Laser-Doppler gas-velocity instrument
Three-D instrument using a laser light source measures both turbulence and mean velocity of subsonic and supersonic gas flows. This instrument is based on the measurement of the Doppler frequency shift of light waves scattered by moving particles in the gas stream

Thermal diffusion of supersonic solitons in an anharmonic chain of atoms
We study the non-equilibrium diffusion dynamics of supersonic lattice
solitons in a classical chain of atoms with nearest-neighbor interactions
coupled to a heat bath. As a specific example we choose an interaction with
cubic anharmonicity. The coupling between the system and a thermal bath with a
given temperature is made by adding noise, delta-correlated in time and space,
and damping to the set of discrete equations of motion. Working in the
continuum limit and changing to the sound velocity frame we derive a
Korteweg-de Vries equation with noise and damping. We apply a collective
coordinate approach which yields two stochastic ODEs which are solved
approximately by a perturbation analysis. This finally yields analytical
expressions for the variances of the soliton position and velocity. We perform
Langevin dynamics simulations for the original discrete system which fully
confirm the predictions of our analytical calculations, namely noise-induced
superdiffusive behavior which scales with the temperature and depends strongly
on the initial soliton velocity. A normal diffusion behavior is observed for
very low-energy solitons where the noise-induced phonons also make a
significant contribution to the soliton diffusion.Comment: Submitted to PRE. Changes made: New simulations with a different
method of soliton detection. The results and conclusions are not different
from previous version. New appendixes containing information about the system
energy and soliton profile
Large Predicted Self-Field Critical Current Enhancements In Superconducting Strips Using Magnetic Screens
A transport current distribution over a wide superconducting sheet is shown
to strongly change in a presence of bulk magnetic screens of a soft magnet with
a high permeability. Depending on the geometry, the effect may drastically
suppress or protect the Meissner state of the sheet through the enhancement or
suppression of the edge barrier critical current. The total transport current
in the magnetically screened Meissner state is expected to compete with the
critical current of the flux-filled sheet only for samples whose critical
current is initially essentially controlled by the edge barrier effect.Comment: 6 figure
Infection of laboratory-colonized Anopheles darlingi mosquitoes by Plasmodium vivax.
Anopheles darlingi Root is the most important malaria vector in the Amazonia region of South America. However, continuous propagation of An. darlingi in the laboratory has been elusive, limiting entomological, genetic/genomic, and vector-pathogen interaction studies of this mosquito species. Here, we report the establishment of an An. darlingi colony derived from wild-caught mosquitoes obtained in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon region of Iquitos in the Loreto Department. We show that the numbers of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults continue to rise at least to the F6 generation. Comparison of feeding Plasmodium vivax ex vivo of F4 and F5 to F1 generation mosquitoes showed the comparable presence of oocysts and sporozoites, with numbers that corresponded to blood-stage asexual parasitemia and gametocytemia, confirming P. vivax vectorial capacity in the colonized mosquitoes. These results provide new avenues for research on An. darlingi biology and study of An. darlingi-Plasmodium interactions
Spin-dependent effective interactions for halo nuclei
We discuss the spin-dependence of the effective two-body interactions
appropriate for three-body computations. The only reasonable choice seems to be
the fine and hyperfine interactions known for atomic electrons interacting with
the nucleus. One exception is the nucleon-nucleon interaction imposing a
different type of symmetry. We use the two-neutron halo nucleus 11Li as
illustration. We demonstrate that models with the wrong spin-dependence are
basically without predictive power. The Pauli forbidden core and valence states
must be consistently treated.Comment: TeX file, 6 pages, 3 postscript figure
Numerical electrokinetics
A new lattice method is presented in order to efficiently solve the
electrokinetic equations, which describe the structure and dynamics of the
charge cloud and the flow field surrounding a single charged colloidal sphere,
or a fixed array of such objects. We focus on calculating the electrophoretic
mobility in the limit of small driving field, and systematically linearise the
equations with respect to the latter. This gives rise to several subproblems,
each of which is solved by a specialised numerical algorithm. For the total
problem we combine these solvers in an iterative procedure. Applying this
method, we study the effect of the screening mechanism (salt screening vs.
counterion screening) on the electrophoretic mobility, and find a weak
non-trivial dependence, as expected from scaling theory. Furthermore, we find
that the orientation of the charge cloud (i. e. its dipole moment) depends on
the value of the colloid charge, as a result of a competition between
electrostatic and hydrodynamic effects.Comment: accepted for publication in Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

On variations of foF2 and F-spread before strong earthquakes in Japan
International audienceThe statistical analysis of the variations of the dayly-mean frequency of the maximum ionospheric electron density foF2 is performed in connection with the occurrence of (more than 60) earthquakes with magnitudes M>6.0, depths hRfoF2 decreases before the earthquakes. One day before the shock the decrease amounts to about 5%. The statistical reliability of this phenomenon is obtained to be better than 0.95. Further, the variations of the occurrence probability of the turbulization of the F-layer (F spread) are investigated for (more than 260) earthquakes with M>5.5, hRfoF2 analysis, the Wolf number is less than 100 and the index SKp is smaller than 30, and in case of the F-spread study a Wolf number less than 80 and SKp smaller than 17 are chosen
