    Navigation mechanisms of herring during feeding migration: the role of ecological gradients on an oceanic scale

    The feeding migration of Norwegian spring-spawning herring was studied in relation to prey abundance and environmental factors that may affect their feeding migration. Temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a, nitrate concentration, abundance of Calanus finmarchicus, zooplankton biomass, acoustic data on herring and trawl samples were collected during four basin-scale surveys in the Norwegian Sea from April to August 1995. Herring abundance was positively associated with the overwintering population of C. finmarchicus. We suggest that spatial gradients and temporal dynamics of the seasonal ascent of the C. finmarchicus overwintering generation provide stimuli for and affect the feeding migration of herring. The clockwise migration pattern of herring, observed during the 1990s, can be explained by delayed ascent and development of C. finmarchicus toward the west and north in the Norwegian Sea. We further suggest that herring leave a specific area before their zooplankton prey is depleted. The first generation of C. finmarchicus likely has a minor influence in directing the herring feeding migration due to the low abundance of older stages available as prey. The feeding migration was constantly directed toward colder water, and temperature probably has a secondary effect on herring distribution

    Inducing Single-Handed Helicity in a Twisted Molecular Nanoribbon

    [EN] Molecular conformation has an important role in chemistry and materials science. Molecular nanoribbons can adopt chiral twisted helical conformations. However, the synthesis of single-handed helically twisted molecular nanoribbons still represents a considerable challenge. Herein, we describe an asymmetric approach to induce single-handed helicity with an excellent degree of conformational discrimination.     Disclination lines at homogeneous and heterogeneous colloids immersed in a chiral liquid crystal

    In the present work we perform Monte Carlo simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble to study defect topologies formed in a cholesteric liquid crystal due to the presence of a spherical colloidal particle. Topological defects arise because of the competition between anchoring at the colloidal surface and the local director. We consider homogeneous colloids with either local homeotropic or planar anchoring to validate our model by comparison with earlier lattice Boltzmann studies. Furthermore, we perform simulations of a colloid in a twisted nematic cell and discuss the difference between induced and intrinsic chirality on the formation of topological defects. We present a simple geometrical argument capable of describing the complex three-dimensional topology of disclination lines evolving near the surface of the colloid. The presence of a Janus colloid in a cholesteric host fluid reveals a rich variety of defect structures. Using the Frank free energy we analyze these defects quantitatively indicating a preferred orientation of the Janus colloid relative to the cholesteric helix.DFG, GRK 1524, Self-Assembled Soft-Matter Nanostructures at Interface

    The nesting ecology of weaverbirds in Ekona farms, Southwest Region, Cameroon

    Ecological factors play a key role in determining nest construction and success in weaver birds. The objective of this survey was to determine the ecological role on the nest construction in weaver birds in Ekona farms. The research data was collected from March – August 2016, by randomly laying six transects of 1km long and 100m wide each within the study area, and four different locations were visited also to observe the daily nesting-activities of the weaver birds. The ecological data of the weaver birds nesting behaviour was observed and recorded, against the day-period, weather and seasonal changes. The data was analysed using Chi-square and Pearson correlation statistical models. The result showed a positive correlation between the weaver birds' population and nest density in both seasons (R2=0.5407 at P < 0.05). Moreover, from the analysis, the relationship between nest-building and plant-type used recorded significance (X2= 69.1040, df= 28 at P < 0.05). In addition, it was observed that nest-building in the sunny weather was more intense than in rainy weather, 54.57% for sunny, 42.86% for rainy and 2.7% for cloudy weather conditions. Furthermore, there was a significant relationship (X2= 830.752, df=44 at P< 0.05) between weaver birds' activities and the day-period. The study has revealed that both the seasonal and weather changes can affect the nest-building activities of the weaver birds in Ekona farming area

