Likewise, the influence exerted by their locations on the process of space distribution in the city left deep and indelible marks in its urban design and contributed to the consolidation of segregated process to rebounding on the socio-spatial distribution of the city. The objective of this study is to relate three different approaches however interconnected of how the institutional architecture on exposed concrete have emerged and rebound on the city in the years 1970 to 1985, namely: the social, political and economic context surrounding the installation and transfer of the headquarters of the institutions for Santa Catarina.s capital or the location changes in of these within the city itself, the technical and conceptual issues that have acted as generators of architectural expression adopted in these buildings (structural recovery and use of exposed concrete and others) and, finally, the architecture itself, which in this case, testimony about the time, technique and ethics under which they were built. Thus, the first approach investigates the relationship between the historical, political and economic, national and local contexts, resulting in fertile ground for state facilities expansion, of the spatial distribution policy in cities (especially those who had character and potential for act as a central metropolitan area) and the territory occupation by governmental offices and institutional agencies. A second bias seeks to understand the origins of architectural language adopted in the projects for the headquarters of the institutions in Florianopolis in the period: building on a "monumental" (different from the scale of the city at that time), characterized by emphasis on basic structural elements (beams , collumns, slabs and porches) to assume the role of providing buildings stability, and generating architectural design aproach that define the spatial distribution of ending activities, as well as keep itself a symbolic and expressive power transmitted by the use of exposed concrete. In this context it is appropriate and necessary to account for the presence of aesthetic ideals and values that guided the architecture of São Paulo in the 1960s and the existence of shared ethical principles between the two productions. Derived from this discussion, was opened a brief debate on the relevance of growth and development of the cement industry during the 1960s and 1980s and what is its contribution to the consolidation of the architectural language of the exposed concrete - so dominant in the projects for the State offices in this period. We also discussed briefly about the controversial classification of buildings on exposed concrete produced in the country as heirs of the Brutalist movement in architecture. Finally we present briefly some of the key projects of institutional buildings built in Florianopolis between 1970 and 1985, when special attention is given to those three who were pioneers in the city, both for its architectural features and by their locations in new areas (landfills Center urban), or in areas still not cleared in Florianópolis 1970s (neighborhoods of the Trindade, Pantanal and Itacorubi)

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Foreign bodies inside the orbital cavity are rare. They can cause more or less serious complications, depending on their nature and size.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a case of a work-related accident involving a peri-orbital foreign body. The patient was a 50-year-old Caucasian man whose face was injured on the right side while he was working with an agricultural machine. On admission, he was fully conscious and did not have any neurological deficits. He had no loss of vision or ocular motility, but had a laceration of the lateral side of his right upper eyelid. A computed tomographic scan revealed a 6-cm-long bended metal object lodged in the lateral bulbar space of the right orbit. The patient recovered well after surgery and a course of antibiotic therapy.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The original aspects of this case are the singularity of the foreign body and its relative harmlessness in spite of its large size.</p

Comparative Genomic Analysis of the Streptococcus dysgalactiae Species Group: Gene Content, Molecular Adaptation, and Promoter Evolution

Comparative genomics of closely related bacterial species with different pathogenesis and host preference can provide a means of identifying the specifics of adaptive differences. Streptococcus dysgalactiae (SD) is comprised of two subspecies: S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis is both a human commensal organism and a human pathogen, and S. dysgalactiae subsp. dysgalactiae is strictly an animal pathogen. Here, we present complete genome sequences for both taxa, with analyses involving other species of Streptococcus but focusing on adaptation in the SD species group. We found little evidence for enrichment in biochemical categories of genes carried by each SD strain, however, differences in the virulence gene repertoire were apparent. Some of the differences could be ascribed to prophage and integrative conjugative elements. We identified approximately 9% of the nonrecombinant core genome to be under positive selection, some of which involved known virulence factors in other bacteria. Analyses of proteomes by pooling data across genes, by biochemical category, clade, or branch, provided evidence for increased rates of evolution in several gene categories, as well as external branches of the tree. Promoters were primarily evolving under purifying selection but with certain categories of genes evolving faster. Many of these fast-evolving categories were the same as those associated with rapid evolution in proteins. Overall, these results suggest that adaptation to changing environments and new hosts in the SD species group has involved the acquisition of key virulence genes along with selection of orthologous protein-coding loci and operon promoters

    Catamenial epilepsy: hormonal aspects

    No full text
The term catamenial epilepsy is used to describe the cyclical occurrence of seizure exacerbations during particular phases of menstrual cycle in women with preexisting epilepsy. Recent investigations have demonstrated the existence of at least three patterns of catamenial seizure exacerbation: perimenstrual and periovulatory in ovulatory cycle and entire luteal phase in anovulatory cycle. Cyclical changes in the circulating levels of estrogens (proconvulsant) and progesterone (anticonvulsant) play a central role in the development of catamenial epilepsy. Also, variations in concentrations of antiepileptic drugs across the menstrual cycle may contribute to increased seizure susceptibility. A variety of approaches have been proposed for the treatment of catamenial epilepsy

Hormonal and reproductive disturbances in epileptic male patients: Emergingissues

    No full text
Objective: To review the relationship between epilepsy, antiepileptic drugs and reproductive function. Methods: Pertinent articles were identified through a computer PubMed search. References of selected articles were hand searched for additional citations. Conclusions: Disturbances of reproductive endocrine hormones occur more frequently in men with epilepsy than in the general population; they manifest as loss of libido, impotence and infertility. These disturbances can be caused by epilepsy itself, by chronic use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) or both. AEDs can induce various hormonal abnormalities; in particular, the use of the liver enzyme inducing AEDs, such as phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepine, which increases serum sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) concentrations. This increase leads to diminished bioactivity of testosterone, which may result in diminished potency and thus reduced fertility. Men taking valproic acid have significantly higher dehydroepiandrosterone levels and lower gonadotropin concentration. Better understanding of molecular properties of AEDs and their effect on reproduction function will be the basis for on management of men suffering from epilepsy
