The Medical College of Virginia (MCV) grew in size and reputation in the latter half of the twentieth century, amid a time of technological advancements in the medical field and the rise of teaching hospitals. Starting with the opening of the College Infirmary in 1861, this book follows the history of MCV’s hospitals. Also discussed is MCV’s role during the Civil War, contributions to the college, and William T. Sanger’s influence on the school’s growth. The book includes photos of the buildings and a timeline of the hospitals.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/vcu_books/1015/thumbnail.jp

Angular distribution in two-photon double ionization of helium by intense attosecond soft X-ray pulses

We investigate two-photon double ionization of helium by intense (1015W/cm210^{15} W/cm^2) ultrashort (300\approx 300 as) soft X-ray pulses (E = 91.6 eV). The time-dependent two-electron Schr\"odinger equation is solved using a coupled channel method. We show that for ultrashort pulses the angular distribution of ejected electrons depends on the pulse duration and provides novel insights into the role of electron correlations in the two-electron photoemission process. The angular distribution at energies near the ``independent electron'' peaks is close to dipolar while it acquires in the ``valley'' of correlated emission a significant quadrupolar component within a few hundred attoseconds.Comment: 17 pages, 6 fig

Differential cross-section for positronium formation in electron-atomic hydrogen collisions

    Get PDF
The L=0 and 1 partial wave amplitudes obtained by a two-state coupled static approximation with correlation with the L greater than or equal to 2 Born amplitudes were combined to obtain the differential cross section for positronium formation in electron-atomic hydrogen collisions. For positron energies of 0.64 and 0.75 ryd, minima at the scattering angles of 57 deg and 51 deg are found. Total cross sections for positronium formation for low and intermediate impact energies are given. Measurement of the differential cross section for the process positron + helium yields positronium + helium ion for the detection of possible minima is suggested

Indonesian Law Reform and the Promotion of Justice: an Analysis of Law Reform in the Post-soeharto Period

This paper focused on law reform in Indonesia post-Soeharto period. It analyses whether the promotion of justice has been conducted. It aims to analyse whether the law reform during the reign of B.J. Habibie impeded on the promotion of justice. This paper takes the position that the promotion of justice was absent during Soeharto's presidency, and through an analysis of five law reforms introduced after his downfall - No. 2 of 1999 on Political Parties, No. 3 of 1999 on General Elections, No. 28 of 1999 on Corruption, Collusion and Nepotism, No. 31 of 1999 on the Eradication of Corruption and No. 39 of 1999 on Human Rights. It is argued that that the laws introduced during the Post-Soeharto era did not see to the complete promotion of justice

Setting things rigth : the massacre in the Sierra Mazatán and indigeous archaeology Sonora, México

In June 1902, Mexican troops attacked the camp of women and children and killed 124 Yaqui. Three weeks later, the North American physical anthropologist Aleš Hrdlička collected the skulls of 10 individuals, human bone, hats, blankets, weapons, and a cradleboard from the battlefield. He shipped these materials to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The bi-national Proyecto Cerro Mazatán project worked collaboratively with the Yaqui tribes of Sonora and Arizona to repatriate the human remains and other materials than Hrdlička took from the battlefield. The collaboration was a success and in the fall of 2009 the National Museum of Natural History returned the remains to the Yaqui people. This project is a valuable example of how indigenous Archaeology can set things right and atone for archaeology’s past transgressions.Fil: McGuire, Randall H.
