    Correlation Function of Galaxy Groups

We use the Updated Zwicky Catalog of galaxies (Falco et al. 1999) to generate a catalog of groups, by means of a friend-of-friend algorithm. The correlation length of the total sample is well fitted with a power law ξ(r)=(r/r0)γ \xi(r)=(r/r_0)^\gamma with parameters r0=9.0±0.4h1Mpcr_0=9.0 \pm 0.4 h^{-1}Mpc and γ=1.67±0.09\gamma = -1.67 \pm 0.09 for values of r<70h1Mpcr<70 h^{-1} Mpc. Three subsamples defined by the range of group virial masses M{\cal M} were used to have their clustering properties examined throughout the autocorrelation function. We find an increase of the amplitude of the correlation function according to the group masses which extends the results of the r0dc r_0-d_c relation for galaxy systems at small dcd_c. For completeness we have also analyzed a sample of groups obtained from the Southern Sky Redshift Survey (da Costa et al.1998) in the range of virial masses 5×1012M<M<4×1014M5\times10^{12}M_{\odot}<{\cal M}<4\times10^{14}M_{\odot} to compare the results with those obtained from GUZC.Comment: 9 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Quasar-galaxy and AGN-galaxy cross-correlations

We compute quasar-galaxy and AGN-galaxy cross-correlation functions for samples taken from the \cite{VCV98} catalog of quasars and active galaxies, using tracer galaxies taken from the Edinburgh/Durham Southern Catalog. The sample of active galaxy targets shows positive correlation at projected separations rp<6h1Mpcr_p < 6 h^{-1} Mpc consistent with the usual power-law. On the other hand, we do not find a statistically significant positive quasar-galaxy correlation signal except in the range 3h1Mpc<rp<6h1Mpc3 h^{-1} Mpc < r_p < 6 h^{-1} Mpc where we find similar AGN-galaxy and quasar-galaxy correlation amplitudes. At separations rp<3h1Mpcr_p<3 h^{-1} Mpc a strong decline of quasar-galaxy correlations is observed, suggesting a significant local influence of quasars in galaxy formation. In an attempt to reproduce the observed cross-correlation between quasars and galaxies, we have performed CDM cosmological hydrodynamical simulations and tested the viability of a scenario based on the model developed by \cite{silkrees98}. In this scheme a fraction of the energy released by quasars is considered to be transferred into the baryonic component of the intergalactic medium in the form of winds. The results of the simulations suggest that the shape of the observed quasar-galaxy cross-correlation function could be understood in a scenario where a substantial amount of energy is transferred to the medium at the redshift of maximum quasar activity.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. The anti-acetylcholinesterase, larvicidal, antifeedant activities and general toxicity of 15 semisynthetic eugenol derivatives based on clove oil (including the own oil), were evaluated against the maize armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Therefore, promising eugenol molecules were classified with larvicidal, anti-acetylcholinesterase and antifeedant activities for controlling this pest. During structure–activity relationship studies and physicochemical profile analysis, it was found that among tested molecules 1-15, eugenol 1, prenyl eugenol 4, isoeugenol 8 and isoeugenol acetate 11 exhibited lethal effects LD50 at concentrations < 1 mg/g of insect. On the other hand, eugenol 1, metallyl eugenol 3, isoeugenol 8 and isoeugenol acetate 11 showed a good antifeedant activity (CE50 =158-209 µg/mL) with a high antifeedant index (70-78 %) at concentration 1000 µg/mL, possessing a weak antiacetylcholinesterase activity (IC50 = 21-31 g/mL). According to their ecotoxicological profiles (LC50 = 2033.1-6303.8 µg/mL on Artemia salina larvae), isoeugenol 8 and its acetate derivative 11 could be potential used in control of the growth, feeding, or reproduction of S. frugiperda larvae, acting as moderate insecticidal acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and/or antifeedant molecules. Such structure–activity relationship studies could stimulate the identification of lead structures from natural sources for the development of larvicidal and deterrent products against S. frugiperda and related insect pests.Fil: Vargas Méndez, Leonor Y.. . Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT0281186

However, this relationship remains unclear in young euthyroid adults. The present work examines the associations of circulating thyroid hormones (THs) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations with body composition and cardiometabolic risk factors in young euthyroid adults. A total of 106 sedentary, euthyroid adults (72 women; 22 ± 2 years old) participated in this cross-sectional study. THs and TSH serum concentrations were determined in fasting conditions (6 h). Body composition (fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT)) was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, anthropometric parameters (weight, height, and waist circumference) were measured, and neck adipose tissue mass was quantified through computed tomography (CT) scanning. Cardiometabolic risk factors including fasting glucose and lipid metabolism markers, hepatic phosphatase and transaminases, and blood pressure were also assessed. Free triiodothyronine (FT3) concentration was positively associated with body mass index, LM, VAT, and waist circumference (all P ≤ 0.038). FT3 was also associated with glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR, fatty liver index, and blood pressure (all P < 0.024). All the associations were attenuated when adjusting for sex. In contrast, we found no associations of TSH or free thyroxine with any body composition parameter or cardiometabolic risk factors. In conclusion, FT3 is associated with central adiposity and cardiometabolic risk factors including insulin resistance, fatty liver index, and mean, systolic and diastolic blood pressure in young euthyroid adults. Cluster-Galaxy Correlations in CDM Models

    Get PDF
We study the ability of COBE-normalized CDM models to reproduce observed properties of the distribution of galaxies and clusters using N-body numerical simulations. We analyze the galaxy-galaxy and cluster-galaxy two-point correlation functions, ξgg\xi_{gg} and ξcg\xi_{cg}, in open (Ω0=0.4,ΩΛ=0,σ8=0.75\Omega_{0}=0.4, \Omega_{\Lambda}=0, \sigma_8=0.75), and flat (Ω0=0.3,ΩΛ=0.7,σ8=1.05\Omega_{0}=0.3, \Omega_{\Lambda}=0.7, \sigma_8=1.05) CDM models which both reproduce the observed abundances of rich clusters of galaxies. To compare models with observations we compute projected cross-correlation functions ωgg\omega_{gg} and ωcg\omega_{cg} to derive the corresponding ξgg\xi_{gg} and ξcg\xi_{cg}. We use target galaxies selected from Las Campanas Redshift Survey, target clusters selected from the APM Cluster Survey and tracer galaxies from the Edinburgh Durham Sky Survey catalog.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, to appear in: The Astrophysical Journa

Differential requirements for actin during yeast and mammalian endocytosis

    Get PDF
Key features of clathrin-mediated endocytosis have been conserved across evolution. However, endocytosis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae is completely dependent on a functional actin cytoskeleton, whereas actin appears to be less critical in mammalian cell endocytosis. We reveal that the fundamental requirement for actin in the early stages of yeast endocytosis is to provide a strong framework to support the force generation needed to direct the invaginating plasma membrane into the cell against turgor pressure. By providing osmotic support, pressure differences across the plasma membrane were removed and this reduced the requirement for actin-bundling proteins in normal endocytosis. Conversely, increased turgor pressure in specific yeast mutants correlated with a decreased rate of endocytic patch invagination
