self-criticism and psychopathology. Here, we tested an integrative model in which the relation between CM and psychopathology was mediated by self-compassion and self-criticism, and the path between self-criticism and psychopathology was moderated by self-compassion. A convenience sample of 914 individuals completed online self-report questionnaires. Results indicated that CM was related to psychopathology through the mediation of self-compassion and self-criticism, with a significant interaction between self-criticism and self-compassion. Showing a moderated-mediational effect, the link between self-criticism and psychopathology was weaker under high than under low levels of self-compassion. Our findings highlight the importance of self-compassion, a robust resilience factor related to reduced psychopathology and moderating the link between self-criticism, a potent transdiagnostic risk factor, and psychopathology in the context of CM. These results thus provide empirical evidence for the relevance of compassion and mindfulness in counseling settings, particularly with CM survivors, who are at greater risk for psychopathology

The demand for accurate angle measurements in a form that is robust and small is high, due to the advances in virtual reality applications, primarily the virtual reality headsets. The peripheral devices are required to completely immerse the user in a virtual reality setting, and for this purpose, a robust sensor has been developed. The angle measurements can also be used in motion sensing applications for medical purposes, allowing monitoring of a patient’s condition. This paper presents the development of a planar figure-of-eight coil sensor, which has been designed for the purpose of curvature sensing. The copper-plated polyimide material, FR4 FLEX, was used for the fabrication of the planar figure-of-eight coil. A curvature sensor was designed and consists of the figure-of-eight coil along with the magnetostrictive material Metglas 2605SA1. The sensor was incorporated in an oscillator circuit, where curvature-induced stress within the material changes the amplitude and the frequency of the output signal of the circuit

An optical sensor for tracking hand articulations

Recognizing and tracking articulations of the human hand is key to the development of areas such as robotics, virtual reality systems and physical rehabilitation. Based on the principle of crossed-polarization detection, a novel optical sensor with a hinge configuration, is proposed to monitor finger articulation. Using 3D printing technology, we fabricated a lightweight and compact sensor suited to attaching on fingers. The weighted average method was applied to the sensor's output data to determine angular positions corresponding to finger joint articulations. The experimental results show excellent consistency with theoretical predictions. The sensor features good accuracy (±0.5% of full scale) and repeatability, improved sensitivity, and an improved measuring range of 180°. The performance of the sensor is a promising development for monitoring finger articulation. Future work will focus on integrating multiple sensors as part of an instrumented glove to evaluate the true potential for monitoring hand articulation

Non-invasive measurement of stress levels in knee implants using a magnetic-based detection method

    Get PDF
A knee replacement surgery (arthroplasty) has become prevalent worldwide and has a high success rate over the short to medium term. In some cases, especially over the longer term, implant degradation can develop due to the deterioration of the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) tibial insert. Unfortunately, there are no satisfactory techniques currently available for assessing implant integrity and predicting failure. This paper describes a possible solution to this problem by using a non-invasive, electromagnetic method for monitoring implant integrity. This approach utilizes the magnetoelastic property of amorphous ribbon, which when stressed causes an inductance change in a nearby magnetizing winding. Amorphous ribbons encased in UHMWPE disks, to simulate a knee insert, were subjected to varying tensile stresses under an applied ac magnetic field. A correlation between total circuit impedance and applied stress was observed. The results obtained demonstrate that the proposed sensor has sufficient sensitivity for measuring typical stress levels associated with the axial forces in tibial inserts
