    Prediction of enteric methane production, yield and intensity of beef cattle using an intercontinental database

    Enteric methane (CH4) production attributable to beef cattle contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. Reliably estimating this contribution requires extensive CH4 emission data from beef cattle under different management conditions worldwide. The objectives were to: 1) predict CH4 production (g d¬-1 animal-1), yield [g (kg dry matter intake; DMI)-1] and intensity [g (kg average daily gain)-1] using an intercontinental database (data from Europe, North America, Brazil, Australia and South Korea); 2) assess the impact of geographic region, and of higher- and lower-forage diets. Linear models were developed by incrementally adding covariates. A K-fold cross-validation indicated that a CH4 production equation using only DMI that was fitted to all available data had a root mean square prediction error (RMSPE; % of observed mean) of 31.2%. Subsets containing data with ≥ 25% and ≤ 18% dietary forage contents had an RMSPE of 30.8 and 34.2%, with the all-data CH4 production equation, whereas these errors decreased to 29.3 and 28.4%, respectively, when using CH4 prediction equations fitted to these subsets. The RMSPE of the ≥ 25% forage subset further decreased to 24.7% when using multiple regression. Europe- and North America-specific subsets predicted by the best performing ≥ 25% forage multiple regression equation had RMSPE of 24.5 and 20.4%, whereas these errors were 24.5 and 20.0% with region-specific equations, respectively. The developed equations had less RMSPE than extant equations evaluated for all data (22.5 vs. 23.2%), for higher-forage (21.2 vs. 23.1%), but not for the lower-forage subsets (28.4 vs. 27.9%). Splitting the dataset by forage content did not improve CH4 yield or intensity predictions. Predicting beef cattle CH4 production using energy conversion factors, as applied by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, indicated that adequate forage content-based and region-specific energy conversion factors improve prediction accuracy and are preferred in national or global inventories

    This experiment aimed to evaluate nutrient intake, total and partial digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral (NDF) and acid (ADF) detergent fiber and ruminal parameters, ammonia concentration and volatile fatty acids, in beef cattle fed palisade grass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. marandu) at two regrowth ages, 30 and 60 days, at two times of year (January and February). The intake of DM, OM and CP was influenced by forage age of regrowth with high values for 30 days; this was influenced by time of year, being observed in February the higher intake by animals. DM digestibility average was 60.7 and 59.4% for 30 and 60 days of forage regrowth, respectively, however, was observed effect of interaction between regrowth and time of year, the same comportment was observed for OM, averages were 63.9 and 63% for respective ages of regrowth. CP digestibility was higher for 30 days, 70.8%, than for 60 days of regrowth, 57%. The NDF and ADF digestibilities were influenced by the interaction between regrowth and time of year; their average for 60 days of regrowth in January were respectively 54.8 and 48.5%, being the lower values and, in February, the higher values: 64.9 and 60.4%. The ruminal average digestibility was 79.5, 86.2, 99.4 and 96.7% of the total degradable for DM, OM, NDF and ADF, respectively. Effects of regrowth and time of year there were not recorded. Two hours after the morning meal was observed the ammonia ruminal concentration peak. The acetate:propionate: butirate ruminal ratio observed was 74:18:8(%).O consumo e digestibilidades total e parcial da matéria seca (MS), matéria orgânica (MO), proteí- na bruta (PB), fibras em detergente neutro (FDN) e ácido (FDA) e os parâmetros ruminais nitrogênio amoniacal e ácidos graxos de cadeia curta foram avaliados em bovinos de corte alimentados com Brachiaria brizantha cv. marandu aos 30 e 60 dias de rebrota em duas épocas do ano (janeiro e fevereiro). Os consumos de MS, MO e PB foram influenciados pela idade de rebrota da forrageira apresentando maiores valores aos 30 dias e também influenciados pela época do ano, sendo em fevereiro seu maior consumo pelos animais. A digestibilidade da MS foi em média 60,7 e 59,4% aos 30 e 60 dias de rebrota da forrageira, respec- tivamente, porém, demonstrou efeito de interação entre a idade de rebrota e a época do ano, mesmo comportamento observado para MO, com médias de 63,9 e 63% para as respectivas idades de rebrota. A digestibilidade da PB foi maior aos 30 dias de rebrota, média de 70,8%, que aos 60 dias, média de 57%. As digestibilidades da FDN e da FDA com efeito significativo para a interação entre a idade de rebrota e a época do ano, apresentaram aos 60 dias de rebrota na época de janeiro as menores médias, 54,8 e 48,5%, respectivamente e em fevereiro as maiores médias, 64,9 e 60,4%. A digestibilidade ruminal apresentou médias de 79,5, 86,2, 99,4 e 96,7% do total digerível para MS, MO, FDN e FDA, respectivamente, não sendo observados efeitos da idade de rebrota nem da época do ano. Após 2 horas da alimentação foi observado o pico de concentração de nitrogênio amoniacal no rúmen. A média da relação acetato:propionato:butirato observada foi 74:18:8(%)

