    Life-Shortening \u3cem\u3eWolbachia\u3c/em\u3e Infection Reduces Population Growth of \u3cem\u3eAedes aegypti\u3c/em\u3e

    Wolbachia bacteria are being introduced into natural populations of vector mosquitoes, with the goal of reducing the transmission of human diseases such as Zika and dengue fever. The successful establishment of Wolbachia infection is largely dependent on the effects of Wolbachia infection to host fitness, but the effects of Wolbachia infection on the individual life-history traits of immature mosquitoes can vary. Here, the effects of life-shortening Wolbachia (wMelPop) on population growth of infected individuals were evaluated by measuring larval survival, developmental time and adult size of Aedes aegypti in intra- (infected or uninfected only) and inter-group (mixed with infected and uninfected) larval competition assays. At low larval density conditions, the population growth of wMelPop infected and uninfected individuals was similar. At high larval densities, wMelPop infected individuals had a significantly reduced population growth rate relative to uninfected individuals, regardless of competition type. We discuss the results in relation to the invasion of the wMelPop Wolbachia infection into naturally uninfected populations

    Interactive whiteboards have been rapidly introduced into all primary schools under UK Government initiatives. These large, touch-sensitive screens, which control a computer connected to a digital projector, seem to be the first type of educational technology particularly suited for whole-class teaching and learning. Strong claims are made for their value by manufacturers and policy makers, but there has been little research on how, if at all, they influence established pedagogic practices, communicative processes and educational goals. This study has been designed to examine this issue, using observations in primary (elementary) school classrooms. It is funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council and builds on the authors’ previous research on ICT in educational dialogues and collaborative activities

    Supercritical maneuvering fighter configuration. Wind-tunnel investigation at Mach numbers of 0.60 to 0.95

    A wind tunnel investigation was conducted to study the application of supercritical technology to highly maneuverable combat aircraft. The configuration studied has a leading-edge sweep of 45 deg and an aspect ratio of 3.28. Two supercritical-wing shapes were tested at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 0.95 with angles of attack from -2 deg to 17 deg. On supercritical wing was designed to achieve a high level of transonic maneuver performance at a Mach number of 0.90; however, excessive flow separation developed on this wing at a Mach number of 0.85. A second supercritical wing was tested which had significantly reduced flow separation and improved drag characteristics at a Mach number of 0.85 and maintained the performance of the original wing at the higher Mach numbers. Leading-edge vortex generators did not improve the performance of the second wing; however, a sharp leading-edge flap produced sizable drag reductions at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 0.90

    From multiple perspectives to shared understanding

    The aim of this study was to explore how learners operating in a small group reach shared understanding as they work out joint research questions and build a theoretical framework and to identify the resources and tools they used in the process. The learners’ own interpretations of their group activities and learning were also taken into account. The data, consisting of group discussions and the documents produced by the group, were subjected to a qualitative content analysis. The group members employed a variety of resources and tools to exchange their individual perspectives and achieve shared understanding. Summaries of relevant literature laid a foundation for the group’s theoretical discussions. Reflective comparisons between their book knowledge and their personal experiences of online interaction and collaboration were frequent, suggesting that such juxtapositions may have enhanced their learning by intertwining the content to be mastered and the activities entailed by this particular content

    Combustion waves in a model with chain branching reaction and their stability

    In this paper the travelling wave solutions in the adiabatic model with two-step chain branching reaction mechanism are investigated both numerically and analytically in the limit of equal diffusivity of reactant, radicals and heat. The properties of these solutions and their stability are investigated in detail. The behaviour of combustion waves are demonstrated to have similarities with the properties of nonadiabatic one-step combustion waves in that there is a residual amount of fuel left behind the travelling waves and the solutions can exhibit extinction. The difference between the nonadiabatic one-step and adiabatic two-step models is found in the behaviour of the combustion waves near the extinction condition. It is shown that the flame velocity drops down to zero and a standing combustion wave is formed as the extinction condition is reached.
