    Review of the effects of anesthetic agents used as premedication for patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy with diagnoses of bipolar disorder or major depression on convulsion, recovery period, and hemodynamic parameters

    Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of anesthetic agents used as premedication in patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for diagnoses of bipolar disorder or major depression in terms of convulsion, recovery period, and hemodynamic parameters. Materials and Method: This retrospective study was carried out by screening the anesthesia forms of patients in a psychiatry clinic in Turkey. Results: Researchers reviewed 104 patient files, of which 39 fit the inclusion criteria. 26 patients were given premedication; 13 patients were not given premedication. The study found a significant difference between the group to which dexmedetomidine was given and the non-premedication group in terms of mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate. A significant difference was also found between the group to which midazolam was given and the non-premedication group in terms of peripheral oxygen saturation. Conclusion: Premedication before ECT may be used to reduce the side effects after ECT without affecting convulsions and the recovery period

    Measuring the Systematic Risk of IPO’s Using Empirical Bayes Estimates in the Thinly Traded Istanbul Stock Exchange

    The systematic risk of IPO’s in the thinly traded Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) are estimated using Empirical Bayes Estimators (EBE). The sectors that the firms belong to, provide the priors. Comparisons are made with OLS estimators across different estimation and forecasting periods. Two benchmark criteria are used; sum of squared residuals and sum of absolute residuals. The application requires some complicated manipulation of the theory where some inferiors of the ordinary Bayesian approach are avoided. Results show that using the EBE procedure, betas can be calculated with greater precision than OLS. This enables us to evaluate IPO’s on similar intuition with other stocks, i.e. in a portfolio context rather than in isolation.Empirical Bayes method; Beta estimation; Forecasting; Capital Asset Pricing Model; Initial public offering

    Total least squares registration of 3D surfaces

    Co-registration of point clouds of partially scanned objects is the first step of the 3D modeling workflow. The aim of coregistration is to merge the overlapping point clouds by estimating the spatial transformation parameters. In computer vision and photogrammetry domain one of the most popular methods is the ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm and its variants. There exist the 3D Least Squares (LS) matching methods as well (Gruen and Akca, 2005). The co-registration methods commonly use the least squares (LS) estimation method in which the unknown transformation parameters of the (floating) search surface is functionally related to the observation of the (fixed) template surface. Here, the stochastic properties of the search surfaces are usually omitted. This omission is expected to be minor and does not disturb the solution vector significantly. However, the a posteriori covariance matrix will be affected by the neglected uncertainty of the function values of the search surface. . This causes deterioration in the realistic precision estimates. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose a method where the stochastic properties of both the observations and the parameters are considered under an errors-in-variables (EIV) model. The experiments have been carried out using diverse laser scanning data sets and the results of EIV with the ICP and the conventional LS matching methods have been compared.Publisher's Versio

    Comparison of Somatotype Values of Football Players in Two Professional League Football Teams According to the Positions

    This study compared the somatotype values of football players according to their playing positions. The study aimed to determine the physical profiles of players and to analyze the relationships between somatotypes and playing positions. Study participants were members of two teams in the Turkey Professional Football League, Gençlerbirligi Sports Team (GB) (N=24) and Gençlerbirligi Oftas Sports Team (GBO) (N=24). Anthropometric measurements of the players were performed according to techniques suggested by the Anthropometric Standardization Reference Manual (ASRM) and International Biological Program (IBP). In somatotype calculations, triceps, subscapular, supraspinale and calf skinfold thickness, humerus bicondylar, femur bicondylar, biceps circumference, calf circumference and body weight and height were used. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the Graph Pad prism Version 5.00 for Windows (Graph Pad Software, San Diego California USA); somatotype calculations and analyses used the Somatotype 1.1 program and graphical representations of the results were produced. Analysis of non-parametric (two independent samples) Mann-Whitney U Test of the player data showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the two teams. The measurements indicated that, when all of the GB and GBO players were evaluated collectively, their average somatotypes were balanced mesomorph. The somatotypes of GBO goalkeepers were generally ectomorphic mesomorph; GB goalkeepers were balanced mesomorphic, although they were slightly endomorphic

    MFM imaging of expanded austenite formed on 304 SS and CoCrMo alloys

    New data related to the magnetic nature of the expanded austenite layers on CoCrMo and austenitic stainless steel by nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) are presented. Implantations were performed in the temperature range between 300 and 550°C for a fixed processing time of 1h. Magnetic properties, nitrogen distribution, implanted layer phases, and surface topography were studied with a combination of experimental techniques involving magnetic force microscopy, SIMS, XRD, SEM and AFM. As a function of the processing temperature, phase evolution stage for both alloys follows the same trend: (1) initial stage of the expanded phase formation, γN; (2) its full development; and (3) its decomposition into CrN precipitates and the Cr-depleted matrix, fcc γ-(Co, Mo) for CoCrMo and bcc α-(Fe, Ni) for 304 SS. MFM imaging reveals distinct, stripe-like ferromagnetic domains for the fully developed expanded austenite layers both on CoCrMo and 304 SS alloys. Weak domain structures are observed for the CoCrMo samples treated at low and high processing temperatures. The images also provide strong evidence for grain orientation dependence of magnetic properties. The ferromagnetic state for the γN phase observed here is mainly linked to large lattice expansions due to high N content

She gave a history of emergent uterine curettage for severe uncontrolled pre-eclampsia in the 24th week of her second gestation which was 10 years before. Two days after the procedure, the patient complained of peripheral visual field defect in her both eyes which persisted until her last presentation. Her best-corrected visual acuity, color vision, intraocular pressures, and anterior segment examination findings were normal bilaterally. Fundus examination showed a normal optic nerve head with reduction of arteriole to vein ratio in both eyes. Humphrey Field Analyzer revealed a bilateral concentric visual field defect. Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP) and Electroretinography (ERG) were within normal limits in both eyes. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was normal.Discussion: Herein, we presented a case of permanent concentric visual field defect which developed as a complication of severe uncontrolled pre-eclampsia.