    Reducing supplementation frequency for Nellore beef steers grazing tropical pastures

    Reduced supplementation frequency is a broadly applied management practice. Ruminants consuming low quality forages/pastures, supplemented less than once daily are able to maintain body weight gain (BWG), efficiency of use of dry matter, nitrogen and other nutrients, as compared with animals supplemented once daily. We evaluated the feeding behavior, dry matter intake (DMI), dry matter and organic matter digestibility (DMD and OMD), BWG, Longissimus muscle area and backfat depth of Nellore steers raised on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pastures during the dry season, with different supplementation patterns. Thirty six animals (338 ± 40.7 kg) were distributed over nine paddocks according to a completely randomized design. Treatments were based on supplementation frequency: once daily (OD), once daily except Saturdays and Sundays (SS), or on alternate days (AD), at 1.0 %, 1.4 % and 2.0 % BW, respectively. Average total DMI accounted for 1.6 % BW day–1, with no effect of supplementation frequency. Supplementation frequency had no effect on BWG or grazing time during the day. There was no difference in Longissimus muscle area animals supplemented daily, SS and AD. The backfat depth was thinner in animals supplemented AD, but even in this case, it was within the standards considered satisfactory for a finishing steer. Reducing supplementation frequency seems a good option to lower labor costs without affecting feed efficiency or carcass quality in beef cattle grazing tropical pastures

    Comparison of laboratory methods to assess fiber contents in feedstuffs

    Summary Background: the conventional method of fiber analysis using neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) was proposed by Peter Van Soest. The main advantage of this method is the precision of results; however, reagents are costly and laboratory work requires long runtime and labor. Objective: to compare analytical data from different methodologies used to assess NDF and ADF contents. Methods: means obtained with the conventional method were compared through Dunnett’s test (α=5%) with values from alternative methods using autoclave as the digester system. A completely randomized design in a 4 x 2 factorial arrangement was used. Results: NDF content through alternative methods was assessed for Tifton 85 hay, babassu meal and sugarcane, whereas ADF was only determined for babassu meal. NDF and ADF did not differ (p(0.05) between non-sequential or sequential analysis for all the feedstuffs and methods studied, except for ADF in corn silage. Conclusion: alternative methodologies allow reducing operating costs and time but lack uniformity and accuracy for analyzing ADF in corn silage.Resumo Antecedentes: as determinações dos teores de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e em fibra em detergente ácido (FDA) são de extrema importância na nutrição animal, tendo como método convencional de análise o proposto por Van Soest. Esse método apresenta como principal vantagem a precisão dos resultados, no entanto, a rotina laboratorial da sua execução demanda muito tempo por possuir etapas manuais, além do que é um método de custo elevado e que gera resíduos químicos em proporções consideráveis. Objetivo: avaliar diferentes metodologias propostas para análise da FDN e FDA, através da verificação dos dados analíticos. Métodos: as médias obtidas pelo método convencional foram comparadas com as médias de métodos alternativos que utilizam a autoclave como sistema digestor, pelo teste de Dunnette (α=5%). O delineamento adotado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em um esquema fatorial 4x2. Resultados: os métodos alternativos foram recomendados para determinação de FDN no feno de Tifton 85, farelo de babaçu e cana-de-açúcar, enquanto para as determinações dos teores de FDA, apenas no farelo de babaçu. A precisão observada nas análises dos teores de FDN e FDA não diferiram significativamente (p(0.05) quanto a análise não sequencial e sequencial, em todos os alimentos e métodos estudados, com exceção da determinação de FDA na silagem de milho. Conclusão: as metodologias alternativas permitiram ganhos significativos com a redução dos custos operacionais e do tempo da análise, mas sem uniformidade na precisão das análises desenvolvidas.Resumen Antecedentes: la determinación de los valores de fibra detergente neutra (FDN) y fibra detergente ácida (FDA) es de gran importancia en la nutrición animal, siendo el método tradicional de análisis el propuesto por Van Soest. Este método presenta como ventaja principal la precisión de los resultados, sin embargo la rutina de laboratorio en su ejecución implica mucho tiempo debido a sus etapas manuales, además de ser un método de alto costo que genera considerables proporciones de residuos químicos. Objetivo: evaluar diferentes metodologías propuestas para la análisis de las FDN y FDA mediante la medición de los datos analíticos. Métodos: las medias obtenidas por el método tradicional fueron comparadas con las medias de métodos alternativos que usan una autoclave como sistema digestor por el test de Dunnette (α=5%). Un diseño completamente aleatorio, en un diseño factorial 4x2 fue adoptado. Resultados: los métodos alternativos fueron recomendadas para las determinaciones de FDN por el heno de Tifton 85, salvado de harina de babasú y caña de azúcar, mientras que las determinaciones de los valores de FDA apenas para el salvado de harina de babasú. Los resultados de los análisis de FDN y FDA no fueron significativamente diferentes (p(0.05) entre los análisis no secuencial y secuencial, en todos los alimentos y métodos estudiados, a excepción de la determinación de FDA en el ensilaje de maíz. Conclusión: las metodologías alternativas permitieron ganancias significativas con la reducción de costos operacionales y del tiempo de análisis, pero sin uniformidad en la precisión de los análisis involucrados

