    The 2008–2010 subsidence of dallol volcano on the spreading erta ale ridge: Insar observations and source models

    In this work, we study the subsidence of Dallol, an explosive crater and hydrothermal area along the spreading Erta Ale ridge of Afar (Ethiopia). No volcanic products exist at the surface. However, a diking episode in 2004, accompanied by dike-induced faulting, indicates that Dallol is an active volcanic area. The 2004 diking episode was followed by quiescence until subsidence started in 2008. We use InSAR to measure the deformation, and inverse, thermoelastic and poroe-lastic modelling to understand the possible causes of the subsidence. Analysis of InSAR data from 2004–2010 shows that subsidence, centered at Dallol, initiated in October 2008, and continued at least until February 2010 at an approximately regular rate of up to 10 cm/year. The inversion of InSAR average velocities finds that the source causing the subsidence is shallow (depth between 0.5 and 1.5 km), located under Dallol and with a volume decrease between −0.63 and −0.26 × 106 km3/year. The most likely explanation for the subsidence of Dallol volcano is a combination of out-gassing (depressurization), cooling and contraction of the roof of a shallow crustal magma chamber or of the hydrothermal system

    Objectives A previous individual participant data meta-analysis (IPDMA) identified differences in major depression classification rates between different diagnostic interviews, controlling for depressive symptoms on the basis of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. We aimed to determine whether similar results would be seen in a different population, using studies that administered the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) in pregnancy or postpartum. Methods Data accrued for an EPDS diagnostic accuracy IPDMA were analysed. Binomial generalised linear mixed models were fit to compare depression classification odds for the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM (SCID), controlling for EPDS scores and participant characteristics. Results Among fully structured interviews, the MINI (15 studies, 2,532 participants, 342 major depression cases) classified depression more often than the CIDI (3 studies, 2,948 participants, 194 major depression cases; adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.72, 95% confidence interval [CI] [1.21, 11.43]). Compared with the semistructured SCID (28 studies, 7,403 participants, 1,027 major depression cases), odds with the CIDI (interaction aOR = 0.88, 95% CI [0.85, 0.92]) and MINI (interaction aOR = 0.95, 95% CI [0.92, 0.99]) increased less as EPDS scores increased.     Subsidence at Dallol proto-volcano, Afar (Ethiopia): cooling of the magma chamber or deep interconnection?

    In this work we study the crustal deformation at Dallol proto-volcano, the seventh volcanic centre of the Erta Ale range (Northern Afar, Ethiopia), employing InSAR data acquired by the ENVISAT and Sentinel-1 satellites between 2005 - 2015. This was done to continue to monitor the long term at Dallol after the dike intrusion event in October 2004. The intrusion was fed by a magma chamber under at 2.4 Km depth. After this event no significant deformation has been detected at Dallol. We analyzed SAR images acquired by ENVISAT between January 2005 and February 2010. We also processed a time series of SAR images acquired by SENTINEL-1 satellite for the period ranging from March 2015 to December 2015. The ENVISAT data show a circular deformation pattern around Dallol volcano from October 2008 to February 2010. Sentinel data show the same deformation trend from March 2015 to December 2015. This deformation pattern is a clear increase in the line-of-sight distance (LOS) from the sensor to the target, defining a long term subsidence pattern at Dallol. The results of the inversion of InSAR measurements show that, for the ENVISAT acquisition, the sill source is the best fitting source geometry to explain the Dallol subsidence deformation.     Differences in MMPI-2 personality profiles among filicide and homicide women

    Introduction. Filicide is an act of terrible violence that generates dismay and astonishment and invites everybody to ask: why? Aim. As the transition to motherhood is a critical period for any woman, requiring the activation of deep personality resources, the aim of this study was to deepen our knowledge of the personality profiles of new mothers by comparing a sample of 16 women who had killed their own child (“filicide mothers”) with women who had murdered someone outside of their family (“non-family homicide women”). Method. All of the women had a similar psychiatric diagnosis, as assessed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I). All were assessed by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 2 (MMPI-2) 2 to 4 years after the court’s judgment. A Kruskal-Wallis test and two-step cluster analysis were performed to determine whether a specific personality profile could distinguish filicide mothers from non-family homicide women. Results. Years after the act, few filicide mothers showed symptoms of psychopathology; rather, they appeared functional and untroubled. In contrast, non-family homicide women showed a pathological mean profile. Conclusions. The results may indicate conscious attempts made by filicide mothers to avoid negative evaluations, minimize symptoms, and deny psychological suffering. These may indicate personality risk factors that could help clinicians recognize and intervene in cases where a woman presents a severe mental illness before, during, and following the birth of her child
