The design and development of aquatic exercise shoe flaps

    Get PDF
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2005.A foam structure that is attached to the bottom of a shoe worn while exercising in the water was designed, developed, and prototyped. The structure freely bends downward so as to provide little resistance when the foot is raised, but is resistant to bending upward when the foot is pressed down, thereby increasing resistance and enhancing the in-water exercise effect. The structure is called AquaFlaps. Several sketch models were made in the development of the idea leading to several foam prototypes created using the water jet. Testing of these models and prototypes yielded useful data which helped towards the final design. Testing also demonstrated that the product achieves the desired results. A provisional patent was filed.by Kyle S. McKenney.S.B

Microtubules gate tau condensation to spatially regulate microtubule functions.

Tau is an abundant microtubule-associated protein in neurons. Tau aggregation into insoluble fibrils is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia1, yet the physiological state of tau molecules within cells remains unclear. Using single-molecule imaging, we directly observe that the microtubule lattice regulates reversible tau self-association, leading to localized, dynamic condensation of tau molecules on the microtubule surface. Tau condensates form selectively permissible barriers, spatially regulating the activity of microtubule-severing enzymes and the movement of molecular motors through their boundaries. We propose that reversible self-association of tau molecules, gated by the microtubule lattice, is an important mechanism of the biological functions of tau, and that oligomerization of tau is a common property shared between the physiological and disease-associated forms of the molecule

An Evolutionary Algorithm to Generate Real Urban Traffic Flows

    Get PDF
In this article we present a strategy based on an evolutionary algorithm to calculate the real vehicle ows in cities according to data from sensors placed in the streets. We have worked with a map imported from OpenStreetMap into the SUMO traffic simulator so that the resulting scenarios can be used to perform different optimizations with the confidence of being able to work with a traffic distribution close to reality. We have compared the results of our algorithm to other competitors and achieved results that replicate the real traffic distribution with a precision higher than 90%.Universidad de Málaga. Development of Aluminum LEKIDs for Balloon-Borne Far-IR Spectroscopy

    Get PDF
We are developing lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) designed to achieve background-limited sensitivity for far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy on a stratospheric balloon. The Spectroscopic Terahertz Airborne Receiver for Far-InfraRed Exploration (STARFIRE) will study the evolution of dusty galaxies with observations of the [CII] 158 μ\mum and other atomic fine-structure transitions at z=0.5−1.5z=0.5-1.5, both through direct observations of individual luminous infrared galaxies, and in blind surveys using the technique of line intensity mapping. The spectrometer will require large format (∼\sim1800 detectors) arrays of dual-polarization sensitive detectors with NEPs of 1×10−171 \times 10^{-17} W Hz−1/2^{-1/2}. The low-volume LEKIDs are fabricated with a single layer of aluminum (20 nm thick) deposited on a crystalline silicon wafer, with resonance frequencies of 100−250100-250 MHz. The inductor is a single meander with a linewidth of 0.4 μ\mum, patterned in a grid to absorb optical power in both polarizations. The meander is coupled to a circular waveguide, fed by a conical feedhorn. Initial testing of a small array prototype has demonstrated good yield, and a median NEP of 4×10−184 \times 10^{-18} W Hz−1/2^{-1/2}.Comment: accepted for publication in Journal of Low Temperature Physic

Analyzing Math-to-Mastery through Brief Experimental Analysis

    Get PDF
The current study evaluated the effectiveness of individualized math-to-mastery (MTM) interventions, selected though brief experimental analysis (BEA), at increasing math fluency skills for 3 elementary-aged females. As MTM has only been investigated as a multicomponent intervention, the present study utilized BEA to identify those specific components which led to math skills gains in the most efficient manner possible. BEA results indicated that for 2 of 3 participants only a partial MTM intervention was necessary to prompt fluency gains, while the entire intervention was the most effective for the third. During extended analysis all 3 participants displayed math skills gains above those seen during repeated baseline assessments. Results are discussed in terms of further refining MTM through BEA procedures so as to individually target math skill deficits by considering both intervention effectiveness and efficiency
