The impact of the COVID-19 restrictions on womenâs responsibility for domestic food provision: The Case of Marondera Urban in Zimbabwe
When pandemics hit communities, women are bound to suffer as most of the responsibilities of ensuring food security lie on them. This article assesses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the role that church-going women play in food provision. The qualitative study used interviews and focus group discussions to examine the toll of the pandemic-induced restrictions, especially with regard to their disruption of activities that ensure the provision of food for the family. They sought to identify how an environment as restrictive as the one that was imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic affects those largely responsible for food provision in urban Marondera â the women, in this case. The focus was extended to factor in how disasters and pandemics affect women and detract from their normative food procurement and provision roles in marginal societies and how these effects can be mitigated to allow women to carry on with their roles even in restrictive environments. This research was motivated by the recent COVID-19-imposed regulations that restricted the movement of people, restrictions that have only recently been relaxed and (in some cases) removed. We also sought to establish how gender roles are played out, together with whether they are exacerbated by pandemics, and in what ways these pandemics result in higher workloads on women. By utilising the Africana womanist theory, the study analysed women roles in food provision and food security in their societies within the restrictive environments of the pandemics.
Contribution:Â This study concluded that there are gender inequalities that are exacerbated by these pandemics that result in higher workloads for women. It foregrounded how existing gender inequalities were exacerbated by the pandemic, resulting in higher workloads on women. It therefore recommended that women should form empowerment groups to help focus attention on food provision to mitigate challenges women face in this role. Finally, we averred that there ought to be consultation and participation of women on issues to do with pandemics to allow for their full and productive participation in critical roles of providing food
âForgotten Europeansâ: transnational minority activism in the age of European integration
YesThis article examines transnational activism by coalitions of national minorities in Europe from the early 20th century to the present, setting this within the broader âsecurity versus democracy dilemmaâ that continues to surround international discussions on minority rights. Specifically, we analyse two organisations â the European Nationalities Congress (1925â1938) and the Federal Union of European Nationalities (1949â) â which, while linked, have never been subject to a detailed comparison based on primary sources. In so far as comparisons do exist, they present these bodies in highly negative terms, as mere fronts for inherently particularistic nationalisms that threaten political stability, state integrity and peace. Our more inâdepth analysis provides a fresh and more nuanced perspective: it shows that, in both cases, concepts of European integration and âunity in diversityâ have provided the motivating goals and frameworks for transnational movements advocating common rights for all minorities and seeking positive interaction with the interstate world
Age-related cognitive decline and associations with sex, education and apolipoprotein E genotype across ethnocultural groups and geographic regions: a collaborative cohort study
Background: The prevalence of dementia varies around the world, potentially contributed to by international differences in rates of age-related cognitive decline. Our primary goal was to investigate how rates of age-related decline in cognitive test performance varied among international cohort studies of cognitive aging. We also determined the extent to which sex, educational attainment, and apolipoprotein E e4 allele (APOE*4) carrier status were associated with decline. Methods and findings: We harmonized longitudinal data for 14 cohorts from 12 countries (Australia, Brazil, France, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain, South Korea, United Kingdom, United States), for a total of 42, 170 individuals aged 54â105 y (42% male), including 3.3% with dementia at baseline. The studies began between 1989 and 2011, with all but three ongoing, and each had 2â16 assessment waves (median = 3) and a follow-up duration of 2â15 y. We analyzed standardized Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and memory, processing speed, language, and executive functioning test scores using linear mixed models, adjusted for sex and education, and meta-analytic techniques. Performance on all cognitive measures declined with age, with the most rapid rate of change pooled across cohorts a moderate -0.26 standard deviations per decade (SD/decade) (95% confidence interval CI] -0.35, -0.16], p < 0.001) for processing speed. Rates of decline accelerated slightly with age, with executive functioning showing the largest additional rate of decline with every further decade of age (-0.07 SD/decade, 95% CI -0.10, -0.03], p = 0.002). There was a considerable