Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint is characterized by restriction or limitation of mandibular movement. It presents as a classic symptom a limited range of motion on opening. Radiographically, ankylosis presents features that facilitate the diagnosis. However, its visualization is not clear in most of the cases involving conventional radiographic techniques. With the evolution of radiographic techniques, computed tomography (CT) became an important examination in the diagnosis of the ankylosis of temporomandibular joint. Due to the increasing use of the CT and its importance in the diagnosis of this disease, the aim of this paper is to present and describe tomographic images of ankylosis of this joint by presenting two clinical cases, using several slices as axial, coronal, and three-dimensional reformatted images

This report describes anatomical variations in an indigenous patient from the Brazilian Amazon. A 13-year-old indigenous girl attended the dental clinic for a routine examination. Clinically, a change in the coronary morphology of all upper incisors was observed; characterized by a shovel-shaped lingual surface-a feature considered a polygenic hereditary trait commonly found in native American people. The x-ray examination revealed the presence of a root anomaly in the left upper central incisor. A cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan was performed, revealing the presence of a supernumerary root located on the lingual surface. A single wide canal, which bifurcated in the middle-third level into two canals with different foramina, was observed in the cervical portion. It is essential for dental surgeons to be aware of possible anatomical differences, especially considering the origin of the patient, to avoid interference in treatment success. Keywords: Abnormalities; Cone-beam Computed Tomography; Health Services; Indigenous; Tooth Roo

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the action of the vitamin E as a radioprotective agent in the process of tissue reparation in rats submitted to a surgical procedure, which consisted of a wound done in the fore dorsal area. The animals were divided into five groups: group C (controls) - wound; group VE - previous treatment with vitamin E (90 UI); group IR - wound and irradiation of the borders three days after surgery; group VEIR - previous treatment with 90 UI of the vitamin E and irradiation of the borders three days after the surgery; group OIR - previous treatment with olive oil and irradiation of the borders three days after surgery. The radioprotective effect of the vitamin E was evaluated using hematoxylin-eosin stained specimens in order to identify granulation tissue, at 4, 7, 14 and 21 days after the surgical procedures. The results showed that 6 Gy of electron irradiation with a beam of 6 MeV caused retardation of the tissue repairing process and that vitamin E was effective as a radioprotective agent.

Objective: To conduct a comparative analysis between manual and computerized tracings using specific software, in order to define inter- and intraobserver results. Methods: A sample was used consisting of 50 standardized lateral cephalometric radiographs, of male and female patients of various age groups. The radiographs were analyzed by two observers, who each performed the manual and computerized tracings of all 50 radiographs. Angular and linear measurements were obtained, which were later submitted to the Mann-Whitney test in order to compare the inter- and intraobserver results between the two types of tracings. Results and Conclusions: the study concluded that confidence can be increased in tracings obtained from computer-assisted cephalometric analysis, as the discrepancies found between inter- and intraobserver tracings, both manual and computerized, were mostly not statistically significant.OBJETIVO: realizar uma análise comparativa dos traçados manual e computadorizado utilizando um software específico, com a finalidade de definir os resultados inter e intra-avaliadores.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the radioprotector effect of sodium selenite on the ultrastructure of submandibular glands in rats. Fifty-seven male albino Wistar rats were randomized to 4 groups: control, irradiated, sodium selenite and irradiated/sodium selenite. The animals in the sodium selenite and irradiated/sodium selenite groups received intraperitoneal injections of sodium selenite (0.5 mg/kg body weight) 24 h before irradiation. The animals belonging to the irradiated and irradiated/sodium selenite groups were submitted to 15 Gy of gamma radiation in the head and neck region. The submandibular glands were removed at 4, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h after irradiation. The ionizing radiation induced damage to the secretory cells, especially the serous cells, right from the first period. Vacuolization, lysis of cytoplasmic inclusions and nuclear alterations occurred. The sodium selenite group also presented cellular alterations in the study periods, but with less damage compared to that caused by radiation. There was greater similarity between the irradiated/sodium selenite group and the control group than with the other groups treated in all study periods. Despite the alterations observed in the sodium selenite group, sodium selenite presented a radioprotective action on the secretory cells of submandibular glands
