    Comparison of Two Paradigms Based on Stimulation with Images in a Spelling Brain–Computer Interface

    A P300-based speller can be used to control a home automation system via brain activity. Evaluation of the visual stimuli used in a P300-based speller is a common topic in the field of brain–computer interfaces (BCIs). The aim of the present work is to compare, using the usability approach, two types of stimuli that have provided high performance in previous studies. Twelve participants controlled a BCI under two conditions, which varied in terms of the type of stimulus employed: a red famous face surrounded by a white rectangle (RFW) and a range of neutral pictures (NPs). The usability approach included variables related to effectiveness (accuracy and information transfer rate), efficiency (stress and fatigue), and satisfaction (pleasantness and System Usability Scale and Affect Grid questionnaires). The results indicated that there were no significant differences in effectiveness, but the system that used NPs was reported as significantly more pleasant.     Continuous reactive-roll-to-roll growth of carbon nanotubes for fog water harvesting applications

    ABSTRACT: A simple method is presented for the continuous generation of carbon nanotube forests stably anchored on stainless-steel surfaces using a reactive-roll-to-roll (RR2R) configuration. No addition of catalyst nanoparticles is required for the CNT-forest generation; the stainless-steel substrate itself is tuned to generate the catalytic growth sites. The process enables very large surfaces covered with CNT forests to have individual CNT roots anchored to the metallic ground through primary bonds. Fog water harvesting is demonstrated and tested as one potential application using long CNT-covered wires. The RR2R is performed in the gas phase; no solution processing of CNT suspensions is used, contrary to usual R2R CNT-based technologies. Full or partial CNT-forest coverage provides tuning of the ratio and shape of hydrophobic and hydrophilic zones on the surface. This enables the optimization of fog water harvesters for droplet capture through the hydrophobic CNT forest and water removal from the hydrophilic SS surface. Water recovery tests using small harp-type harvesters with CNT-forest generate water capture of up to 2.2 g/cm2·h under ultrasound-generated fog flow. The strong CNT root anchoring on the stainless-steel surfaces provides opportunities for (i) robustness and easy transport of the composite structure and (ii) chemical functionalization and/or nanoparticle decoration of the structures, and it opens the road for a series of applications on large-scale surfaces, including fog harvesting

    DBT-enhanced cognitive-behavioral treatment for trichotillomania: A randomized controlled trial

    Background and aims: Limited treatment options are available for trichotillomania (TTM) and most have modest outcomes. Suboptimal treatment results may be due to the failure of existing approaches to address all TTM styles. Methods: Thirty-eight DSM-IV TTM participants were randomly assigned across two study sites to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) -enhanced cognitive-behavioral treatment (consisting of an 11-week acute treatment and 3-month maintenance treatment) or a minimal attention control (MAC) condition. MAC participants had active treatment after the 11-week control condition. Follow-up study assessments were conducted three and six months after the maintenance period. Results: Open trial treatment resulted in significant improvement in TTM severity, emotion regulation (ER) capacity, experiential avoidance, anxiety and depression with changes generally maintained over time. In the randomized controlled trial, those with active treatment had greater improvement than those in the MAC condition for both TTM severity and ER capacity. Correlations between changes in TTM severity and ER capacity were not reported at post-treatment but did occur in maintenance and follow-up indicating reduced TTM severity with improved ER capacity. Conclusions: DBT-enhanced cognitive-behavioral treatment is a promising treatment for TTM. Future studies should compare this approach to other credible treatment interventions and investigate the efficacy of this approach in more naturalistic samples with greater comorbidity

    The Fetal Hypothalamus Has the Potential to Generate Cells with a Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Phenotype

    Neurospheres (NS) are colonies of neural stem and precursor cells capable of differentiating into the central nervous system (CNS) cell lineages upon appropriate culture conditions: neurons, and glial cells. NS were originally derived from the embryonic and adult mouse striatum subventricular zone. More recently, experimental evidence substantiated the isolation of NS from almost any region of the CNS, including the hypothalamus. Here we report a protocol that enables to generate large quantities of NS from both fetal and adult rat hypothalami. We found that either FGF-2 or EGF were capable of inducing NS formation from fetal hypothalamic cultures, but that only FGF-2 is effective in the adult cultures. The hypothalamic-derived NS are capable of differentiating into neurons and glial cells and most notably, as demonstrated by immunocytochemical detection with a specific anti-GnRH antibody, the fetal cultures contain cells that exhibit a GnRH phenotype upon differentiation. This in vitro model should be useful to study the molecular mechanisms involved in GnRH neuronal differentiation

