University of Missouri-Columbia 2012."April 2012."This qualitative, multi-case study was designed to examine off-campus centers and their administrators in creating an effective learning environment for adult learners. Serving as the conceptual framework, invitational leadership theory is a holistic approach which nurtures the belief that everyone is intrinsically motivated and it is the leaders' responsibility to unleash their true potential (Purkey & Siegel, 2003). The researcher utilized invitational leadership theory as lens to analyze off-campus center administrators to understand the perceptions of faculty, students, and staff on the four characteristics: trust, respect, optimism, and intentionality within the five environments: people, places, policies, programs, and processes (Novak & Purkey, 2001). The off-campus centers analyzed were located in Midwestern States and the universities were classified as Master's Universities and Colleges by the Carnegie Foundation. The study's populations consisted of three off-campus center administrators and their supervisors, faculty, students and staff. Data was collected and triangulated through interviews, focus groups, observations and historical material (Creswell, 2003). From the research, conclusions derived from the finding indicated the off-campus center administrators' practices were consistent with invitational leadership characteristics and the educational environments were comparable to their main campus learning environments. A final conclusion emphasized the continuous need for transparency between their main campuses and the off-campus centers.Includes bibliographical reference

Internet Economics: What Happens When Constituencies Collide?

This paper describes the emerging field of Internet Economics and some of the constituencies which are shaping it. It defines the motivating factors for looking at this area, reviews some recent research results, and explores areas of overlapping interest. The paper concludes with six recommendations for further work. different academic disciplines which have done work related to Internet economics: technology, economics, and policy. Each of these areas has important contributions to make to the field but there has been little consensus across disciplines (or even within disciplines) on which direction to take. Figure 1 shows a Venn diagram which tries to characterize the constituencies' current motivation to look at Internet economics

A systematic review of asylum-seeking women's views and experiences of UK maternity care

ObjectiveTo explore and synthesise evidence of asylum-seeking women's experiences of maternity care in the UK.DesignA systematic review and thematic synthesis of peer-reviewed qualitative evidence. Relevant databases were searched from 2000 until 2018. Study quality was appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) qualitative research appraisal tool.Setting and participantsUK-based studies which describe asylum-seeking women's views and experiences of maternity care.FindingsSix studies were included for thematic synthesis. Seven common themes emerged; ‘Communication challenges’, ‘Isolation’, Mental health challenges’, ‘Professional attitudes’, Access to healthcare’, ‘Effects of dispersal’ and ‘Housing challenges’. The review indicated that pregnant asylum seekers face significant barriers to accessing maternity care due to practical issues related to the challenges of their status and lack of knowledge of maternity services, together with professional attitudes.Key conclusions and implications for practiceMandatory provision of interpreter services, together with training for health care professionals could address urgent issues faced by pregnant asylum seekers. Further research and population-specific guidelines are needed to improve care for these women

Icing flight research: Aerodynamic effects of ice and ice shape documentation with stereo photography

Aircraft icing flight research was performed in natural icing conditions. A data base consisting of icing cloud measurements, ice shapes, and aerodynamic measurements is being developed. During research icing encounters the icing cloud was continuously measured. After the encounter, the ice accretion shapes on the wing were documented with a stereo camera system. The increase in wing section drag was measured with a wake survey probe. The overall aircraft performance loss in terms of lift and drag coefficient changes was obtained by steady level speed/power measurements. Selective deicing of the airframe components was performed to determine their contributions to the total drag increase. Engine out capability in terms of power available was analyzed for the iced aircraft. It was shown that the stereo photography system can be used to document ice shapes in flight and that the wake survey probe can measure increases in wing section drag caused by ice. On one flight, the wing section drag coefficient (c sub d) increased approximately 120 percent over the uniced baseline at an aircraft angle of attack of 6 deg. On another flight, the aircraft darg coefficient (c sub d) increased by 75 percent over the uniced baseline at an aircraft lift coefficient (C sub d) of 0.5

Detection of antibody-dependent complement mediated inactivation of both autologous and heterologous virus in primary HIV-1 infection

Specific CD8 T-cell responses to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) are induced in primary infection and make an important contribution to the control of early viral replication. The importance of neutralizing antibodies in containing primary viremia is questioned because they usually arise much later. Nevertheless antienvelope antibodies develop simultaneously with, or even before, peak viremia. We determined whether such antibodies might control viremia by complement-mediated inactivation (CMI). In each of seven patients studied, antibodies capable of CMI appeared at or shortly after the peak in viremia, concomitantly with detection of virus-specific T-cell responses. The CMI was effective on both autologous and heterologous HIV-1 isolates. Activation of the classical pathway and direct viral lysis were at least partly responsible. Since immunoglobulin G (IgG)-antibodies triggered the CMI, specific memory B cells could also be induced by vaccination. Thus, consideration should be given to vaccination strategies that induce IgG antibodies capable of CMI