    Characterization of ruminal bacteria in grazing Nellore steers

    Background: Rumen microorganisms have developed a series of complex interactions, representing one of the best examples of symbiosis between microorganisms in nature. Conventional taxonomic methods based on culture techniques are being replaced by molecular techniques that are faster and more accurate. Objective: To characterize rumen bacterial diversity of Nellore steers grazing on tropical pastures by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene using Illumina sequenctng. Methods: Three rumen-cannulated Nellore steers were used. The liquid and solid fractions of the rumen contents were processed to extract metagenomic DNA, and the VI and V2 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene were sequenced using Illumina sequencing. Results: A total of 11,407,000 reads of adequate quality were generated, and 812 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were found at the species level. Twenty-seven phyla were identified, and the predominant phyla were Firmicutes (23%), Bacteroidetes (14%), Proteobacteria (10%), Spirochaetes (9%), Fibrobacteres (7%), Tenericutes (5%), and Actinobacteria (2%), which represented 70% of the total phyla identified in the rumen content. Conclusion: Rumen environment in grazing Nellore steers showed high bacterial diversity, with Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Spirochaetes, and Fibrobacteres as the predominant phyla.Antecedentes: Os microrganismos ruminais têm desenvolvido uma serie de complexas interações que representam um dos melhores exemplos de simbiose entre microrganismos na natureza. Os métodos taxonómicos tradicionais baseados em métodos de cultura vêm sendo substituidos por técnicas moleculares que apresentam maior velocidade a acurácia. Objetivo: Caracterizar a diversidade bacteriana ruminal em novilhos Nelore mantidos em pastagens tropicais mediante o sequenciamento do gene 16S rRNA utilizando a plataforma de sequenciamento Illumina. Métodos: Foram utilizados trés novilhos Nelore fistulados no rúmen. A fração liquida e solida do conteúdo ruminal foram processadas para extrair o DNA metagenômico, e as regiões hipervariáveis VI e V 2 do gene 16S rRNA foram sequenciadas na plataforma Illumina. Resultados: No total foram geradas 11.407.000 leituras de qualidade adequada, e 812 unidades taxonomicas operacionais (OTUs) foram identificadas no nivel de espécie. Foram identificados 27 filos, e houve predomináncia de Firmicutes (23%), Bacteroidetes (14%), Proteobacteria (10%), Spirochaetes (9%), Fibrobacteres (7%), Tenericutes (5%) e Actinobacteria (2 %), os quais representaram 70% dos filos identificados a partir do rúmen bovino. Conclusão: O ambiente ruminal em novilhos Nelore em pastejo apresentou alta diversidade bacteriana, com Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Spirochaetes e Fibrobacteres como filos predominantes.Antecedentes: Los microorganismos ruminales han desarrollado una serie de interacciones complejas que representan uno de los mejores ejemplos de simbiosis entre microorganismos en la naturaleza. Los métodos taxonómicos tradicionales basados en técnicas de cultivo están siendo reemplazados por técnicas moleculares debido a su mayor velocidad y precisión. Objetivo: Caracterizar la diversidad bacteriana ruminal de novillos Nelore mantenidos en pasturas tropicales mediante la secuenciación del gen 16S RNA utilizando la plataforma de secuenciación Illumina. Métodos: Se utilizaron tres novillos Nelore fistulados en el rumen. Las fracciones líquida y sólida del contenido ruminal fueron procesadas para la extracción del DNA meta genómico y las regiones hipervariables VI y V2 del gen 16S rRNA fueron secuenciadas usando la plataforma Illumina. Resultados: En total, se generaron 11.407.000 lecturas de calidad adecuada, y en el nivel de especie se encontraron 812 unidades taxonómicas operacionales (OTUs). Se identificaron veintisiete filos, predominantemente Firmicutes (23%), Bacteroidetes (14%), Proteobacteria (10%), Spirochaetes (9%), Fibrobacteres (7%), Tenericutes (5%) y Actinobacteria (2%), los cuales representaron el 70% de los filos identificados en el contenido ruminal. Conclusión: El ambiente ruminal de novillos Nelore en pastoreo presenta una alta diversidad de bacterias, con dominancia de los filos Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Spirochaetes y Fibrobacteres
