Entropy of three-dimensional asymptotically flat cosmological solutions
The thermodynamics of three-dimensional asymptotically flat cosmological
solutions that play the same role than the BTZ black holes in the anti-de
Sitter case is derived and explained from holographic properties of flat space.
It is shown to coincide with the flat-space limit of the thermodynamics of the
inner black hole horizon on the one hand and the semi-classical approximation
to the gravitational partition function associated to the entropy of the outer
horizon on the other. This leads to the insight that it is the Massieu function

A Holder Continuous Nowhere Improvable Function with Derivative Singular Distribution
We present a class of functions in which is variant
of the Knopp class of nowhere differentiable functions. We derive estimates
which establish \mathcal{K} \sub C^{0,\al}(\R) for 0<\al<1 but no is pointwise anywhere improvable to C^{0,\be} for any \be>\al.

Recently, the author and simulteously others laid the foundations of
Vector-Valued Calculus of Variations in (Katzourakis), of
-Extremal Quasiconformal maps (Capogna and Raich, Katzourakis) and of
Optimal Lipschitz Extensions of maps (Sheffield and Smart). The "Euler-Lagrange
PDE" of Calculus of Variations in is the nonlinear nondivergence
form Aronsson PDE with as special case the -Laplacian.
Using , we construct singular solutions for these PDEs. In the
scalar case, we partially answered the open regularity problem of
Viscosity Solutions to Aronsson's PDE (Katzourakis). In the vector case, the
solutions can not be rigorously interpreted by existing PDE theories and
justify our new theory of Contact solutions for fully nonlinear systems

Witnessing the active assembly phase of massive galaxies since z = 1
We present an analysis of ~60 000 massive (stellar mass M_star > 10^{11}
M_sun) galaxies out to z = 1 drawn from 55.2 deg2 of the United Kingdom
Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) and the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) II Supernova Survey. This is by far the largest
survey of massive galaxies with robust mass estimates, based on infrared
(K-band) photometry, reaching to the Universe at about half its present age. We
find that the most massive (M_star > 10^{11.5} M_sun) galaxies have experienced
rapid growth in number since z = 1, while the number densities of the less
massive systems show rather mild evolution. Such a hierarchical trend of
evolution is consistent with the predictions of the current semi-analytic
galaxy formation model based on Lambda CDM theory. While the majority of
massive galaxies are red-sequence populations, we find that a considerable
fraction of galaxies are blue star-forming galaxies. The blue fraction is
smaller in more massive systems and decreases toward the local Universe,
leaving the red, most massive galaxies at low redshifts, which would support
the idea of active 'bottom-up' formation of these populations during 0 < z < 1.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; replaced with revised version

Towards Activity Context using Software Sensors
Service-Oriented Computing delivers the promise of configuring and
reconfiguring software systems to address user's needs in a dynamic way.
Context-aware computing promises to capture the user's needs and hence the
requirements they have on systems. The marriage of both can deliver ad-hoc
software solutions relevant to the user in the most current fashion. However,
here it is a key to gather information on the users' activity (that is what
they are doing). Traditionally any context sensing was conducted with hardware
sensors. However, software can also play the same role and in some situations
will be more useful to sense the activity of the user. Furthermore they can
make use of the fact that Service-oriented systems exchange information through
standard protocols. In this paper we discuss our proposed approach to sense the
activity of the user making use of software
Comparative RNA editing in autistic and neurotypical cerebella
Adenosine-to-inosine (A-to-I) RNA editing is a neurodevelopmentally regulated epigenetic modification shown to modulate complex behavior in animals. Little is known about human A-to-I editing, but it is thought to constitute one of many molecular mechanisms connecting environmental stimuli and behavioral outputs. Thus, comprehensive exploration of A-to-I RNA editing in human brains may shed light on gene–environment interactions underlying complex behavior in health and disease. Synaptic function is a main target of A-to-I editing, which can selectively recode key amino acids in synaptic genes, directly altering synaptic strength and duration in response to environmental signals. Here, we performed a high-resolution survey of synaptic A-to-I RNA editing in a human population, and examined how it varies in autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder in which synaptic abnormalities are a common finding. Using ultra-deep (>1000 × ) sequencing, we quantified the levels of A-to-I editing of 10 synaptic genes in postmortem cerebella from 14 neurotypical and 11 autistic individuals. A high dynamic range of editing levels was detected across individuals and editing sites, from 99.6% to below detection limits. In most sites, the extreme ends of the population editing distributions were individuals with autism. Editing was correlated with isoform usage, clusters of correlated sites were identified, and differential editing patterns examined. Finally, a dysfunctional form of the editing enzyme adenosine deaminase acting on RNA B1 was found more commonly in postmortem cerebella from individuals with autism. These results provide a population-level, high-resolution view of A-to-I RNA editing in human cerebella and suggest that A-to-I editing of synaptic genes may be informative for assessing the epigenetic risk for autism.Nancy Lurie Marks Family FoundationF.
