This white paper describes the astrobiological significance of the Enceladus plume, and makes a series of scientific and technological recommendations that would lead to a future mission that samples and analyzes plume materials, and searches for evidence of life

    Charges of Exceptionally Twisted Branes

The charges of the exceptionally twisted (D4 with triality and E6 with charge conjugation) D-branes of WZW models are determined from the microscopic/CFT point of view. The branes are labeled by twisted representations of the affine algebra, and their charge is determined to be the ground state multiplicity of the twisted representation. It is explicitly shown using Lie theory that the charge groups of these twisted branes are the same as those of the untwisted ones, confirming the macroscopic K-theoretic calculation. A key ingredient in our proof is that, surprisingly, the G2 and F4 Weyl dimensions see the simple currents of A2 and D4, respectively.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, LaTex2e, complete proofs of all statements, updated bibliograph

Cholesterol-Rich Membrane Microdomains Mediate Cell Cycle Arrest Induced by Actinobacillus Actinomycetemcomitans Cytolethal-Distending Toxin

We have previously shown that Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans cytolethal-distending toxin (Cdt) is a potent immunosuppressive agent that induces G2/M arrest in human lymphocytes. In this study, we explored the possibility that Cdt-mediated immunotoxicity involves lipid membrane microdomains. We first determined that following treatment of Jurkat cells with Cdt holotoxin all three Cdt subunits localize to these microdomains. Laser confocal microscopy was employed to colocalize the subunits with GM1-enriched membrane regions which are characteristic of membrane rafts. Western blot analysis of isolated lipid rafts also demonstrated the presence of Cdt peptides. Cholesterol depletion, using methyl β-cyclodextrin, protected cells from the ability of the Cdt holotoxin to induce G2 arrest. Moreover, cholesterol depletion reduced the ability of the toxin to associate with Jurkat cells. Thus, lipid raft integrity is vital to the action of Cdt on host cells. The implications of our observations with respect to Cdt mode of action are discussed. © 2005 The Authors; Journal compilation © 2005 Blackwell Publishing Ltd

    RICIS research

The principle focus of one of the RICIS (Research Institute for Computing and Information Systems) components is computer systems and software engineering in-the-large of the lifecycle of large, complex, distributed systems which: (1) evolve incrementally over a long time; (2) contain non-stop components; and (3) must simultaneously satisfy a prioritized balance of mission and safety critical requirements at run time. This focus is extremely important because of the contribution of the scaling direction problem to the current software crisis. The Computer Systems and Software Engineering (CSSE) component addresses the lifestyle issues of three environments: host, integration, and target

APS Neutrino Study: Report of the Neutrino Astrophysics and Cosmology Working Group

In 2002, Ray Davis and Masatoshi Koshiba were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics ``for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, in particular for the detection of cosmic neutrinos.'' However, while astronomy has undergone a revolution in understanding by synthesizing data taken at many wavelengths, the universe has only barely been glimpsed in neutrinos, just the Sun and the nearby SN 1987A. An entire universe awaits, and since neutrinos can probe astrophysical objects at densities, energies, and distances that are otherwise inaccessible, the results are expected to be particularly exciting. Similarly, the revolution in quantitative cosmology has heightened the need for very precise tests that depend on the effects of neutrinos, and prominent among them is the search for the effects of neutrino mass, since neutrinos are a small but known component of the dark matter. In this report, we highlight some of the key opportunties for progress in neutrino astrophysics and cosmology, and the implications for other areas of physics

    Boundary states for WZW models

    Get PDF
The boundary states for a certain class of WZW models are determined. The models include all modular invariants that are associated to a symmetry of the unextended Dynkin diagram. Explicit formulae for the boundary state coefficients are given in each case, and a number of properties of the corresponding NIM-reps are derived.Comment: 34 pages, harvmac (b), 4 eps-figures. Outstanding Business Reference Sources: The 2010 Selection of Recent Titles

    Get PDF
Each year at the ALA Annual Conference, the Business Reference Sources Committee of RUSA’s Business Reference and Services Section (BRASS) meets to select the outstanding business reference sources published since May of the previous year. With all due respect to the familiar and longstanding column title, committee members have come to think of our charge more broadly as finding the most outstanding business information sources, the better to reflect the evolving nature of the formats and means of accessing business information to meet reference needs. For 2010, the committee weeded titles proposed during 2009–10 down to fifteen that made the final review. Among those, the committee selected three as outstanding business information titles and an additional six as noteworthy titles. The works reviewed below cover such areas as economics, the music industry, corporate sustainability, retailing, brand valuation, the current and historical U.S. role in international trade, and an innovative new vehicle for affordable (or free) online access to premier instructional resources in business and economics

Blazing Trails Through an Untamed Wilderness: Improving Your Library's Self-Guided Help

    Get PDF
Libraries provide self-guided help on their websites through FAQs, guides, and tutorials. This content, often created to meet immediate needs and located on multiple webpages, can become an untamed wilderness over time. A group of librarians at the University of Alaska Anchorage took a holistic approach to reflect on, re-envision, and renew our library’s online self-guided help in order to provide students with a more navigable path to research success. This group includes an instructional design librarian and four subject specialist librarians who have responsibility for a significant amount of library instruction, LibGuides, and other tutorials. When we realized the scope of the changes and the extent of the content we needed to edit and create, the project felt overwhelming, but by sharing our experience, we hope to empower others to blaze a trail to improve their own self-guided help. This paper will describe our project and process, lessons learned, and resulting impacts
