    A Chemist in the Senate: Edwin Fremont Ladd, 1921-1925

    Edwin Fremont Ladd, a native of :Maine, migrated to North Dakota in 1890 to join the chemistry faculty of the Agricultural College. In the following three decades, his work in the pure-food crusade and in the fight for fair grain grading and reasonable rail rates earned him a reputation for personal courage and devotion to agriculture. His reputation led the Nonpartisan League to endorse him for the United States Senate in 1920. Following his victory over Senator Asle J. Gronna in the Republican primary, Ladd defeated his Democratic opponent in the general election. From his entry into the Senate in 1921 to his death in 1925, Ladd continued to demonstrate both his courage and his devotion to agriculture. He courageously resisted attempts to suppress 1the Teapot Dome investigation. He stood firm on his unpopular advocacies of recognition of Soviet Russia and private development of Muscle Shoals. As an advocate of aid to agriculture, Ladd supported high agricultural tariffs, increased appropriations for agricultural research, the building of a St. Lawrence Seaway, and the expansion of agricultural credit. He joined the Farm Bloc and generally supported its attempts to improve· agricultural conditions. Ladd\u27s independence and strength of conviction often brought him to oppose administration policies. He was soon recognized as a rebel and was seldom consulted on appointments. His dissatisfaction with the Republican administrations led him to support Robert N. LaFollette\u27s presidential candidacy in 1924. He was subsequently expelled from the Republican caucus and stripped of his seniority privileges

    General Covariance in Quantum Gravity at a Lifshitz Point

    In the minimal formulation of gravity with Lifshitz-type anisotropic scaling, the gauge symmetries of the system are foliation-preserving diffeomorphisms of spacetime. Consequently, compared to general relativity, the spectrum contains an extra scalar graviton polarization. Here we investigate the possibility of extending the gauge group by a local U(1) symmetry to "nonrelativistic general covariance." This extended gauge symmetry eliminates the scalar graviton, and forces the coupling constant λ\lambda in the kinetic term of the minimal formulation to take its relativistic value, λ=1\lambda=1.     Non-equilibrium two-phase coexistence in a confined granular layer

    We report the observation of the homogenous nucleation of crystals in a dense layer of steel spheres confined between two horizontal plates vibrated vertically. Above a critical vibration amplitude, two-layer crystals with square symmetry were found to coexist in steady state with a surrounding granular liquid. By analogy to equilibrium hard sphere systems, the phase behavior can be explained through entropy maximization.     The Psychological Manipulation of the Consumer-Patient Population through Direct-to-Consumer Prescription Drug Advertising.

    Drug direct-to-consumer advertisements manipulates the public through the manufacturer’s marketing practices. The goal of pharmaceutical companies is to create consumer demand for their products, and they achieve this goal by showing advertisements that portray their products as life-enhancing. This leads to an exponential increase in demand for and spending on these pharmaceutical drugs. This increased promotion of direct-to-consumer advertising affects the physician-patient relationship, while drug companies face little, if any, liability. Drug companies expend significant efforts to obtain patents to keep their products competitive on the market, and to prevent customers from switching to an inexpensive generic drug. The author explains that the learned intermediary doctrine shields drug manufacturers from liability for failure to warn claims brought by patient-recipients of their products, because the medication was only available to the consumer through a physician’s prescription. This doctrine insulates drug companies from liability because they are not held to the same regulations and penalties as other sellers who advertise directly to the public. The comment proposes that pharmaceutical companies be required by FDA guidelines to consult with the medical community before launching a drug advertising campaign. It also proposes eliminating existing loopholes in the drug patent system, as this would allow more time and resources for research and development. Finally, the author proposes reevaluating the effectiveness of the learned intermediary doctrine and shifting the potential for liability to the pharmaceutical industry. The current system of direct-to-consumer drug advertisements is manipulative to consumers and damaging to the physician-patient relationship all while shielding the pharmaceutical industry from liability

    Adaptation to the Edge of Chaos in the Self-Adjusting Logistic Map

    Self-adjusting, or adaptive systems have gathered much recent interest. We present a model for self-adjusting systems which treats the control parameters of the system as slowly varying, rather than constant. The dynamics of these parameters is governed by a low-pass filtered feedback from the dynamical variables of the system. We apply this model to the logistic map and examine the behavior of the control parameter. We find that the parameter leaves the chaotic regime. We observe a high probability of finding the parameter at the boundary between periodicity and chaos. We therefore find that this system exhibits adaptation to the edge of chaos.Comment: 3 figure

    Discharge planning, self-management, and community support: Strategies to avoid psychiatric rehospitalisation from a service user perspective

    Abstract Objective Psychiatric rehospitalisation is often seen as a negative outcome in terms of healthcare quality and cost, as well as potentially hindering the process of recovery. The purpose of our study was to explore psychiatric rehospitalisation from a service-user perspective, paying attention to how rehospitalisation can be avoided. Method Eight focus groups, including a total of 55 mental health service users, were conducted in six European countries (Austria, Finland, Italy, Norway, Romania, and Slovenia). The results were analysed using systematic text condensation. Results All participants had been in touch with mental health services for at least one year, and had experienced more than one psychiatric hospitalisation. Participants emphasised the importance of discharge planning and psychoeducation both during and after the hospital stay, as well as the benefits of structured plans, coping strategies, self-monitoring techniques, and close contact with local community services.Social contacts and meaningful activities were also considered to be critical, as was support from peers and family members. Conclusion Efforts to avoid psychiatric rehospitalisation should include actions that support a functional day-to-day life, improve coping strategies, and build on cross-sectoral collaboration. Practice implications The study emphasises the need for psychoeducational and psychosocial interventions, starting already during the inpatient stay

