    Subjects’ perception in quantifying printed and digital photos of food portions

    Although digital photos have the potential to improve the precision of reported portions in dietary assessment, there are few studies investigating its accuracy in comparison to printed photos. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of adults in quantifying food portion sizes using printed and digital photos, displayed on computer-screens and tablets. In total, 1165 evaluations were performed for 60 photos of portion sizes in Brazil. Each participant (n = 58) attended two sessions in the study center, with an interval of at least one week. In each session, twelve food portions were prepared and randomly evaluated by each participant in its printed and digital forms. The mean error (difference between the estimated and true portions) was not significantly different between the printed photos (2.1g ± 47.2) and the digital ones (-6.4g ± 53.7). The agreement on using the printed and digital photos was 91% and 90%, respectively. Furthermore, the use of the tablet was more prone to underestimation when compared to printed and computer-screen photos (p < 0.001). Overall, participants did not present major difficulties in perceiving the portion sizes using the printed and digital photos, but the use of tablets led to less accurate results, indicating that this needs to be further evaluated

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.     The 2021 WHO catalogue of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex mutations associated with drug resistance: a genotypic analysis.

    Background: Molecular diagnostics are considered the most promising route to achievement of rapid, universal drug susceptibility testing for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC). We aimed to generate a WHO-endorsed catalogue of mutations to serve as a global standard for interpreting molecular information for drug resistance prediction. Methods: In this systematic analysis, we used a candidate gene approach to identify mutations associated with resistance or consistent with susceptibility for 13 WHO-endorsed antituberculosis drugs. We collected existing worldwide MTBC whole-genome sequencing data and phenotypic data from academic groups and consortia, reference laboratories, public health organisations, and published literature. We categorised phenotypes as follows: methods and critical concentrations currently endorsed by WHO (category 1); critical concentrations previously endorsed by WHO for those methods (category 2); methods or critical concentrations not currently endorsed by WHO (category 3). For each mutation, we used a contingency table of binary phenotypes and presence or absence of the mutation to compute positive predictive value, and we used Fisher's exact tests to generate odds ratios and Benjamini-Hochberg corrected p values. Mutations were graded as associated with resistance if present in at least five isolates, if the odds ratio was more than 1 with a statistically significant corrected p value, and if the lower bound of the 95% CI on the positive predictive value for phenotypic resistance was greater than 25%. A series of expert rules were applied for final confidence grading of each mutation. Findings: We analysed 41 137 MTBC isolates with phenotypic and whole-genome sequencing data from 45 countries. 38 215 MTBC isolates passed quality control steps and were included in the final analysis. 15 667 associations were computed for 13 211 unique mutations linked to one or more drugs. 1149 (7·3%) of 15 667 mutations were classified as associated with phenotypic resistance and 107 (0·7%) were deemed consistent with susceptibility. For rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol, fluoroquinolones, and streptomycin, the mutations' pooled sensitivity was more than 80%. Specificity was over 95% for all drugs except ethionamide (91·4%), moxifloxacin (91·6%) and ethambutol (93·3%). Only two resistance mutations were identified for bedaquiline, delamanid, clofazimine, and linezolid as prevalence of phenotypic resistance was low for these drugs. Interpretation: We present the first WHO-endorsed catalogue of molecular targets for MTBC drug susceptibility testing, which is intended to provide a global standard for resistance interpretation. The existence of this catalogue should encourage the implementation of molecular diagnostics by national tuberculosis programmes.     Obesidade e qualidade de vida após procedimentos bariátricos no Brasil / Obesity and quality of life after bariatric procedures in Brazil

    Com as inúmeras revoluções científicas, datadas desde a primeira revolução industrial, surgem nas áreas médicas procedimentos cirúrgicos cada vez menos invasivos e mais eficazes naquilo em que se propõem. Diante desse contexto, a cirurgia bariátrica, que revolucionou a vida de inúmeros pacientes desde a sua criação, estabelece-se como intervenção capaz de gerar melhor qualidade de vida e sobrevida. Com ênfase em analisar os benefícios e possíveis malefícios desse procedimento cirúrgico, o artigo em questão se debruça na bibliografia existente, por meio de uma Revisão Integrativa da Literatura, com a finalidade de elencar o real impacto da cirurgia bariátrica na vida de obesos operados. E constata que o procedimento bariátrico gera benefícios biopsicossociais na vida do indivíduo e que apesar das evidentes transformações físicas e psicológicas a cirurgia não é um procedimento simples que deve ser feita sem parâmetros claros e bem definidos, porque apesar dos reais impactos positivos há também complicações que podem ocorrer. Dessa forma, apesar das inúmeras evidências comprovando a real eficácia do procedimento bariátrico a literatura científica evidencia que a intervenção deve ser feita nas pessoas com reais necessidades, pois possui suas consequências.

    A obesidade na criança e no adolescente vem se tornando alvo de grande preocupação de órgãos nacionais e internacionais de saúde, pois já é constatado pela literatura científica que a composição corporal influi no metabolismo do indivíduo, tendo em vista que diante do excesso de tecido adiposo a suscetibilidade do desenvolvimento de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis aumenta. Isso ocorre por alguns motivos, sendo o principal o papel endócrino que o tecido adiposo exerce.Com o objetivo de analisar as implicações da obesidade na criança e no adolescente, por meio de uma Revisão Integrativa da Literatura, o artigo em questão constata que, de acordo com estudos nacionais, crianças e adolescentes já possuem aumento de fatores inflamatórios, níveis de leptina, resistina, pressão arterial atestando que o desenvolvimento de comorbidades nessas faixas etárias já é previsível.Portanto, com a convicção de que a obesidade pode alterar a vida do indivíduo em seus diversos aspectos é importante repensar em como promover hábitos de vida mais saudáveis e mais consciência do quanto à alimentação pode influenciar no acometimento de doenças em um indivíduo e na sua sobrevida.
