Systemic objective test in medical biochemistry: Part 1-metabolism of carbohydrates

    Get PDF
A very important element of the teaching plan is students’ assessment. Assessment should be very objective and backed up with feedback. A necessary condition for this type of evaluation is the formation of questions. The questions should lead the thinking process of the students with skills and clarity of thought. In this way, these questions will serve as clear ideas and help to develop the imagination and the research. Such innovation provides systematic evaluation, which is based on systematic diagram. Testing plays an important role in this system. The objective test is created in a way that a different estimator that assesses independently will achieve the same results for the introduced level of knowledge and abilities based on true answers. In comparison with the traditional objective test, the systemic objective test includes many demands that are completely structured; it covers a huge part of the educational schedule, and measures high levels of education (synthesis, analysis and estimation). In this article, we will introduce STFQs, SMCQs, SSQs, SSQs, ASQs, and SCQs as examples of the systemic objective test in medical biochemistry

Development of an OpenCL wrapper in C#

    Get PDF
OpenCL is a framework for programming and executing programs on several types of processing elements. Such devices include graphics processing units and general-purpose processors. Its API provides the means for building an executing such programs. It can be used directly in languages that compile to native code as the implementations are provided as native libraries. Languages such as C# and Java cannot use these libraries directly as they execute in a virtual machine. Because OpenCL does not provide implementations for virtual machines, they require a wrapper interface. Such an interface must expose native functions as functions inside the virtual machine. This bachelor's thesis is going to go over the implementation of a wrapper library for C# which exposes the native functions as well as provides an objective oriented approach for the API

CLIMATE DYNAMICS OF SOUTHERN REGION OF MOZAMBIQUE: STATISTICS AND FOURIER ANALYSIS

In this study, we intend to understand the climatic behavior of the southern region of Mozambique in the face of the evidences of climate change at global level. Time series of precipitation and extreme temperatures related to 1960-2018 were used. We performed the characterization of the rainy season behavior, the analysis of periodicity and long-term variability and the determination of the trend of fluctuations in precipitation and extreme temperatures. The results of the analyzes are related to the current global climate observations and projections contained in the fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR5). In particular, the signal of climate change in Mozambique is visible. Precipitation did not show a significant trend in its variability. However, a slight decrease is noticeable in the provinces of Gaza and Inhambane. The rainy season showed a tendency to a late start and an early end, resulting in a decrease of the season length. Extreme temperatures, on the other hand, showed a clear upward trend, with the increase being more pronounced for the minimum temperature than for the maximum temperature. The maximum temperature increased by about 0.65 °C and the minimum temperature increased by about 1.2 °C during the analyzed period. In turn, the diurnal temperature range has been decreasing due to the rapid increase in the minimum temperature compared to the maximum

Rental Rate as An Alternative Pricing for Islamic home financing: An empirical investigation on the UK Market

Purpose This paper aims to contribute to the banking and housing market literature by proposing an alternative measure of rate of return for Islamic banks that is based on the rental rate of the property. This alternative Islamic mortgage pricing mechanism could be adopted by Islamic banks as a replacement for mortgage rates if it is found to be independent from any form of interest rates as required by Islamic law. Design/methodology/approach By investigating the short run and long run dynamics between rental price index (RPI) and the proposed Islamic Rental Rate (RR-I) and, three selected macroeconomic indicators in the UK via autoregressive distributed lag model, the authors examine the link between RPI, RR-I and the real economy. Findings The findings provide evidence that while RPI in the UK is significantly related to three leading macroeconomic variables, namely, gross domestic product (GDP), real effective exchange rate and interest rates measures, while RR-I is only impacted by changes in GDP. More importantly, the authors show that there is no short or long run dynamics between the rental rate and any form of interest rates. Research limitations/implications This paper did not attempt to investigate the impact of the physical attributes of the rental property to formalize the model describing the relationship between RPI and RR-I. Also, other macroeconomic factors like household income growth, risk, house value growth rate and taxation could be included in future models. Practical implications As Rental Rate is not linked to the macroeconomic determinants, it is therefore more stable, resilient and sustainable and, at the same time, making the financing less risky for both parties, as they are less susceptible to economic vulnerabilities. Social implications Some calculations incorporating the proposed RR-I can also be extended to the pricing of products based on other contracts such as Tawarruq, Bai Bithaman Ajil or even Murabahah for a fairer and just pricing to both the banks and customers. Originality/value The results suggest that Islamic banks should consider incorporating the proposed rental rate (RR-I) when pricing their home financing products, as this will lead to less dependence on interest rates for benchmarking. In addition, using the proposed rental rate (RR-I) reduces the exposure to the subjective evaluation by property valuators and speculative macroeconomic elements. </jats:sec

Systemic approaches to teaching and learning a module of Biochemistry [SATL-BC]

    Get PDF
In this article, we introduce the application of SATL in the subject of medical biochemistry. The strategy of this method is based on the collection, organization, and presentation of the map of concepts through the interactive system in the module of which the relations between the concepts and issues will be clarified. The main structural element of the SATL is the systemic diagram which bears all the attributes of a closed concept map. The systemic diagrams are created on the basis of the combination of the concepts that students already have and what they acquire through the study of the modules. The construction of systemic diagram helps students to understand the conceptual framework of the subject. Through the application of systemic methodology, students will study not only concepts, principles, and various metabolic procedures that occur in the organism they will also understand the vital role of biochemistry in medicine and how biochemistry principles are applied in everyday professional practices.[AJCE, 3(1), January 2013

    Syntheses of Some Binaphthalenes

    Get PDF
Syntheses of binaphthalene derivatives are described with the particular aim of connecting two naphthalene units in an unsymmetrical manner. 1.2\u27-Binaphthalenes were formed in a reaction between 2.3-dichloro-1.4-naphthoquinone and 1- or 2- naphthol, but the reaction can proceed further to pentacyclic quinones. Some methoxynaphthalenes were treated with vanadium oxytrichloride to give the corresponding binaphthalene derivatives, Some syntheses of unsymmetrically substituted binaphthalenes from 2-naphthol and its methoxy analog are also described

Impaired Skeletal Muscle Repair after Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Mice

Ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury can induce skeletal muscle fibre death and subsequent regeneration. By 14 days, absolute and specific maximal forces and fatigue resistance in ischemic/reperfused soleus muscles were still reduced (−89%, −81%, and −75%, resp.) as compared to control muscles (P < .05). The decrease of these parameters in ischemic/reperfused muscle was much greater than that of myotoxic injured muscles (−12%, −11%, and −19%; P < .05). In addition, at 14 days ischemic/reperfused muscle structure was still abnormal, showing small muscle fibres expressing neonatal myosin heavy chain and large necrotic muscle fibres that were not observed in myotoxin treated muscles. By 56 days, in contrast to myotoxin treated muscles, specific maximal force and muscle weight of the ischemic/reperfused muscles did not fully recover (P < .05). This differential recovery between ischemic/reperfused and myotoxin treated muscles was not related to the differences in the initial cell death, loss of satellite cells after injury, expression of growth factors (IGF1, IGF2..), or capillary density in regenerating muscles. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that IR injury in mice induces long term detrimental effects in skeletal muscles and that the recovery following IR injury was delayed for yet unknown reasons as compared to myotoxic injury
