The role of endothelial cells in hematologic malignancies

    Get PDF
Vascular neoformation is an essential event in the development of the human body. In this phase vascular networks undergo expansion. Mature endothelial cells constitute the structure of vessel walls so endothelial cells from bone marrow migrate to sites of vascular neoformation with subsequent differentiation as mature endothelial cells (endothelial progenitor cells). Physiopathological and pathological processes such as cancer use angiogenesis as an important component for growth. Studies correlate angiogenesis with aggressive tumors for some types of tumors, including hematological malignancies, thereby highlighting the importance of anti-angiogenic therapy

Accessible, cost-effective, and scalable mental health interventions are limited, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where disparities between mental health needs and services are greatest. Microinterventions (ie, brief, stand-alone, or digital approaches) aim to provide immediate reprieve and enhancements in mental health states and offer a novel and scalable framework for embedding evidence-based mental health promotion techniques into digital environments. Body image is a global public health issue that increases young peoples' risk of developing more severe mental and physical health issues. Embedding body image microinterventions into digital environments is one avenue for providing young people with immediate and short-term reprieve and protection from the negative exposure effects associated with social media. This 2-armed, fully remote, and preregistered randomized controlled trial assessed the impact of a body image chatbot containing microinterventions on Brazilian adolescents' state and trait body image and associated well-being outcomes. Geographically diverse Brazilian adolescents aged 13-18 years (901/1715, 52.54% girls) were randomized into the chatbot or an assessment-only control condition and completed web-based self-assessments at baseline, immediately after the intervention time frame, and at 1-week and 1-month follow-ups. The primary outcomes were mean change in state (at chatbot entry and at the completion of a microintervention technique) and trait body image (before and after the intervention), with the secondary outcomes being mean change in affect (state and trait) and body image self-efficacy between the assessment time points. Most participants who entered the chatbot (258/327, 78.9%) completed ≥1 microintervention technique, with participants completing an average of 5 techniques over the 72-hour intervention period. Chatbot users experienced small significant improvements in primary (state: P<.001, Cohen d=0.30, 95% CI 0.25-0.34; and trait body image: P=.02, Cohen d range=0.10, 95% CI 0.01-0.18, to 0.26, 95% CI 0.13-0.32) and secondary outcomes across various time points (state: P<.001, Cohen d=0.28, 95% CI 0.22-0.33; trait positive affect: P=.02, Cohen d range=0.15, 95% CI 0.03-0.27, to 0.23, 95% CI 0.08-0.37; negative affect: P=.03, Cohen d range=-0.16, 95% CI -0.30 to -0.02, to -0.18, 95% CI -0.33 to -0.03; and self-efficacy: P=.02, Cohen d range=0.14, 95% CI 0.03-0.25, to 0.19, 95% CI 0.08-0.32) relative to the control condition. Intervention benefits were moderated by baseline levels of concerns but not by gender. This is the first large-scale randomized controlled trial assessing a body image chatbot among Brazilian adolescents. Intervention attrition was high (531/858, 61.9%) and reflected the broader digital intervention literature; barriers to engagement were discussed. Meanwhile, the findings support the emerging literature that indicates microinterventions and chatbot technology are acceptable and effective web-based service provisions. This study also offers a blueprint for accessible, cost-effective, and scalable digital approaches that address disparities between health care needs and provisions in low- and middle-income countries.

A list of land plants of Parque Nacional do Caparaó, Brazil, highlights the presence of sampling gaps within this protected area

Brazilian protected areas are essential for plant conservation in the Atlantic Forest domain, one of the 36 global biodiversity hotspots. A major challenge for improving conservation actions is to know the plant richness, protected by these areas. Online databases offer an accessible way to build plant species lists and to provide relevant information about biodiversity. A list of land plants of “Parque Nacional do Caparaó” (PNC) was previously built using online databases and published on the website "Catálogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservação do Brasil." Here, we provide and discuss additional information about plant species richness, endemism and conservation in the PNC that could not be included in the List. We documented 1,791 species of land plants as occurring in PNC, of which 63 are cited as threatened (CR, EN or VU) by the Brazilian National Red List, seven as data deficient (DD) and five as priorities for conservation. Fifity-one species were possible new ocurrences for ES and MG states

INTRODUCTION: Body composition is an important metric in pregnant women for assessing risk of metabolic disorders such as gestational diabetes mellitus. The InBody (IB) 720 and InBody 230 (InBody, Seoul, South Korea) are multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices used to estimate body composition. The IB720 is a research-grade device while the IB230 is a portable device. Previous studies have assessed the agreement of BIA devices in general population adults but not in pregnant women. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the reliability of the IB230 and IB720 to measure total body water (TBW), total lean mass (TLM), and total fat mass (TFM) in pregnant women. METHODS: Thirty-two pregnant women (27.0±7.8 years; BMI 31.8±4.5 kg/m2, 68.8% Caucasian) were evaluated using the IB720 and the IB230 at 19-21 weeks gestation. Total body water (TBW), total lean mass (TLM), and total fat mass (TFM) were estimated and compared using Pearson’s correlation coefficients. RESULTS: Average TBW was 34.8±5.1kg from IB720 and 34.9±5.41kg from IB230. Average TLM was 47.7±7.0kg from IB720 and 45.6±11.4kg from IB230. Average TFM was 34.7±15.2kg from IB720 and 34.6±14.7kg from IB230. Measures from IB720 and IB230 were strongly correlated for TBW, TLM, and TFM (r = 0.994, 0.663, 0.998, respectively, p\u3c0.01 for all (2-tailed)). CONCLUSION: The IB720 and IB230 produced similar measurements for TBW, TLM, and TFM. The data suggest that the portable and more accessible IB230 was in agreement with the IB720 and can be used to estimate body composition in pregnant women