degree of heterogeneity in the associations across cohorts, including a slightly faster decline (p = 0.021) on the MMSE for Asians (-0.20 SD/decade, 95% CI -0.28, -0.12], p < 0.001) than for whites (-0.09 SD/decade, 95% CI -0.16, -0.02], p = 0.009). Males declined on the MMSE at a slightly slower rate than females (difference = 0.023 SD/decade, 95% CI 0.011, 0.035], p < 0.001), and every additional year of education was associated with a rate of decline slightly slower for the MMSE (0.004 SD/decade less, 95% CI 0.002, 0.006], p = 0.001), but slightly faster for language (-0.007 SD/decade more, 95% CI -0.011, -0.003], p = 0.001). APOE*4 carriers declined slightly more rapidly than non-carriers on most cognitive measures, with processing speed showing the greatest difference (-0.08 SD/decade, 95% CI -0.15, -0.01], p = 0.019). The same overall pattern of results was found when analyses were repeated with baseline dementia cases excluded. We used only one test to represent cognitive domains, and though a prototypical one, we nevertheless urge caution in generalizing the results to domains rather than viewing them as test-specific associations. This study lacked cohorts from Africa, India, and mainland China. Conclusions: Cognitive performance declined with age, and more rapidly with increasing age, across samples from diverse ethnocultural groups and geographical regions. Associations varied across cohorts, suggesting that different rates of cognitive decline might contribute to the global variation in dementia prevalence. However, the many similarities and consistent associations with education and APOE genotype indicate a need to explore how international differences in associations with other risk factors such as genetics, cardiovascular health, and lifestyle are involved. Future studies should attempt to use multiple tests for each cognitive domain and feature populations from ethnocultural groups and geographical regions for which we lacked data

Validation of a novel multivariate method of defining HIV-associated cognitive impairment
Background. The optimum method of defining cognitive impairment in virally suppressed people living with HIV is unknown.
We evaluated the relationships between cognitive impairment, including using a novel multivariate method (NMM), patientâ
reported outcome measures (PROMs), and neuroimaging markers of brain structure across 3 cohorts.
Methods. Differences in the prevalence of cognitive impairment, PROMs, and neuroimaging data from the COBRA, CHARTER,
and POPPY cohorts (total n = 908) were determined between HIV-positive participants with and without cognitive impairment defined using the HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), global deficit score (GDS), and NMM criteria.
Results. The prevalence of cognitive impairment varied by up to 27% between methods used to define impairment (eg, 48% for HAND
vs 21% for NMM in the CHARTER study). Associations between objective cognitive impairment and subjective cognitive complaints generally were weak. Physical and mental health summary scores (SF-36) were lowest for NMM-defined impairment (P < .05).
There were no differences in brain volumes or cortical thickness between participants with and without cognitive impairment defined using the HAND and GDS measures. In contrast, those identified with cognitive impairment by the NMM had reduced mean
cortical thickness in both hemispheres (P < .05), as well as smaller brain volumes (P < .01). The associations with measures of white
matter microstructure and brain-predicted age generally were weaker.
Conclusion. Different methods of defining cognitive impairment identify different people with varying symptomatology and
measures of brain injury. Overall, NMM-defined impairment was associated with most neuroimaging abnormalities and poorer selfreported health status. This may be due to the statistical advantage of using a multivariate approac

@LOKAL is a music software that aims to aid amateur musicians in composing and arranging songs through the use of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface. The software utilizes MIDI in transmitting data between the computer and a synthesizer, or from the computer to the speaker, MIDI, is a device that links two modules or equipment possessing interface cards together, allowing the transmission of musical data from one to another. The software can greatly simplify the jobs of musicians by providing functions such as quantization, recording, editing and playback of sequence data. @LOKAL is a 4-track sequencer, meaning, it can play 4 different instruments simultaneously. It allows recording during playback for synchronization of music. Edit utilities such as cut, paste and undo are also provided and control changes such as tempo change, adjusting of time signature and transposition are also included. Notations and printing are not be supported by the software since these functions are seldom used. Instead, the music data are represented by black circles to allow the user to view the recorded music. It is the group\u27s aim to design a software that would meet the basic requirements of local arrangers. Through the software the proponents seek to help start MIDI software development in the country to provide for the needs of local musicians
Coupled Mach--Zehnder interferometer
