    A preoccupation with the idea of home was central to George Eliot\u27s fiction from its beginnings until its end. In Felix Holt and Daniel Deronda, however, this theme is developed in terms that involve legal complexities that have embroiled her characters, perplexed her readers, and sent the author to seek advice and reassurance from the barrister Frederic Harrison. Esther Lyon has a \u27right in remainder\u27! in a property, while Harold Transome has \u27a reversion tantamount to possession\u27 (p. 284), Sir Hugo Mallinger is a tenant for life, his nephew Grandcourt a tenant in tail. These intricacies of plot have puzzled and annoyed many readers and critics, including F. R. Leavis, who, with respect to Felix Holt, declared the technical elaboration \u27perversely ... misdirected\u27, demanding \u27of the reader a strenuousness of attention that, if he is an admirer of George Eliot, he is unwilling to devote\u27 .2 Assuming that Leavis did not mean to imply that nonadmirers would be prepared to devote such attention, we might still ask, what aspects of Eliot\u27s writing do not require varying degrees of strenuous attention. Is it not her ability, which no novelist of her own period equals, and few before or since come near, to hold us as readers in a high state of alert, as we follow the delicate nuances of her balanced prose and subtle reasoning and weigh the implications of her erudite allusions, that keeps discussion of her work alive? Rather than assume that, in designing these difficult plots, Eliot suffered a lapse of judgement, perhaps we should allow the possibility that she was fully in control of her art, and even accept the compliment she extends us by assuming our ability to keep our footing on some fairly steep paths. Great authors make, as well as find, their readers. Fred C. Thomson has explicated the details of the settlement with great clarity in his article \u27The Legal Plot in Felix Holt\u27.3 By the time Eliot consulted Harrison, she had written a substantial part of the novel, and had already decided on the relations between her characters with respect to property and ownership. She was justifiably worried about the law of limitations, however, which could have nullified Esther\u27s claim to Transome Court. Harrison himself could, at first, see no way around this problem, and, in order to grasp the fictional situation more fully, he became one of a very few people ever to read part of an Eliot manuscript before publication. He then came up with the idea of a settlement and base fee, which means that the Bycliffe claim to the property does not take effect as long as the settlor has living descendants

    ZmCCT and the genetic basis of day-length adaptation underlying the postdomestication spread of maize

    Teosinte, the progenitor of maize, is restricted to tropical environments in Mexico and Central America. The pre-Columbian spread of maize from its center of origin in tropical Southern Mexico to the higher latitudes of the Americas required postdomestication selection for adaptation to longer day lengths. Flowering time of teosinte and tropical maize is delayed under long day lengths, whereas temperate maize evolved a reduced sensitivity to photoperiod. We measured flowering time of the maize nested association and diverse association mapping panels in the field under both short and long day lengths, and of a maize-teosinte mapping population under long day lengths. Flowering time in maize is a complex trait affected by many genes and the environment. Photoperiod response is one component of flowering time involving a subset of flowering time genes whose effects are strongly influenced by day length. Genome-wide association and targeted high-resolution linkage mapping identified ZmCCT, a homologue of the rice photoperiod response regulator Ghd7, as the most important gene affecting photoperiod response in maize. Under long day lengths ZmCCT alleles from diverse teosintes are consistently expressed at higher levels and confer later flowering than temperate maize alleles. Many maize inbred lines, including some adapted to tropical regions, carry ZmCCT alleles with no sensitivity to day length. Indigenous farmers of the Americas were remarkably successful at selecting on genetic variation at key genes affecting the photoperiod response to create maize varieties adapted to vastly diverse environments despite the hindrance of the geographic axis of the Americas and the complex genetic control of flowering time

    The Canadian Bandaging Trial: Evidence-informed leg ulcer care and the effectiveness of two compression technologies

    Background: Objective: To determine the relative effectiveness of evidence-informed practice using two high compression systems: four-layer (4LB) and short-stretch bandaging (SSB) in community care of venous leg ulcers. Design and Setting: Pragmatic, multi-centre, parallel-group, open-label, randomized controlled trial conducted in 10 centres. Cognitively intact adults (≥18 years) referred for community care (home or clinic) with a venous ulceration measuring ≥0.7cm and present for ≥1 week, with an ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) ≥0.8, without medication-controlled Diabetes Mellitus or a previous failure to improve with either system, were eligible to participate.Methods: Consenting individuals were randomly allocated (computer-generated blocked randomization schedule) to receive either 4LB or SSB following an evidence-informed protocol. Primary endpoint: time-to- healing of the reference ulcer. Secondary outcomes: recurrence rates, health-related quality of life (HRQL), pain, and expenditures.Results: 424 individuals were randomized (4LB n = 215; SSB n = 209) and followed until their reference ulcer was healed (or maximum 30 months). An intent-to-treat analysis was conducted on all participants. Median time to ulcer healing in the 4LB group was 62 days [95% confidence interval (CI) 51 to 73], compared with 77 days (95% CI 63 to 91) in the SSB group. The unadjusted Kaplan-Meier curves revealed the difference in the distribution of cumulative healing times was not significantly different between group (log rank χ2 = 0.001, P = 0.98) nor ulcers recurrence (4LB, 10.1%; SSB, 13.3%; p = 0.345). Multivariable Cox Proportional Hazard Modeling also showed no significant between-bandage differences in healing time after controlling for significant covariates (p = 0.77). At 3-months post-baseline there were no differences in pain (no pain: 4LB, 22.7%; SSB, 26.7%; p = 0.335), or HRQL (SF-12 Mental Component Score: 4LB, 55.1; SSB, 55.8; p = 0.615; SF-12 Physical Component Score: 4LB, 39.0; SSB, 39.6; p = 0.675). The most common adverse events experienced by both groups included infection, skin breakdown and ulcer deterioration.Conclusions: The Canadian Bandaging Trial revealed that in the practice context of trained RNs using an evidence-informed protocol, the choice of bandage system (4LB and SSB) does not materially affect healing times, recurrence rates, HRQL, or pain. From a community practice perspective, this is positive news for patient-centred care allowing individual/family and practitioner choice in selecting compression technologies based on circumstances and context.Trial registration: clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT00202267
