A Reflective and Quantitative Investigation of Relationships Between Aural Dictation, Sight Singing, Performance and Composition Skills

    Get PDF
This study combined two independent investigations into the relationships between aural dictation, sight singing, performance and composition skills. The first investigation involved the composition of a suite of piano pieces as a means of reflecting on the functional relationships between these skills. These reflections found evidence for strong relationships between skills. The second investigation involved results obtained from the NSW Board of Studies Music 2 2010 and 2011 HSC Examinations. Data was taken from the mandatory aural dictation, sight singing, performance and composition examination tasks. The statistical correlation between each task was examined with the highest correlations being between aural dictation and sight singing. Further analysis of top achieving students found that top results in multipart aural dictations were the best predictor of high achievement in other skill areas including sight singing, performance and composition

Microgravity: A Teacher's Guide With Activities in Science, Mathematics, and Technology

    Get PDF
The purpose of this curriculum supplement guide is to define and explain microgravity and show how microgravity can help us learn about the phenomena of our world. The front section of the guide is designed to provide teachers of science, mathematics, and technology at many levels with a foundation in microgravity science and applications. It begins with background information for the teacher on what microgravity is and how it is created. This is followed with information on the domains of microgravity science research; biotechnology, combustion science, fluid physics, fundamental physics, materials science, and microgravity research geared toward exploration. The background section concludes with a history of microgravity research and the expectations microgravity scientists have for research on the International Space Station. Finally, the guide concludes with a suggested reading list, NASA educational resources including electronic resources, and an evaluation questionnaire

Residual acceleration data on IML-1: Development of a data reduction and dissemination plan

    Get PDF
The research performed consisted of three stages: (1) identification of sensitive IML-1 experiments and sensitivity ranges by order of magnitude estimates, numerical modeling, and investigator input; (2) research and development towards reduction, supplementation, and dissemination of residual acceleration data; and (3) implementation of the plan on existing acceleration databases

Health Care Providers’ Consciences and Patients’ Needs: The Quest for Balance

    Get PDF
Recent controversies, such as the HHS rule on insurance coverage of contraceptive and sterilization services, raise fundamental and politically consequential questions. But they take place against a backdrop of longstanding tensions between claims of conscience and laws of broad scope and application—tensions well-known to experts but less so to public officials and most citizens. In a new paper, William Galston and Melissa Rogers provide a broad overview of conscience from a religious, philosophical and legal perspective, and then home in on conscience in the context of health care. The paper surveys current federal and state law and regulation governing the right to conscientiously object in the provision of health care, and explores the ongoing tensions between claims of conscience and calls for access. The paper concludes with suggestions for policymakers when shaping laws and regulations in this arena

Residual acceleration data on IML-1: Development of a data reduction and dissemination plan

    Get PDF
A residual acceleration data analysis plan is developed that will allow principal investigators of low-gravity experiments to efficiently process their experimental results in conjunction with accelerometer data. The basic approach consisted of the following program of research: (1) identification of sensitive experiments and sensitivity ranges by order of magnitude estimates, numerical modelling, and investigator input; (2) research and development towards reduction, supplementation, and dissemination of residual acceleration data; and (3) implementation of the plan on existing acceleration data bases

    DADiSP processing guide

    Get PDF
A guide for DADiSP software, intended for use by the Lambda Point Experiment (LPE) Team during and after the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP)-1 mission, is presented. DADiSP is a Data Analysis and Display Software developed and marketed by DSP Development Corporation, Cambridge, Massachusetts. This guide is intended to be used in addition to the DADiSP Worksheet User Manual and Reference Manual which are supplied by the company with the software. Technical support for DADiSP is available from DSP at (617) 577-1133. Access to DADiSP on Acceleration Characterization and Analysis Project (ACAP) EGSE is being provided to the LPE team during USMP-1 for off-line processing of SAMS data
