Archives Conservation Discussion Group 2011: Digitization and Its Effect on Conservation Treatment Decisions: How Has Wide-Spread Digitizing of Collections Changed Our Approach to Treatment?

    Get PDF
In line with this year’s AIC theme: ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS: ethical principles and critical thinking in conservation, The Archives Conservation Discussion Group 2011 examined the impact of providing digital collections in museums and libraries, and their conservation implications. Presentations and a subsequent discussion covered topics such as: How conservators are balancing ethical concerns, especially as dictated by the AIC Code of Ethics, with increased demand from digital projects. How conservators are keeping pace with large-scale or fast-paced digitizing projects, while maintaining standards. And the impact of limiting access to original materials by providing digital surrogates and its effect on treatment decisions

A Naturalistic Study of the Associations between Changes in Alcohol Problems, Spiritual Functioning and Psychiatric Symptoms

The study evaluated how spiritual and religious functioning (SRF), alcohol-related problems, and psychiatric symptoms change over the course of treatment and follow-up. Problem drinkers (n = 55, including 39 males and 16 females) in outpatient treatment were administered questionnaires at pretreatment, posttreatment, and follow up, which assessed two aspects of SRF (religious well-being and existential well-being), two aspects of alcohol misuse (severity and consequences), and two aspects of psychiatric symptoms (depression and anxiety). Significant improvements in SRF, psychiatric symptoms and alcohol misuse were observed from pretreatment to follow-up. Although SRF scores were significantly correlated with psychiatric symptoms at all three time points, improvement in the former did not predict improvement in the latter. When measured at the same time points, SRF scores were not correlated with the measures of alcohol misuse. However, improvement in SRF (specifically in existential well-being) over the course of treatment was predictive of improvement in the alcohol misuse measures at follow-up. These results suggest that the association between SRF, emotional problems, and alcohol misuse is complex. They further suggest that patients who improve spiritual functioning over the course of treatment are more likely to experience improvement in drinking behavior and alcohol-related problems after treatment has ended. Correlates of Depressive Symptoms in Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer

    Get PDF
Purpose: The impact of cancer in childhood among adult survivors needs to be studied to see how being diagnosed with cancer in childhood is associated with mental health in adulthood. Specifically this study will examine depressive symptoms. If there are negative effects such as depressive symptoms, it is important to know what may help reduce them such as support and counseling. Methods: This is a quantitative study where 49 adult survivors of childhood cancer participated in an online survey. They were recruited from forums for cancer survivors and with snowball sampling. Results: Through correlation analyses and ANCOVA, it was found that counseling helps reduce depressive symptoms in adult survivors of childhood cancer. Other predictors were not found to be significant and would be better assessed with a larger sample

A Tale of Two Governors: The 1996 Gubernatorial Succession Crisis

The state of Arkansas is no stranger to succession crises. As early as the Reconstruction era, struggles for power emerged, and controversies surrounding the appropriate use of power among acting governors have kept the issue unsettled. One such instance, the Arkansas gubernatorial succession crisis of 1996 became yet another episode in this saga. While never fully examined, the succession crisis did influence modern politics in the state. There are two sides to every story: Well, I wanted to let you know I\u27ve decided not to resign, Jim Guy Tucker said to Mike Huckabee only five minutes before the inauguration of the new governor, and Huckabee responded, I\u27m supposed to take the oath of office in five minutes. I respectfully ask that you reconsider this action, not only to keep your word, but for the welfare of the state of Arkansas. The story from both sides, the Governor at the time, Jim Guy Tucker, and succeeding Governor, Mike Huckabee, will be presented in a synthesis approach; this paper is meant to present an objective and balanced view of the time leading to the crisis event itself on July 15, 1996. Arkansas\u27s succession crisis involved Governor Tucker deciding not to resign at the last minute, as he had previously promised, following an indictment linked to Whitewater investigations. This decision left Huckabee and other members of the government in a difficult position where there were times in which it was unclear as to who was legally governor. Although the 1996 succession crisis was resolved in a few hours, other episodes of seizing power and unclear succession are found in Arkansas\u27s history. The Brooks-Baxter War of 1872 clearly follows many of the same patterns as the Huckabee-Tucker crisis

This report investigates findings arising from a variety of forms of feedback provided by the first cohort of participants (2012-2013) in Cumbria Partnership Foundation Trust’s “Leadership Development” Programme (LDP). The report summarises both quantitative and qualitative feedback, and synthesises findings to provide a more three-dimensional overview of participant experience and systemic impact. Feedback reflects, throughout, the diversity of the participating cohort in terms of professional roles and levels of seniority
