Aim: to identify professional practices about biosafety in the care of people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Method: descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach, which was carried out with 46 health professionals. A semi-structured interview was used and the analysis was performed using the Bardin content analysis technique. Results: the professionals demonstrate to have knowledge about the use of Personal Protective Equipment, evidencing a frequency of use according to the professional category, type of contact and procedure. In front of the outpatient need, the most cited equipment and utilities were glove, cap and capote. Conclusion: it was evident that professionals consciously perform biosafety and this can be positively reflected in the care taken, both in the protection of patients and of professionals, that is, in the care of the other and of themselves.

ATLANTIC EPIPHYTES: a data set of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte plants and lichens from the Atlantic Forest

    Get PDF
Epiphytes are hyper-diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non-vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer-reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non-vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non-vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. No copyright restrictions are associated with the data set. Please cite this Ecology Data Paper if the data are used in publication and teaching events. © 2019 The Authors. Taxonomy and ecology of Synedropsis roundii sp. nov. (Bacillariophyta) from a tropical brackish coastal lagoon, south-eastern Brazil

A new Synedropsis species is described from a coastal tropical lagoon in south-eastern Brazil. This species has a single chloroplast in both views of the valve, apical pore fields composed of three slits, and uniseriate striae. It is planktonic and was found in brackish water. Synedropsis roundii is the eighth Synedropsis species to be described and the first to be found in a tropical region. We studied the seasonal dynamics of S. roundii, which can form blooms in the coastal Imboassica Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Continuous mixing of this shallow environment is suggested to be an important physical factor determining the success of the species. Availability of soluble reactive silicon is thought to be the main factor regulating the large biomass fluctuations. In the classification of Reynolds in 1997 (Vegetation processes in the pelagic: a model for ecosystem theory. Ecology Institute, Oldendorf, Germany, 371 pp.), S. roundii appears to belong to D-assemblage, a set of small and fast-growing diatoms, well represented in small, shallow and enriched waters. We also offer a tentative habitat template for S. roundii

Faculdade de Medicina. Laboratorio de Pesquisas em Bacteriologia. Belo Horizonte, MG, BrazilTh17 cells seem to have an important role in the efficacy of vaccines against Helicobacter pylori. Because children are a target group for human vaccination and Th17/Treg cells have intrinsically linked and antagonic commitments, we compared the gastric levels of Th17- and Treg-associated cytokines of children and adults. IL-6, IL-10 and TGF-β1 levels and Foxp3+ cell numbers were higher, but IL-1β, IL-17A and IL-23 were lower in infected children than in infected adults. In conclusion Treg instead of Th17 cell response to H. pylori-infection predominates in children