    The North American tree-ring fire-scar network

    Fire regimes in North American forests are diverse and modern fire records are often too short to capture important patterns, trends, feedbacks, and drivers of variability. Tree-ring fire scars provide valuable perspectives on fire regimes, including centuries-long records of fire year, season, frequency, severity, and size. Here, we introduce the newly compiled North American tree-ring fire-scar network (NAFSN), which contains 2562 sites, >37,000 fire-scarred trees, and covers large parts of North America. We investigate the NAFSN in terms of geography, sample depth, vegetation, topography, climate, and human land use. Fire scars are found in most ecoregions, from boreal forests in northern Alaska and Canada to subtropical forests in southern Florida and Mexico. The network includes 91 tree species, but is dominated by gymnosperms in the genus Pinus. Fire scars are found from sea level to >4000-m elevation and across a range of topographic settings that vary by ecoregion. Multiple regions are densely sampled (e.g., >1000 fire-scarred trees), enabling new spatial analyses such as reconstructions of area burned. To demonstrate the potential of the network, we compared the climate space of the NAFSN to those of modern fires and forests; the NAFSN spans a climate space largely representative of the forested areas in North America, with notable gaps in warmer tropical climates. Modern fires are burning in similar climate spaces as historical fires, but disproportionately in warmer regions compared to the historical record, possibly related to under-sampling of warm subtropical forests or supporting observations of changing fire regimes. The historical influence of Indigenous and non-Indigenous human land use on fire regimes varies in space and time. A 20th century fire deficit associated with human activities is evident in many regions, yet fire regimes characterized by frequent surface fires are still active in some areas (e.g., Mexico and the southeastern United States). These analyses provide a foundation and framework for future studies using the hundreds of thousands of annually- to sub-annually-resolved tree-ring records of fire spanning centuries, which will further advance our understanding of the interactions among fire, climate, topography, vegetation, and humans across North America

    ProblĂ©matique et objectif La pratique du Chemsex concerne un homme ayant des relations sexuelles avec des hommes (HSH) sur 10 (Jauffret-Roustide et al., 2019). A ce jour, plusieurs Ă©tudes ont analysĂ© les liens entre certaines dimensions du parcours de vie des HSH et la consommation de drogues rĂ©crĂ©atives en contexte sexuel (Chemsex). L’objectif de ce travail est d’illustrer les parcours de vie de quatre HSH et de mettre en avant les similitudes et les diffĂ©rences que l’on peut y retrouver. MĂ©thodologie Un groupe de parole a Ă©tĂ© menĂ© sur quatre sĂ©ances auprĂšs de quatre HSH, pratiquant ou ayant pratiquĂ© le Chemsex au cours de leur vie, ĂągĂ©s de plus de 18 ans. Une analyse qualitative thĂ©matique de contenu a Ă©tĂ© effectuĂ©e. RĂ©sultats Plusieurs similitudes dans les parcours de vie des participants de l’étude ont pu ĂȘtre mises en Ă©vidence. Des carences affectives durant l’enfance, une Ă©ducation stricte de la part des parents, une nature anxieuse, une mauvaise gestion des Ă©motions et une dĂ©pendance affective peuvent, entre autres, ĂȘtre associĂ©s Ă  la pratique du Chemsex dans notre Ă©chantillon. Par ailleurs, des diffĂ©rences ont Ă©galement Ă©tĂ© perçues, comme le diagnostic TDAH ou le harcĂšlement scolaire, qui peuvent toutefois alerter quant Ă  l’orientation vers une pratique telle que le Chemsex. Discussion Les rĂ©sultats montrent l’importance de la place des Ă©motions pendant l’enfance, la nĂ©cessitĂ© de les apprendre Ă  ses enfants, afin qu’ils sachent les reconnaitre et les gĂ©rer.