    Complementary measurements have been performed for the level density and gamma strength function in 162-Dy using inelastic 3-He scattering. Comparing these results to previous measurements using the 163-Dy(3-He,alpha) reaction, reveals that the measured quantities above 1.5 MeV do not depend significantly on the nuclear reaction chosen.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figure

    Introduction. Canines are the principal domestic reservoirs of visceral leishmaniasis in both the Old and New World. The development of highly sensitive and quantitative methods, such as real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction for measurement of canine cytokines has not been exploited in studies of visceral leishmaniasis.Objective. To standardize the relative quantification of canine IFN-g, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12p40 and IL-12p35 using real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction.Materials and methods. RNA was isolated from PBMCs from 1 year–old foxhounds and cultured with or without Con A, LPS orStaphylococcus aureus extract. This RNA was used in one-step real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction to optimize the concentrations of the cytokine primers and probes, generate standard curves for each cytokine, confirm equivalent amplification efficiency of cytokine and normalizer (18S rRNA) RNA, and to quantify the expression of the cytokine RNA. The comparative Ct method was used to determine the relative levels of gene expression in the samples, expressed as the fold-increase relative to the control samples.Results. The regression coefficient for the standard curves and the amplification efficiencies of the cytokine and normalizer RNA indicated that the quantification was reliable over a broad concentration range of input RNA. Relative to control cells, activation of PBMCs led to increased expression of IFN-g (132-fold), IL-4 (8.8-fold), IL-10 (7.2-fold), and IL-12p40 (275-fold). Basal expression of IL-12p35 was also detected.Conclusion. This approach provides several advantages over conventional assays for cytokine measurement and can be exploited in the study of the immunopathogenesis and immunity in canine leishmaniasis.Introducción. Los caninos son el principal reservorio domestico de la leishmaniasis visceral en el Nuevo y Viejo mundo. La reacción en cadena de la polimerasa de transcriptasa reversa en tiempo real para la medición de citocinas caninas no ha sido implementada para el estudio de la leishmaniasis visceral.Objetivo. Estandarizar la cuantificación relativa de IFN-g, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12p40 y IL-12p35 caninas utilizando reacción en cadena de la polimerasa de transcriptasa reversa en tiempo real.Materiales y métodos. Células mononucleares de sangre periférica de perros Fox-Hound fueron estimuladas con ConA, LPS y extracto de Staphylococcus aureus. El ARN fue utilizado en la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa de transcriptasa reversa en tiempo real de un solo paso para optimizar las concentraciones de iniciadores y sondas especificas de cada citocina, generar curvas estándar, confirmar la eficiencia de amplificación de las citocinas y del normalizador (18S ARNr) y cuantificar la expresión de ARN. El método comparativo Ct fue utilizado para determinar los niveles relativos de expresión de ARN en las muestras, expresado como el incremento en el número de veces comparado con los controles.Resultados. El coeficiente de regresión para las curvas estándar y las eficiencias de amplificación de las citocinas y el normalizador, indicaron que la cuantificación fue confiable en un amplio rango de concentraciones de ARN. La activación de células mononucleares de sangre periférica resultó en un incremento en la expresión de IFN-g (132), IL-4 (8.8), IL-10 (7,2), y IL-12p40 (275), relativo a células control. La expresión basal de IL-12p35 fue también detectada.Conclusión. Esta metodología, comparada con los métodos convencionales disponibles para la medición de citocinas, ofrece varias ventajas y podría ser utilizada en estudios sobre inmunopatogenia e inmunidad en leishmaniasis visceral canina

    Duplex real-time reverse transcriptase PCR to determine cytokine mRNA expression in a hamster model of New World cutaneous leishmaniasis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Syrian hamster, <it>Mesocricetus auratus</it>, has distinct immunological features and is uniquely susceptible to intracellular pathogens. Studies in hamsters are limited by the relative unavailability of tools to conduct immunological studies. To address this limitation we developed duplex real-time reverse transcriptase (RT) PCR assays for the relative quantification of the mRNAs of hamster cytokines, chemokines, and related immune response molecules.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Real-time RT-PCR primers and probes were synthesized for analysis of interleukin (IL)-4, IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-10, IL-12p40, TGF-β, IL-13, IL-21, chemokine ligand (CCL) 22, CCL17, Chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 4 and FoxP3 expression. Standard curves and validation experiments were performed for each real-time RT-PCR assay, allowing us to use the comparative Ct (2<sup>-ΔΔCt</sup>) method to calculate changes in gene expression. Application of the real-time RT PCR assays to a biological model was demonstrated by comparing mRNA expression in skin and lymph node tissues between uninfected and <it>Leishmania panamensis </it>infected hamsters.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The duplex real-time RT PCR assays provide a powerful approach for the quantification of cytokine transcription in hamsters, and their application to a model of cutaneous leishmaniasis suggests that a balanced type 1 and type 2 cytokine response contributes to the chronic, nonprogressive course of disease. These new molecular tools will further facilitate investigation into the mechanisms of disease in the hamster, not only for models of leishmaniasis, but also for other viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections.</p
