Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) drive is considered as a possible alternative to other conventional variable-speed drives because of several advantages [1], [2]. However, in order for the performance of a switched reluctance motor drive to suit several applications, it has to be tailored through appropriate control. Rotor position sensing is an integral part of SRM control because of the nature of torque production. Sensorless control reduces overall cost and dimension of the drive in addition to improving reliability. In this thesis, an Inductance Model Based Sensorless [8] Switched Reluctance Motor is used to design the drive controller for SRM. A hysteresis current controller and a speed controller were implemented to produce smooth torque and a stable speed for SRM. In addition, the do power supply for the SRM was derived from Fuel Cell Stack rather than from batteries or from utility lines through a front-end diode rectifier. In this research, first, the current controller and the speed controller are developed and connected to the Inductance Based Sensorless SRM model with the Fuel Cell Stack model and an offline simulation using Matlab/Simulink is obtained. A detailed computer model of the SRM control drive connected to the Fuel Cell stack model is developed in which the design of the proposed controller scheme is verified. As a next major step, a Real-Time simulation was obtained for the model using Opal-RT platform, and a comparison between the offline simulation results and real time simulation results is developed. As a final step, the characteristics of the SRM Inductance model, Controller model, and the Fuel Cell stack model are studied in detail, which is required in order to use them in future applications.Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Get PDF
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)The presented study contributes to growing and necessary research compilations that include the field of Deaf Education and First Year Composition. The central goal of this study is to better understand what d/Deaf students, American Sign Language interpreters, and writing instructors currently experience when working together in a mainstream writing classroom to conduct clear communication among all participants. To address the support of d/Deaf students in such environments, a review of current literature that intersects the fields of Deaf Education, Disability Studies, and Writing and Rhetoric was conducted. Then, an IRB approved general interview study was conducted with culturally Deaf students, mainstream writing educators, and a nationally certified interpreter of the Deaf. Although this research touches just the very edges of an entire situation of inquiry and discourse, it offers a starting point from which educators and researchers alike can continue to develop further analysis of communication techniques to support d/Deaf writers in the writing classroom at the college level

Control and Power Supply for Resistance Spot Welding (RSW)

    Get PDF
In the automobile industry, Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) is widely used for its low cost, high speed, simple mechanism and applicability for automation. RSW has become the predominant means of auto body assembly, resulting in two to six thousands spot welds performed on each manufactured car. In the North American automobile industry there are approximately 100 billion spot welds, which are done every year. RSW is the joining of two or more metal parts together in a localized area by resistive heating and pressure. Small Scale RSW (SSRSW) is commonly used for medical devices and electronic components, because the welded parts are thinner and smaller compared to common RSW applications, such as automotive applications. According to a study of Edison Welding Institute, 20% of the welding quality issues are the weld schedule or power supply related. Therefore, to contribute to weld quality improvement, the study of different weld schedules or power supplies and control schemes needs to be improved by doing further studies in this area. Thus a novel power supply, which can provide a testing bench for these studies, was designed and developed in 2005 by L. J. Brown and J. Lin. This research study will focus on studying and improving weld power supplies, weld schedules and control modes. One of the goals for this research is to improve the consistency of weld nugget size and strength by using different control parameters, which will be weighted geometric averages of voltage and current. These control parameters are fed back to a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller that is designed to control the Direct Current (DC) power supply for the RSW to come up with the best control parameters that will improve the consistency of the RSW spot welds. Another goal for this research is it to further develop the existing DC power supply that was designed for SSRSW by L. J. Brown, to include tip voltage measurements, and Large Scale Resistance Spot Welding (LSRSW). This goal will lead to build additional weld modules to construct a 6000A welder in the future

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant differences in students based of education demographics and what factors contributed to the successful completion of online courses for postsecondary education students. Specifically, this study sought to determine if there was a significant difference between certain educational demographics (gender, race, classification, course, and professor) and grade; a significant relationship between specific online course features (availability of chat, videos, discussion boards, and video conferences) and grade; a significant relationship between certain student behaviors (location of access, time to complete assignments, interaction with content, frequency of access, interaction with instructor, and interaction with students) and grade; and students’ perception and grades. A Kruskal-Wallis analysis was conducted to analyze differences within and between groups by educational demographics. Spearman Rho’s Correlations were computed to examine if a significant relationship existed between the aforementioned independent variables and the dependent variable of students’ grades. After the data were collected and analyzed, the findings showed that there were no statistically significant differences among students who completed online courses. There was no statistically significant relationships between the independent variables and students’ grades

Do Support Groups Mitigate the Effects of Imposter Syndrome?

    Get PDF
Imposter syndrome is defined as the persistent inability to believe that one\u27s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one\u27s own efforts or skills. Small support groups utilized in an academic environment could prove to be effective in mitigating the effects of imposter syndrome. A total of 4 articles were individually reviewed and included for meta-analysis. Each study was conducted on students studying medicine and utilized support groups at the core of their intervention for combating imposter syndrome and improving overall psychological wellness. Results were based on surveys and yielded an overall positive response from participants. While these results were subjective in nature, the diagnosis of imposter syndrome is subjective as well, leading to the conclusion that support groups do have an impact on the effects of imposter syndrome. However, further studies should be conducted in order to reach more definitive conclusions on the details necessary for optimal support group implementation