    Parameterized Complexity of Asynchronous Border Minimization

    Microarrays are research tools used in gene discovery as well as disease and cancer diagnostics. Two prominent but challenging problems related to microarrays are the Border Minimization Problem (BMP) and the Border Minimization Problem with given placement (P-BMP). In this paper we investigate the parameterized complexity of natural variants of BMP and P-BMP under several natural parameters. We show that BMP and P-BMP are in FPT under the following two combinations of parameters: 1) the size of the alphabet (c), the maximum length of a sequence (string) in the input (l) and the number of rows of the microarray (r); and, 2) the size of the alphabet and the size of the border length (o). Furthermore, P-BMP is in FPT when parameterized by c and l. We complement our tractability results with corresponding hardness results

    Leveraging Administrative Data to Better Understand and Address Child Maltreatment: A Scoping Review of Data Linkage Studies

    Background This scoping review aimed to overview studies that used administrative data linkage in the context of child maltreatment to improve our understanding of the value that data linkage may confer for policy, practice, and research. Methods We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and ERIC electronic databases in June 2019 and May 2020 for studies that linked two or more datasets (at least one of which was administrative in nature) to study child maltreatment. We report findings with numerical and narrative summary. Results We included 121 studies, mainly from the United States or Australia and published in the past decade. Data came primarily from social services and health sectors, and linkage processes and data quality were often not described in sufficient detail to align with current reporting guidelines. Most studies were descriptive in nature and research questions addressed fell under eight themes: descriptive epidemiology, risk factors, outcomes, intergenerational transmission, predictive modelling, intervention/service evaluation, multi-sector involvement, and methodological considerations/advancements. Conclusions Included studies demonstrated the wide variety of ways in which data linkage can contribute to the public health response to child maltreatment. However, how research using linked data can be translated into effective service development and monitoring, or targeting of interventions, is underexplored in terms of privacy protection, ethics and governance, data quality, and evidence of effectiveness

    Comparative analysis of Calanus finmarchicus demography at locations around the Northeast Atlantic

    Standardized time-series sampling was carried out throughout 1997 at seven locations around the Northeast Atlantic to investigate regional variations in the seasonal demography of Calanus finmarchicus. Sites ranged from an inshore location in the North Sea, where C. finmarchicus formed only a small component of the zooplankton (2000 mgC m-2 during spring and summer). The internal consistency of the demographic time-series from each site was investigated by three partial models of life-cycle processes. In general, the demography of late copepodites could be accounted for by a relatively simple forecast model of stage development and diapause. However, there was a large discrepancy between nowcast estimates of egg production based on female abundance, temperature, and chlorophyll, and hindcast simulations of the egg production required to account for the observed abundance of early copepodite stages. The results point to a gap in our understanding of seasonal variations in rates of egg production and/or survival of nauplii. Overall, the population sampled at Weathership M appeared to be reasonably self-contained, but all other sites were reliant on invasion of overwintered stock in spring. At least two generations were observed at all but one site, but the extent to which these were generated by discrete bursts of egg production varied between sites and seemed to be partly dependent on the proximity to an overwintering location

    Don’t turn your back on the symptoms of psychosis : a proof-of-principle, quasi-experimental public health trial to reduce the duration of untreated psychosis in Birmingham, UK

    Background: Reducing the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) is an aspiration of international guidelines for first episode psychosis; however, public health initiatives have met with mixed results. Systematic reviews suggest that greater focus on the sources of delay within care pathways, (which will vary between healthcare settings) is needed to achieve sustainable reductions in DUP (BJP 198: 256-263; 2011). Methods/Design: A quasi-experimental trial, comparing a targeted intervention area with a ‘detection as usual’ area in the same city. A proof-of–principle trial, no a priori assumptions are made regarding effect size; key outcome will be an estimate of the potential effect size for a definitive trial. DUP and number of new cases will be collected over an 18-month period in target and control areas and compared; historical data on DUP collected in both areas over the previous three years, will serve as a benchmark. The intervention will focus on reducing two significant DUP component delays within the overall care pathway: delays within the mental health service and help-seeking delay. Discussion: This pragmatic trial will be the first to target known delays within the care pathway for those with a first episode of psychosis. If successful, this will provide a generalizable methodology that can be implemented in a variety of healthcare contexts with differing sources of delay.
