Decline in the Use and Production of Red-Earthenware Cooking Vessels in the Northeast, 1780-1880

    Get PDF
Ceramic collections from archaeological sites dating to and before the early 19th century are often dominated by red-earthenware vessels used in the foodways complex. By the late 19th century, redware vessels are much less common in New England and the Middle Atlantic region. This decline in the use and production of red earthenwares has many causes, including decreased costs of alternative materials (stoneware, refined earthenware, metal, and glass) and an awareness of the harmful effects of lead glazes, but the most important factor is the change in food-preparation technology from open-hearth to stove cooking

This opinion piece is a brief discussion of documentary and graphic sources, such as cookbooks, works of fiction, advertisements, and genre paintings, available to archaeologists for use in interpreting food-related artifacts and faunal materials from 19th-century domestic deposits. At that time American society experienced a surge in print and visual media that shaped the consumption and preparation of new foods. The scale of influence a particular form of media has on consumers varies in relation to the time sensitivity of the media. This article considers the range of sources that exist and suggest a comprehensive approach to the analysis of archaeological assemblages that includes potential short- and long-term media influences on consumers

Gill net is a fishing gear set vertically underwater to ambushed off the fish swimming direction. The fish are caught by means of gill trapped or body entangled. One of the gill fishing ground is in Malalayang Dua, Manado. This study was aims to knowing the species composition of bottom gill net with mesh size of 3 inches, 3½ inches, and 4 inches, comparing the catch number and individual size caught in different mesh size, and knowing how they were caught. The study used a descriptive method based on a case study. Results showed that the catches were dominted by parrotfish (Scarus sp.), 26 individuals, followed by surgeonfish (Achanthurus pyroferus), 21 individuals, butterflyfish (Zanclus cornutus), 8 individuals, and other species, less than 5 individuals. The fish caught in the mesh size of 3 inches were 60 individuals, 3½ inches were 29 individuals, 4 inches were 2 individuals. The parrotfish were dominantly caught in the mesh size of 3 inches, 17 individuals, tangs in 3 inches, 13 individuals, and the butterflyfish in 3 inches, 7 individuals. The heaviest fish caught in the mesh size of 3½ inches was 2.74 kg for parrotfish, 1.55 kg for surgeonfish and 5.1 kg for goatfish. Keywords: bottom gill net, catch composition, size, number of catches.

Advances in information technology and communications which we achieve now actually been recognized and felt in the world of education in general. Currently College Prog implement a Tridharma terms Tridharma iDuHelp!. Tridharma is one of the basic responsibilities that students must be developed simultaneously and together. In this Tridharma still there are problems in the system iDuHelp! service. So IRAN (iLearning Prog Ask and News) in collaboration with iDuHelp! in providing answers and information needed by the student. In its application in Tridharma iDuHelp! IRAN There is a related method in it, such as iLearning methods that are currently being developed. With iLearning method can facilitate conduct research in detail, accurately, and clearly by using mindmapping. Besides the method of analysis is also done with three stages  namely the identification of the problem, identifying needs, and identifying system requirements. In this study using 4 literature reviews that can be used as references in preparing this paper. In this article explained about the problems that arise and solving problems in accurately using the flow Flowchart. In the implementation of the prototype shown iDuHelp! As well as the performance of Iran. So the end result of the study is a system performance to information and communication media of Iran can maximize iDuHelp! care system  It is widely integrated in a university

This research is aimed at figuring out the role of learning activity using mathematical modelling in order to help pupils comprehend the linear programming. This research is conducted to the XI grade students of Xaverius 1 Palembang Senior High School. The learning implementation is conducted in XI Science class, which consists of 38 students. This research involves the mathematics teacher who acts as a model teacher to teach linear programming material. The method used in this research is the design research. The data are collected through video recording, taking picture during the learning process, students activity sheet, observation sheet, interview, and field notes during the learning process. The research result states that learning activity using mathematical modelling is benficial in providing the students opportunity to construct the linear programming knowledge by their own selves. Through independently thinking, students are given opportunity to express their idea about linear programming problem using mathematical modelling learning. Next, by asking the teacher, reading books, doing group discussion, and getting teacher’s reinforcement, the students are enable to enlarge the comprehension of linear programming

Ongoing archaeological excavation undertaken by URS/AECOM along the I-95 corridor in Kensington-Fishtown in Philadelphia have brought to light 18th and 19th century domestic and industrial life along a three-mile section of the Delaware River waterfront. Excavation has revealed over 400 shaft features, yard deposits, and industrial foundations yielding over one million artifacts from a three mile section of the Delaware River waterfront. A small quantity of domestic queensware has been recovered from barrel and wood-lined box privies and from an early 19th century drain feature. The recovery of domestic queensware in Kensington-Fishtown has revealed that this ware had become part of the domestic fabric of early 19th century consumers in this part of the city
