    Peano High Impedance Surfaces

    Get PDF
Following our previous work on metamaterial high-impedance surfaces made of Hilbert curve inclusions, here we theoretically explore the performance of the high-impedance surfaces made of another form of space-filling curve known as the Peano curve. This metamaterial surface, formed by a 2-D periodic arrangement of Peano curve inclusions, is located above a conducting ground plane and is shown to exhibit a high surface impedance surface at certain specific frequencies. Our numerical study reveals the effect of the iteration order of the Peano curve, the surface height above the conducting ground plane and the separation distance between adjacent inclusions.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Radio Scienc

Navigating the Child Support System: Lessons from the Fathers at Work Initiative

    Get PDF
Research shows that nearly half of all children born in the US today will be eligible for child support before they reach the age of 18. Many low-income, noncustodial fathers -- who often struggle to make these payments -- will seek services from workforce development organizations. Yet, understanding the child support enforcement system can be challenging -- not only for noncustodial fathers but also for the workforce organizations that want to assist them.Navigating the Child Support System aims to help meet this challenge by providing information, resources and tools to use at the intersection of workforce development and child support enforcement. The guide is based on lessons from the Fathers at Work initiative, a three-year, six-site demonstration funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, which was designed to help young, noncustodial fathers achieve increased employment and earnings, involvement in their children's lives, and more consistent financial support of their children. The guide describes child support enforcement regulations, policies and actions that can affect fathers' willingness to seek formal employment and participate in the system, and provides examples of four services that organizations might offer to benefit fathers and their families. Navigating the Child Support System offers concrete suggestions for incorporating child support services into workforce organizations' assistance to low-income, male participants, including developing partnerships with local child support enforcement agencies. It includes seven tools for learning about child support and setting goals for enhancing services to noncustodial fathers

Transactivation and Mitochondrial Activity are Affected by High Temperature in C. elegans Sperm

Sexual reproduction has a conserved flaw in that it is temperature sensitive. Exposure to high temperature leads to male infertility, but little is known about the underlying mechanism. Understanding these mechanisms is important for agriculture and reproductive medicine. Using C. elegans, we investigated two potential aspects of male fertility that may be affected by high temperature conditions: activation of sperm by seminal fluid and sperm mitochondrial activity. There are two pathways for sperm activation in C. elegans: the SPE-8 pathway in hermaphrodites and the TRY-5 pathway in male seminal fluid. Hermaphrodite sperm with a mutation in spe-8 can still be activated by TRY-5 in male seminal fluid, a process called transactivation. Preliminary data indicated that the function of the TRY-5 transactivation pathway was significantly reduced when males were exposed to high temperature. Second, we investigated if high temperature affects the abundance of sperm mitochondria. We observed a significant change in fluorescence intensity reflecting functioning mitochondria when sperm were exposed to 27°C. Our data suggest that both of our tested mechanisms may contribute to male infertility at high temperature

Perceptions of Coach’s Response to Stress on Football Player’s Quality of Experience

This research further explores the Cognitive Resource Theory (CRT; Fielder & Garcia, 1987), which is an approach to leadership in which effective leadership depends on a leader’s intelligence and experience and how these factors affect a leader’s ability to cope with stress. Extending CRT as a theoretical framework, the present research seeks to determine if players perceptions of a coach’s ability to handle stress and make good decisions has an impact on the quality of their football experience and their feelings of stress during stressful situations. It is hypothesized that players’ stress levels during rivalry games (i.e., high stress situations) will be higher for players who have absolute trust in the head coach and perceive the coach as having relatively high (vs. low) levels of stress during a game. Participants were Division III football players who first responded to questions concerning the head coach, and then questions about their personal experience on a 6-point scale

On the pharmacological action of certain organic derivatives of arsenic with special reference to salvarsan and sodium cacodylate

"Approved, Chas. W. Greene."Typescript.Illustrations and graphs pasted in.Tables folded to fit in the text block.Since the introduction of Salvarsan by Ehrlich in the latter part of 1910 many facts have been brought out concerning its reactions in the body. The most important of these pharmacologically are the deaths which have been attributed to its untoward action. The experiments in the present work were undertaken in order to determine whether such action was due to the drug injected or to other conditions accompanying the injection.Includes bibliographical references
