    The aim of present study was to investigate the occurence of different lymphocyte subsets in the endometrium of endometriosis patients and in healthy women on every day of the menstrual cycle with special emphasis to the proliferative activity of endometrial cells with Ki-S3 antibody. We also conducted immunohistochemical studies of T-lymphocytes, B-lympho-cytes, macrophages, natural-killer-cells and also of antigens class II of the histocompatibility complex (HLA-DR) during the different phases of the menstrual cycle in endometriosis and non-endometriosis patients

    Charges of twisted branes: the exceptional cases

    The charges of the twisted D-branes for the two exceptional cases (SO(8) with the triality automorphism and E_6 with charge conjugation) are determined. To this end the corresponding NIM-reps are expressed in terms of the fusion rules of the invariant subalgebras. As expected the charge groups are found to agree with those characterising the untwisted branes.Comment: 15 page

    Sorption and catalytic oxidation of Fe(II) at the surface of calcite

    The effect of sorption and coprecipitation of Fe(II) with calcite on the kinetics of Fe(II) oxidation was investigated. The interaction of Fe(II) with calcite was studied experimentally in the absence and presence of oxygen. The sorption of Fe(II) on calcite occurred in two distinguishable steps: (a) a rapid adsorption step (seconds–minutes) was followed by (b) a slower incorporation (hours–weeks). The incorporated Fe(II) could not be remobilized by a strong complexing agent (phenanthroline or ferrozine) but the dissolution of the outmost calcite layers with carbonic acid allowed its recovery. Based on results of the latter dissolution experiments, a stoichiometry of 0.4 mol% Fe:Ca and a mixed carbonate layer thickness of 25 nm (after 168 h equilibration) were estimated. Fe(II) sorption on calcite could be successfully described by a surface adsorption and precipitation model (Comans & Middelburg, GCA51 (1987), 2587) and surface complexation modeling (Van Cappellen et al., GCA57 (1993), 3505; Pokrovsky et al., Langmuir16 (2000), 2677). The surface complex model required the consideration of two adsorbed Fe(II) surface species, >CO3Fe+ and >CO3FeCO3H0. For the formation of the latter species, a stability constant is being suggested. The oxidation kinetics of Fe(II) in the presence of calcite depended on the equilibration time of aqueous Fe(II) with the mineral prior to the introduction of oxygen. If pre-equilibrated for >15 h, the oxidation kinetics was comparable to a calcite-free system (t1/2 = 145 ± 15 min). Conversely, if Fe(II) was added to an aerated calcite suspension, the rate of oxidation was higher than in the absence of calcite (t1/2 = 41 ± 1 min and t1/2 = 100 ± 15 min, respectively). This catalysis was due to the greater reactivity of the adsorbed Fe(II) species, >CO3FeCO3H0, for which the species specific rate constant was estimated

    Adhesion formation after intracapsular myomectomy with or without adhesion barrier.

    Objective: To show the prevention of adhesion formation by placing an absorbable adhesion barrier after intracapsular myomectomy. Design: Prospective blinded observational study. Setting: University-affiliated Hospitals. Patient(s): Patients R18 years old with single or multiple uterine fibroids removed by laparoscopic or abdominal intracapsular myomectomy. Intervention(s): A total of 694 women undergoing laparoscopic or abdominal myomectomy were randomized for placement of oxidized regenerated cellulose absorbable adhesion barrier to the uterine incision or for control subjects without barriers. The presence of adhesions was assessed in 546 patients who underwent subsequent surgery. MainOutcomeMeasure(s): Theprimaryandsecondaryoutcomesoftheanalysiswerethepresenceandseverityof adhesions for four groups: laparotomy with barrier, laparotomy without barrier, laparoscopy with barrier, and laparoscopy without barrier. Result(s): Therewasahigherrateofadhesionsinlaparotomywithoutbarrier(28.1%)comparedwithlaparoscopy with no barrier (22.6%), followed by laparotomy with barrier (22%) and laparoscopy with barrier (15.9%). Additionally, the type of adhesions were different, filmy and organized were predominant with an adhesion barrier, and cohesive adhesions were more common without an adhesion barrier. Conclusion(s): Oxidized regenerated cellulose reduces postsurgical adhesions. Cohesive adhesions reduction was noted in laparoscopy

    The "Multimat" experiment at CERN HiRadMat facility: advanced testing of novel materials and instrumentation for HL-LHC collimators

    The increase of the stored beam energy in future particle accelerators, such as the HL-LHC and the FCC, calls for a radical upgrade in the design, materials and instrumentation of Beam Intercepting Devices (BID), such as collimators Following successful tests in 2015 that validated new composite materials and a novel jaw design conceived for the HL-LHC collimators, a new HiRadMat experiment, named “HRMT36-MultiMat”, is scheduled for autumn 2017. Its objective is to determine the behaviour under high intensity proton beams of a broad range of materials relevant for collimators and beam intercepting devices, thin-film coatings and advanced equipment. The test bench features 16 separate target stations, each hosting various specimens, allowing the exploration of complex phenomena such as dynamic strength, internal damping, nonlinearities due to anisotropic inelasticity and inhomogeneity, effects of energy deposition and radiation on coatings. This paper details the main technical solutions and engineering calculations for the design of the test bench and of the specimens, the candidate target materials and the instrumentation system

    Evaluation of rK39 rapid diagnostic tests for canine visceral leishmaniasis : longitudinal study and meta-analysis

    Canine visceral leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease caused by the intracellular parasite Leishmania infantum. It is an important veterinary disease, and dogs are also the main animal reservoir for human infection. The disease is widespread in the Mediterranean area, and parts of Asia and South and Central America, and is potentially fatal in both dogs and humans unless treated. Diagnosis of canine infections requires serological or molecular tests. Detection of infection in dogs is important prior to treatment, and in epidemiological studies and control programmes, and a sensitive and specific rapid diagnostic test would be very useful. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have been developed, but their diagnostic performance has been reported to be variable. We evaluated the sensitivity of a RDT based on serological detection of the rK39 antigen in a cohort of naturally infected Brazilian dogs. The sensitivity of the test to detect infection was relatively low, but increased with time since infection and the severity of infection. We then carried out a meta-analysis of published studies of rK39 RDTs, evaluating the sensitivity to detect disease and infection. The results suggest that rK39 RDTs may be useful in a veterinary clinical setting, but the sensitivity to detect infection is too low for operational control programmes

    Design and construction of the MicroBooNE Cosmic Ray Tagger system

    The MicroBooNE detector utilizes a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) with an 85 t active mass to study neutrino interactions along the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab. With a deployment location near ground level, the detector records many cosmic muon tracks in each beam-related detector trigger that can be misidentified as signals of interest. To reduce these cosmogenic backgrounds, we have designed and constructed a TPC-external Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT). This sub-system was developed by the Laboratory for High Energy Physics (LHEP), Albert Einstein center for fundamental physics, University of Bern. The system utilizes plastic scintillation modules to provide precise time and position information for TPC-traversing particles. Successful matching of TPC tracks and CRT data will allow us to reduce cosmogenic background and better characterize the light collection system and LArTPC data using cosmic muons. In this paper we describe the design and installation of the MicroBooNE CRT system and provide an overview of a series of tests done to verify the proper operation of the system and its components during installation, commissioning, and physics data-taking
