    Structural changes and potential vertebrate responses following simulated partial harvesting of boreal mixedwood stands

    Partial harvesting, where different numbers and arrangements of live trees are retained in forest stands, has been proposed for maintaining late-successional structure and associated vertebrate species within managed boreal forests. Using the stand dynamics model SORTIE-ND, we examined 80-year patterns of structural change in response to different intensities (30–70% basal area removal) and spatial patterns (22–273m2 mean patch size) of harvesting. We also applied habitat models for seven late-successional vertebrates to the structural conditions present after harvesting to assess potential species responses. Partial harvesting increased understory and downed woody debris (DWD) cover and decreased overstory structure for the first 25 years after harvest, in comparison to unharvested stands, with this effect subsequently reversing as harvest-induced regeneration reached the canopy. Although harvesting enhanced long-term structural development in this regard, large trees, large snags, and largeDWDall remained below unharvested levels throughout the simulation period. Harvesting also produced transient increases in early-decayDWDand ground exposure. Most changes in structural attributes increased in proportion to harvest intensity, but structural differencesamongharvest patterns were generally small. Dispersed harvesting induced somewhat less pronounced decreases in vertical structure, and produced more post-harvest slash, than aggregated harvesting. All seven vertebrate species decreased in abundance as harvest intensity increased from 30 to 70%. In comparison to their pre-harvest abundances in old stands, vertebrates associated with DWD (redback salamander, marten, red-backed vole) showed neutral or positive responses at one or more harvest intensities, whereas those associated with large trees and snags (brown creeper, flying squirrel) consistently exhibited substantial adverse impacts

    Postoperative myocardial injury phenotypes and self-reported disability in patients undergoing noncardiac surgery:a multicentre observational study

    Background: Postoperative myocardial injury (PMI) comprises a spectrum of mechanisms resulting in troponin release. The impact of different PMI phenotypes on postoperative disability remains unknown. Methods: This was a multicentre prospective cohort study including patients aged ≄50 yr undergoing elective major noncardiac surgery. Patients were stratified in five groups based on the occurrence of PMI and clinical information on postoperative adverse events: PMI classified as myocardial infarction (MI; according to fourth definition), PMI plus adverse event other than MI, clinically silent PMI (PMI without adverse events), adverse events without PMI, and neither PMI nor an adverse event (reference). The primary endpoint was 6-month self-reported disability (assessed by WHO Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 [WHODAS]). Disability-free survival was defined as WHODAS ≀16%. Results: We included 888 patients of mean age 69 (range 53–91) yr, of which 356 (40%) were women; 151 (17%) patients experienced PMI, and 625 (71%) experienced 6-month disability-free survival. Patients with PMI, regardless of its phenotype, had higher preoperative disability scores than patients without PMI (difference in WHODAS; ÎČ: 3.3, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.5–6.2), but scores remained stable after surgery (ÎČ: 1.2, 95% CI: –3.2–5.6). Before surgery, patients with MI (n=36, 4%) were more disabled compared with patients without PMI and no adverse events (ÎČ: 5.5, 95% CI: 0.3–10.8). At 6 months, patients with MI and patients without PMI but with adverse events worsened in disability score (ÎČ: 11.2, 95% CI: 2.3–20.2; ÎČ: 8.1, 95% CI: 3.0–13.2, respectively). Patients with clinically silent PMI did not change in disability score at 6 months (ÎČ: 1.39, 95% CI: –4.50–7.29, P=0.642).Conclusions: Although patients with postoperative myocardial injury had higher preoperative self-reported disability, disability scores did not change at 6 months after surgery. However, patients experiencing myocardial infarction worsened in disability score after surgery.</p

    For most theologians, theology should ultimately be used by the laity and/or the public. However, the religion and science debate has not focused on the divide between theologians and the laity. In this case study I examine the debate among theologians about human enhancement. I focus on the extent to which the structure of the debate in a “mediating organization” between the theologians and the public coincides with the structure of the debate among the theologians. I conduct a survey of participants in the organization, and find that the basic divides among the theologians are largely replicated. These results, when combined with studies of the theologians themselves and the laity, provide a more holistic understanding of the future debate about human enhancement

    Corporate Board Interlocks and New Product Introductions

    Firms’ boards of directors affect many strategic outcomes. Yet the impact of boards on new products, a key organizational adaptation mechanism, has been overlooked. Addressing this gap, the authors consider the effect of the firm's board interlock centrality, the extent to which board members are connected to boards of other firms, on its new product introductions. They propose that board interlock centrality provides firms access to market intelligence, creating opportunities to introduce incremental new products. Applying the motivation-opportunity-ability theory, the authors propose that two aspects of board leadership moderate this relationship: internal (vs. external) leadership and marketing leadership. They test the hypotheses using a panel of publicly listed U.S. consumer packaged goods firms, in which most new products are incremental innovations. As hypothesized, board interlock centrality increases new product introductions. This effect is stronger when firms have high internal leadership, internal marketing leadership, and a marketing CEO; it is weaker with high intra-industry external leadership. The findings highlight the unexpected role of board interlocks on innovation outcomes and advance the literature on marketing leadership, board interlocks, and social networks

    Association of the ADAM33 gene with asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness

    Asthma is a common respiratory disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. Although environmental factors such as allergen exposure are risk factors in the development of asthma, both twin and family studies point to a strong genetic component. To date, linkage studies have identified more than a dozen genomic regions linked to asthma. In this study, we performed a genome-wide scan on 460 Caucasian families and identified a locus on chromosome 20p13 that was linked to asthma (log10 of the likelihood ratio (LOD), 2.94) and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (LOD, 3.93). A survey of 135 polymorphisms in 23 genes identified the ADAM33 gene as being significantly associated with asthma using case-control, transmission disequilibrium and haplotype analyses (P = 0.04?0.000003). ADAM proteins are membrane-anchored metalloproteases with diverse functions, which include the shedding of cell-surface proteins such as cytokines and cytokine receptors. The identification and characterization of ADAM33, a putative asthma susceptibility gene identified by positional cloning in an outbred population, should provide insights into the pathogenesis and natural history of this common disease
