Utilization of Peptones and Peptone Fractions by Bacteria
An attempt was made to determine the minimum concentration of the different peptones which are necessary to support the growth of a group of aerobic microorganisms. The medium for this experiment was semi-solid glucose peptone agar, with the peptone being varied in amount and kind. The growth supporting properties of the peptones under investigation varied a great deal. The minimum concentration of peptone necessary for the growth of Shigella dysenteriae, Proteus vulgaris, Streptococcus lactis, and Salmonella pullorum was determined. Peptones appear to contain a substance which is toxic to Salmonella pullorum or else they lack a growth stimulating substance necessary for the propogation of this organism. The absence of nicotinic acid from the peptones does not seem to be the factor involved. Extraction of Bacto-peptone with several organic solvents did not affect its growth supporting properties. All the peptones tested contained enough compounds possessing the guanidine nucleus to give good tests for acetyl methyl carbinol when the latter was produced by bacteria. Several peptones were found which yielded superior tests for the demonstration of indol production. The production of hydrogen sulfide in the various peptones was compared employing three different media. All the peptones under investigation produced better results when bismuth sulfite was the indicator than when ferric citrate was employed.

Near-Infrared Polarimetric Adaptive Optics Observations of NGC 1068: A torus created by a hydromagnetic outflow wind
We present J' and K' imaging linear polarimetric adaptive optics observations
of NGC 1068 using MMT-Pol on the 6.5-m MMT. These observations allow us to
study the torus from a magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) framework. In a 0.5" (30 pc)
aperture at K', we find that polarisation arising from the passage of radiation
from the inner edge of the torus through magnetically aligned dust grains in
the clumps is the dominant polarisation mechanism, with an intrinsic
polarisation of 7.0%2.2%. This result yields a torus magnetic field
strength in the range of 482 mG through paramagnetic alignment, and
139 mG through the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The measured
position angle (P.A.) of polarisation at K is found to be similar to the
P.A. of the obscuring dusty component at few parsec scales using infrared
interferometric techniques. We show that the constant component of the magnetic
field is responsible for the alignment of the dust grains, and aligned with the
torus axis onto the plane of the sky. Adopting this magnetic field
configuration and the physical conditions of the clumps in the MHD outflow wind
model, we estimate a mass outflow rate 0.17 M yr at 0.4
pc from the central engine for those clumps showing near-infrared dichroism.
The models used were able to create the torus in a timescale of 10
yr with a rotational velocity of 1228 km s at 0.4 pc. We conclude
that the evolution, morphology and kinematics of the torus in NGC 1068 can be

Liver transplantation for type IV glycogen storage disease
TYPE IV glycogen storage disease is a rare autosomal recessive disorder (also called Andersen's disease1 or amylopectinosis) in which the activity of branching enzyme alpha-1, 4-glucan: alpha-1, 4-glucan 6-glucosyltransferase is deficient in the liver as well as in cultured skin fibroblasts and other tissues.2,3 This branching enzyme is responsible for creating branch points in the normal glycogen molecule. In the relative or absolute absence of this enzyme, an insoluble and irritating form of glycogen, an amylopectin-like polysaccharide that resembles plant starch, accumulates in the cells. Planet Four: Terrains - Discovery of Araneiforms Outside of the South Polar Layered Deposits
We present the results of a systematic mapping of seasonally sculpted
terrains on the South Polar region of Mars with the Planet Four: Terrains (P4T)
online citizen science project. P4T enlists members of the general public to
visually identify features in the publicly released Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
CTX images. In particular, P4T volunteers are asked to identify: 1) araneiforms
(including features with a central pit and radiating channels known as
'spiders'); 2) erosional depressions, troughs, mesas, ridges, and
quasi-circular pits characteristic of the South Polar Residual Cap (SPRC) which
we collectively refer to as 'Swiss cheese terrain', and 3) craters. In this
work we present the distributions of our high confidence classic spider
araneiforms and Swiss cheese terrain identifications. We find no locations
within our high confidence spider sample that also have confident Swiss cheese
terrain identifications. Previously spiders were reported as being confined to
the South Polar Layered Deposits (SPLD). Our work has provided the first
identification of spiders at locations outside of the SPLD, confirmed with high
resolution HiRISE imaging. We find araneiforms on the Amazonian and Hesperian
polar units and the Early Noachian highland units, with 75% of the identified
araneiform locations in our high confidence sample residing on the SPLD. With
our current coverage, we cannot confirm whether these are the only geologic
units conducive to araneiform formation on the Martian South Polar region. Our
results are consistent with the current CO2 jet formation scenario with the
process exploiting weaknesses in the surface below the seasonal CO2 ice sheet
to carve araneiform channels into the regolith over many seasons. These new
regions serve as additional probes of the conditions required for channel

Associations of military divorce with mental, behavioral, and physical health outcomes
Background
Divorce has been linked with poor physical and mental health outcomes among civilians. Given the unique stressors experienced by U.S. service members, including lengthy and/or multiple deployments, this study aimed to examine the associations of recent divorce on health and military outcomes among a cohort of U.S. service members. Methods
Millennium Cohort participants from the first enrollment panel, married at baseline (2001–2003), and married or divorced at follow-up (2004–2006), (N = 29,314). Those divorced were compared to those who remained married for mental, behavioral, physical health, and military outcomes using logistic regression models. Results
Compared to those who remained married, recently divorced participants were significantly more likely to screen positive for new-onset posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, smoking initiation, binge drinking, alcohol-related problems, and experience moderate weight gain. However, they were also more likely be in the highest 15thpercentile of physical functioning, and be able to deploy within the subsequent 3-year period after divorce. Conclusions
Recent divorce among military members was associated with adverse mental health outcomes and risky behaviors, but was also associated with higher odds of subsequent deployment. Attention should be given to those recently divorced regarding mental health and substance abuse treatment and prevention strategies
