    Procedure for Experiential Learning to Conduct Material Flow Simulation Projects, Enabled by Learning Factories

    Material flow simulation is a powerful tool to identify improvements in factory operation. For conducting simulation projects, experts are required who know how to prepare, execute and evaluate simulation studies. To date, training mostly focusses on textual case studies, whereby learners perform simulation studies based on a problem and data given in a description. However, this hardly reflects the ways engineers learn. They are mostly used to physically experiment based on their experience. In this paper, a procedure for experiential learning to conduct material flow simulation projects is elaborated, enabled by learning factories. A learning situation at Vietnamese-German University is described. Results indicate, that the students gain particular awareness about the challenges associated with the abstraction of the reality and the interpretation of the simulation outcomes

    Natural infant-directed speech facilitates neural tracking of prosody

    Infants prefer to be addressed with infant-directed speech (IDS). IDS benefits language acquisition through amplified low-frequency amplitude modulations. It has been reported that this amplification increases electrophysiological tracking of IDS compared to adult-directed speech (ADS). It is still unknown which particular frequency band triggers this effect. Here, we compare tracking at the rates of syllables and prosodic stress, which are both critical to word segmentation and recognition. In mother-infant dyads (n=30), mothers described novel objects to their 9-month-olds while infants’ EEG was recorded. For IDS, mothers were instructed to speak to their children as they typically do, while for ADS, mothers described the objects as if speaking with an adult. Phonetic analyses confirmed that pitch features were more prototypically infant-directed in the IDS-condition compared to the ADS-condition. Neural tracking of speech was assessed by speech-brain coherence, which measures the synchronization between speech envelope and EEG. Results revealed significant speech-brain coherence at both syllabic and prosodic stress rates, indicating that infants track speech in IDS and ADS at both rates. We found significantly higher speech-brain coherence for IDS compared to ADS in the prosodic stress rate but not the syllabic rate. This indicates that the IDS benefit arises primarily from enhanced prosodic stress. Thus, neural tracking is sensitive to parents’ speech adaptations during natural interactions, possibly facilitating higher-level inferential processes such as word segmentation from continuous speech

    Language independent transfer of assembly knowledge

    Transferring assembly knowledge for workers with different cultural and linguistic background is challenging. The established solution of translating written instructions into multiple languages is mostly cost intensive, holds a potential for mistakes and the result might be hard to understand. To cope with this challenge, three different assembly instructions with language reduced or language independent content have been tested in a study with students in Vietnam and Germany. The types of instructions were interactive 3D-PDF, Utility-Film and illustrated manual. Assembly errors, assembly time, safety symbol awareness and assembly sequences understanding are compared and evaluated based on students’ technical pre-knowledge and experience. The 3D-PDF showed to be the best solution to be applied in this complex environment, because users were able to assemble the parts faster and experienced a higher degree of interactivity compared to the other instructions

    On Hurst exponent estimation under heavy-tailed distributions

    In this paper, we show how the sampling properties of the Hurst exponent methods of estimation change with the presence of heavy tails. We run extensive Monte Carlo simulations to find out how rescaled range analysis (R/S), multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA), detrending moving average (DMA) and generalized Hurst exponent approach (GHE) estimate Hurst exponent on independent series with different heavy tails. For this purpose, we generate independent random series from stable distribution with stability exponent {\alpha} changing from 1.1 (heaviest tails) to 2 (Gaussian normal distribution) and we estimate the Hurst exponent using the different methods. R/S and GHE prove to be robust to heavy tails in the underlying process. GHE provides the lowest variance and bias in comparison to the other methods regardless the presence of heavy tails in data and sample size. Utilizing this result, we apply a novel approach of the intraday time-dependent Hurst exponent and we estimate the Hurst exponent on high frequency data for each trading day separately. We obtain Hurst exponents for S&P500 index for the period beginning with year 1983 and ending by November 2009 and we discuss the surprising result which uncovers how the market's behavior changed over this long period

    Palaeoenvironmental research at Hawelti–Melazo (Tigray, northern Ethiopia) – insights from sedimentological and geomorphological analyses

    The sites of Hawelti–Melazo in the Tigray region of the northern Ethiopian Highlands is an archaeological hotspot related to the D'mt kingdom (ca. 800–400 BCE). The existence of several monumental buildings, which have been excavated since the 1950s, underline the importance of this area in the Ethio-Sabaean period. We investigated the geomorphological and geological characteristics of the site and its surroundings and carried out sedimentological analyses, as well as direct (luminescence) and indirect (radiocarbon) sediment dating, to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental conditions, which we integrated into the wider context of Tigray. Luminescence dating of feldspar grains from the May Agazin catchment indicate enhanced fluvial activity in the late Pleistocene, likely connected to the re-occurring monsoon after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The abundance of trap basalt on the Melazo plateau, which provides the basis for the development of fertile soils, and the presumably higher groundwater level during the Ethio-Sabaean Period, provided favourable settlement conditions. The peninsula-like shape of the Melazo plateau was easily accessible only from the east and northeast, while relatively steep scarps enclose the other edges of the plateau. This adds a possible natural protective function to this site.</p

    The ToF and Trigger electronics of the PAMELA experiment

    The PAMELA satellite-borne experiment, scheduled to be launched in 2004, is designed to provide a better understanding of the antimatter component of the cosmic rays. Its ToF scintillator system will provide the primary experimental trigger and time-of-flight particle identification. The time resolution requested is σ, < 120 ps. To fulfill the detector requirements the digitization electronics should have a time resolution ≤ 50 ps and provide a wide dynamic range for charge measurements. The peculiarity of the developed electronics arises from the need to obtain such a time resolution operating in a satellite environment, which implies low-power consumption, radiation hardness, redundancy and high reliability
