Evaluation of perennial cereal rye longevity and forage production when harvested at different stages of maturities and under grazing
Non-Peer ReviewedPerennial Cereal Rye (PC rye) (Secale cereale) has been promoted as a highly productive perennial forage crop for hay/silage and grazing for dryland areas. However
earlier research done at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada – Semiarid Prairie Agricultural Research Centre (AAFC-SPARC) have found that time of seeding and
defoliation on PC rye can greatly affect the number of plants surviving through the
winter. Current research at AAFC-SPARC indicated that the stage of harvest (preboot,
boot and flowering) does affect stand survival and that PC rye longevity is lower
(P<0.001) than other short lived forage species, such as, Dahurian wildrye and Slender
wheatgrass under irrigation or dryland. Grazing studies at AAFC-SPARC also observed
PC rye plant counts decline by over 48% after two years of moderate grazing at the boot to heading plant stage
Determination of forage production of spring cereals under-seeded to perennial cereal rye, winter cereals and Italian ryegrass under irrigation
Non-Peer ReviewedIn three years of irrigated trials the average biomass dry matter production was over 10 t ha1. In the first cut the spring cereals under-seeded to winter cereals produced almost three times as much biomass as the winter cereal and Italian ryegrass monocultures. In second cut, the winter cereal and Italian ryegrass monocultures produced three times more biomass than the underseeded spring cereals showing that the spring cereals caused a significant suppression of the under-seeded crops. There were no significant differences in the biomass yield of the monocultures of winter cereals, perennial cereal rye and Italian ryegrass. Winter survival data indicated that winter rye and perennial cereal rye survived well under irrigation and that winter
triticale and Italian ryegrass did not so choice of winter crop may be influenced as to whether a producer wanted to have some early spring grazing or not. Protein content of the spring cereals averaged 14% compared to over 20% in the winter cereals and Italian ryegrass
Universal features of the order-parameter fluctuations : reversible and irreversible aggregation
We discuss the universal scaling laws of order parameter fluctuations in any
system in which the second-order critical behaviour can be identified. These
scaling laws can be derived rigorously for equilibrium systems when combined
with the finite-size scaling analysis. The relation between order parameter,
criticality and scaling law of fluctuations has been established and the
connexion between the scaling function and the critical exponents has been
found. We give examples in out-of-equilibrium aggregation models such as the
Smoluchowski kinetic equations, or of at-equilibrium Ising and percolation
models.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figure
Rationale and design of the multicenter catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia before transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement in repaired tetralogy of Fallot study
Patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot are at elevated risk for ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death. Over the past decade, the pathogenesis and natural history of ventricular tachycardia has become increasingly understood, and catheter ablation has emerged as an effective treatment modality. Concurrently, there has been great progress in the development of a versatile array of transcatheter valves that can be placed in the native right ventricular outflow tract for the treatment of long-standing pulmonary regurgitation. Although such valve platforms may eliminate the need for repeat cardiac operations, they may also impede catheter access to the myocardial substrates responsible for sustained macro-reentrant ventricular tachycardia. This manuscript provides the rationale and design of a recently devised multicenter study that will examine the clinical outcomes of a uniform, preemptive strategy to eliminate ventricular tachycardia substrates before transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation in patients with tetralogy of Fallot.Cardiolog
From TgO/GABA-AT, GABA, and T-263 Mutant to Conception of Toxoplasma
Toxoplasma gondii causes morbidity, mortality, and disseminates widely via cat sexual stages. Here, we find T. gondii ornithine aminotransferase (OAT) is conserved across phyla. We solve TgO/GABA-AT structures with bound inactivators at 1.55 Å and identify an inactivator selective for TgO/GABA-AT over human OAT and GABA-AT. However, abrogating TgO/GABA-AT genetically does not diminish replication, virulence, cyst-formation, or eliminate cat's oocyst shedding. Increased sporozoite/merozoite TgO/GABA-AT expression led to our study of a mutagenized clone with oocyst formation blocked, arresting after forming male and female gametes, with “Rosetta stone”-like mutations in genes expressed in merozoites. Mutations are similar to those in organisms from plants to mammals, causing defects in conception and zygote formation, affecting merozoite capacitation, pH/ionicity/sodium-GABA concentrations, drawing attention to cyclic AMP/PKA, and genes enhancing energy or substrate formation in TgO/GABA-AT-related-pathways. These candidates potentially influence merozoite's capacity to make gametes that fuse to become zygotes, thereby contaminating environments and causing disease
Star clusters near and far; tracing star formation across cosmic time
© 2020 Springer-Verlag. The final publication is available at Springer via https://doi.org/10.1007/s11214-020-00690-x.Star clusters are fundamental units of stellar feedback and unique tracers of their host galactic properties. In this review, we will first focus on their constituents, i.e.\ detailed insight into their stellar populations and their surrounding ionised, warm, neutral, and molecular gas. We, then, move beyond the Local Group to review star cluster populations at various evolutionary stages, and in diverse galactic environmental conditions accessible in the local Universe. At high redshift, where conditions for cluster formation and evolution are more extreme, we are only able to observe the integrated light of a handful of objects that we believe will become globular clusters. We therefore discuss how numerical and analytical methods, informed by the observed properties of cluster populations in the local Universe, are used to develop sophisticated simulations potentially capable of disentangling the genetic map of galaxy formation and assembly that is carried by globular cluster populations.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
Genome-Wide Association Study in BRCA1 Mutation Carriers Identifies Novel Loci Associated with Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk
BRCA1-associated breast and ovarian cancer risks can be modified by common genetic variants. To identify further cancer risk-modifying loci, we performed a multi-stage GWAS of 11,705 BRCA1 carriers (of whom 5,920 were diagnosed with breast and 1,839 were diagnosed with ovarian cancer), with a further replication in an additional sample of 2,646 BRCA1 carriers. We identified a novel breast cancer risk modifier locus at 1q32 for BRCA1 carriers (rs2290854, P = 2.7Ă—10-8, HR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.09-1.20). In addition, we identified two novel ovarian cancer risk modifier loci: 17q21.31 (rs17631303, P = 1.4Ă—10-8, HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.17-1.38) and 4q32.3 (rs4691139, P = 3.4Ă—10-8, HR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.17-1.38). The 4q32.3 locus was not associated with ovarian cancer risk in the general population or BRCA2 carriers, suggesting a BRCA1-specific associat
Galaxy bulges and their massive black holes: a review
With references to both key and oft-forgotten pioneering works, this article
starts by presenting a review into how we came to believe in the existence of
massive black holes at the centres of galaxies. It then presents the historical
development of the near-linear (black hole)-(host spheroid) mass relation,
before explaining why this has recently been dramatically revised. Past
disagreement over the slope of the (black hole)-(velocity dispersion) relation
is also explained, and the discovery of sub-structure within the (black
hole)-(velocity dispersion) diagram is discussed. As the search for the
fundamental connection between massive black holes and their host galaxies
continues, the competing array of additional black hole mass scaling relations
for samples of predominantly inactive galaxies are presented.Comment: Invited (15 Feb. 2014) review article (submitted 16 Nov. 2014). 590
